Dr. Todd S. Hewell - Plastic Surgeon in St. Charles, IL

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Todd S. Hewell earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, a distinguished institution known for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on research-driven clinical practice. During his medical school tenure, he distinguished himself academically, securing research grants focused on wound healing and tissue regeneration, and publishing peer‑reviewed articles that explored the molecular pathways influencing scar formation. His commitment to academic excellence was complemented by early clinical exposure, where he rotated through diverse surgical specialties, solidifying his resolve to pursue a career in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Following medical school, Dr. Hewell entered a highly competitive residency program in general surgery, where he refined his operative skills and deepened his understanding of peri‑operative management. His residency experience was marked by a relentless pursuit of technical mastery, as he assisted in complex abdominal reconstructions, vascular repairs, and trauma cases that demanded both precision and swift decision‑making. Mentored by seasoned surgeons, he cultivated a disciplined operative technique that emphasized meticulous tissue handling, hemostasis, and the preservation of vascular integrity—principles that would later become hallmarks of his aesthetic practice.

After completing his general surgery residency, Dr. Hewell pursued a dedicated plastic surgery fellowship, a rigorous three‑year training that combined reconstructive and aesthetic disciplines. Within this fellowship, he honed his expertise in facial aesthetic surgery, mastering the delicate balance required for rhinoplasty, forehead lifts, and facial contouring procedures. He also completed specialized rotations in craniofacial surgery, hand reconstruction, and microsurgical free‑tissue transfer, ensuring a comprehensive skill set that spans the full spectrum of plastic surgery. Throughout his fellowship, Dr. Hewell was recognized for his operative dexterity, earning the “Outstanding Resident Surgeon” award for two consecutive years and contributing to innovative research on 3‑D printing of custom facial implants.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Hewell’s surgical repertoire is anchored in a profound mastery of plastic surgery, with a particular emphasis on facial aesthetic procedures that blend form and function. His practice is distinguished by a focus on rhinoplasty, a complex operation that demands an intricate understanding of nasal anatomy, airway physiology, and aesthetic proportion. Whether performing a subtle refinement to harmonize a patient’s facial features or a comprehensive reconstructive rhinoplasty following trauma, Dr. Hewell applies a meticulous, step‑by‑step approach that prioritizes both aesthetic outcome and respiratory function. His technique incorporates preservation rhinoplasty principles, minimizing cartilage disruption to preserve natural tissue integrity while achieving the desired contour.

Beyond rhinoplasty, Dr. Hewell excels in a broad spectrum of facial aesthetic surgeries, including facelifts, brow lifts, eyelid (blepharoplasty) procedures, and facial fat grafting. He employs a refined, layered approach to facelifts that respects the underlying facial musculature and ligamentous structures, resulting in natural‑looking rejuvenation with minimal tension and reduced risk of postoperative scarring. In eyelid surgeries, his precision in addressing both functional vision impairment and cosmetic concerns has garnered referrals from ophthalmologists and optometrists alike. His expertise in facial fat grafting utilizes autologous adipose tissue harvested via low‑trauma liposuction, allowing for volumetric restoration that integrates seamlessly with the patient’s own tissue, thereby enhancing long‑term durability and aesthetic harmony.

Dr. Hewell’s commitment to innovation is evident in his adoption of emerging technologies such as high‑resolution three‑dimensional imaging, computer‑assisted surgical planning, and minimally invasive endoscopic techniques. By integrating these tools into his operative workflow, he achieves unparalleled accuracy in pre‑operative analysis and intra‑operative execution. For instance, his use of intra‑operative navigation systems during complex rhinoplasty procedures enables real‑time visualization of bony and cartilaginous structures, reducing the likelihood of inadvertent injury and enhancing surgical confidence. This blend of technical virtuosity and artistic sensibility positions Dr. Hewell as a leader in the field of facial aesthetic surgery, offering patients outcomes that are both aesthetically refined and functionally sound.

He is a proud member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), where he regularly participates in continuing education courses that address the latest advancements in surgical safety protocols, infection control, and postoperative care. Through ASPS, Dr. Hewell contributes to the development of consensus guidelines that shape national policies on patient safety, ensuring that his practice remains aligned with the most rigorous evidence‑based standards.

In addition to his ASPS affiliation, Dr. Hewell holds membership in the American Rhinoplasty Society, an organization dedicated to the refinement of nasal surgery techniques and the promotion of safety in rhinoplasty. Within this society, he has presented case studies on complication mitigation, focusing on strategies to preserve nasal airflow and reduce postoperative edema. His involvement in the American Board of Plastic Surgery further underscores his dedication to maintaining board‑certified competency, as he undergoes periodic re‑certification examinations that assess both his clinical knowledge and surgical proficiency. These credentials collectively affirm his unwavering commitment to delivering care that adheres to the highest safety benchmarks.

This prestigious accolade acknowledges his consistent delivery of complication‑free outcomes, meticulous pre‑operative planning, and his transparent communication style that empowers patients throughout their surgical journey.
