Meet Shawn Matian: Philosophy and Approach
Dr. Shawn Matian’s philosophy is anchored in the belief that true aesthetic transformation begins with a deep respect for the individuality of each patient. He views the facial and dental complex as a harmonious ecosystem, where the subtleties of bone, soft tissue, and smile converge to create an expression of personal identity. In his practice, Dr. Matian blends the precision of surgical science with an artist’s eye for proportion, striving to enhance natural beauty rather than impose a one‑size‑fits‑all aesthetic. This patient‑centered approach is reinforced by a rigorous intake process that includes comprehensive facial analysis, digital imaging, and a candid dialogue about expectations, lifestyle, and long‑term goals. By integrating these elements, he ensures that every intervention—whether a minimally invasive dermal filler or a full facial rejuvenation—aligns with the patient’s intrinsic features and aspirations.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Matian is a vocal advocate for the concept of “holistic aesthetics,” a framework that acknowledges the interdependence of oral health, facial structure, and overall well‑being. He contends that a smile is not an isolated entity; it is intimately linked to jaw alignment, nasal symmetry, and even cervical posture. This perspective drives him to collaborate closely with orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons, and dermatologists, fostering a multidisciplinary environment where each specialist contributes to a unified vision of health and beauty. His dedication to continuous learning keeps him at the forefront of emerging technologies, such as 3‑dimensional printing for surgical planning and bio‑compatible materials that mimic natural tissue characteristics.
Dr. Matian’s approach also emphasizes transparency and education. He believes that an empowered patient is a satisfied patient, and therefore he devotes significant time to explaining the science behind each procedure, the realistic outcomes, and the potential risks involved. He utilizes state‑of‑the‑art visualization tools that allow patients to see simulated results before any incision is made, fostering trust and reducing anxiety. This commitment to informed consent, coupled with a compassionate bedside manner, has earned him a reputation for delivering not only exceptional aesthetic results but also a reassuring, supportive experience that resonates long after the final suture is removed.

Rigorous Medical Education and Training
Dr. Matian’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he graduated with honors and distinguished himself in molecular genetics research. The rigorous curriculum at UCLA provided him with a solid foundation in the biological sciences, fostering an analytical mindset that would later prove invaluable in his surgical career. During his undergraduate years, he was actively involved in research projects that explored tissue regeneration and the cellular mechanisms of wound healing, experiences that sparked his fascination with the transformative potential of surgical intervention.
Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Matian pursued a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree at The Ostrow School of Dentistry, University of Pacific. The program’s emphasis on both clinical excellence and innovative research equipped him with a comprehensive skill set that bridges restorative dentistry and advanced surgical techniques. While at Ostrow, he completed a series of intensive clinical rotations that exposed him to complex maxillofacial procedures, implantology, and aesthetic dentistry, allowing him to refine his hand‑eye coordination and develop a meticulous attention to detail. His academic excellence was recognized through multiple Dean’s List honors and a prestigious research award for his thesis on biomimetic restorative materials.
After obtaining his DDS, Dr. Matian embarked on a series of post‑doctoral fellowships that expanded his expertise beyond traditional dentistry into the realm of facial plastic surgery. He completed a fellowship in Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry, where he mastered the art of smile design, digital smile simulation, and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures. Additionally, he pursued specialized training in holistic and biomimetic dentistry, focusing on metal‑free restorative techniques that prioritize biocompatibility and long‑term tissue health. These combined educational experiences have forged a unique practitioner who seamlessly integrates dental science with facial aesthetic surgery, positioning him as a leader in the interdisciplinary field of facial rejuvenation.
Surgical Expertise
Dr. Matian’s surgical repertoire is distinguished by a commitment to holistic, biomimetic, and metal‑free dentistry, each of which reflects his dedication to patient safety and aesthetic harmony. In holistic dentistry, he adopts a patient‑first philosophy that considers the systemic impacts of dental materials and procedures, ensuring that every treatment aligns with the body’s natural processes. His biomimetic approach utilizes cutting‑edge, tooth‑colored composites and ceramics that replicate the natural translucency and strength of enamel, allowing for restorations that are both functionally durable and visually indistinguishable from native tooth structure. By eliminating metallic alloys, Dr. Matian minimizes the risk of galvanic reactions and allergic responses, delivering metal‑free solutions that enhance both comfort and longevity.
Beyond restorative work, Dr. Matian is renowned for his expertise in cosmetic dentistry, a discipline that merges artistic vision with scientific precision. He employs state‑of‑the‑art digital smile design software to craft individualized treatment plans that address color, shape, alignment, and gingival aesthetics. Whether performing porcelain veneer placements, full‑mouth reconstructions, or subtle enamel micro‑abrasion, he meticulously balances form and function to achieve results that appear effortless yet are technically sophisticated. His general dentistry practice remains a cornerstone of his clinical activity, providing a foundation of preventive care, periodontal maintenance, and restorative interventions that ensure the overall health of the oral environment.
Dr. Matian’s surgical skill set extends to facial aesthetic procedures that complement his dental expertise. He is proficient in minimally invasive facial rejuvenation techniques, including injectable neuromodulators, dermal fillers, and thread lifts, which he employs to harmonize facial contours and enhance the natural smile line. His deep understanding of facial anatomy, honed through extensive cadaveric dissection and advanced imaging studies, allows him to perform precise soft‑tissue manipulations that yield subtle, lasting improvements. This integration of dental and facial surgery enables Dr. Matian to address complex aesthetic concerns holistically, delivering comprehensive transformations that reflect the patient’s unique identity.
