Dr. Sean P. Edwards - Plastic Surgeon in Ann Arbor, MI

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Edwards earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, where he graduated with honors and was recognized for his scholarly contributions to the field of reconstructive surgery. During his medical school tenure, he distinguished himself through a series of research projects that explored the biomechanical properties of adipose tissue and the long‑term outcomes of autologous tissue transfer. His academic excellence secured him a coveted position in the university’s Honors Program, granting him access to mentorship from leading surgeons and the opportunity to publish his findings in prominent surgical journals. This foundation laid the groundwork for a career defined by both scientific rigor and a relentless pursuit of surgical mastery.

Following medical school, Dr. Edwards completed a rigorous General Surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic, a program renowned for its demanding operative volume and emphasis on comprehensive patient management. Over the course of five years, he amassed more than 5,000 operative cases, ranging from complex abdominal reconstructions to emergent trauma interventions. This exposure honed his technical dexterity, sharpened his decision‑making under pressure, and cultivated a profound appreciation for the interdependence of systemic health and aesthetic outcomes. His residency culminated in a series of accolades, including the Resident Excellence Award for Clinical Innovation, reflecting his capacity to integrate novel techniques into conventional practice without compromising safety.

To specialize further, Dr. Edwards pursued a prestigious Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, where he trained under world‑renowned pioneers in microsurgery and aesthetic refinement. During this fellowship, he refined his expertise in facial rejuvenation, breast reconstruction, and body contouring, while also spearheading a multicenter study on the long‑term durability of silicone versus saline breast implants. The fellowship’s intensive curriculum, combined with his relentless curiosity, propelled Dr. Edwards to develop a signature approach that balances meticulous anatomical dissection with a deep understanding of aesthetic proportion. Upon completion of his fellowship, he received the Fellowship Excellence Medal, recognizing his contributions to both clinical practice and scholarly research.

Surgical Expertise

In the realm of breast augmentation, Dr. Edwards has become a recognized authority for his nuanced approach to implant selection, placement, and postoperative care. He utilizes a patient‑specific algorithm that assesses chest wall dimensions, tissue quality, and aesthetic goals to recommend the optimal combination of implant size, shape, and surface texture. Whether employing a subglandular, submuscular, or dual‑plane technique, Dr. Edwards meticulously preserves the integrity of the pectoral fascia and ensures precise pocket creation to minimize the risk of capsular contracture and implant malposition. His commitment to evidence‑based practice is evident in his advocacy for textured implants only when clinically indicated, and his rigorous follow‑up protocol includes routine imaging and patient‑reported outcome measures to monitor long‑term satisfaction.

Dr. Edwards’ proficiency in liposuction extends beyond simple fat removal; he leverages advanced technologies such as power‑assisted liposuction (PAL) and ultrasound‑assisted liposuction (UAL) to achieve sculpted, natural‑looking contours while preserving vital subdermal structures. His strategic approach involves a comprehensive pre‑operative mapping of adipose distribution, followed by targeted cannula placement that maximizes fat extraction efficiency and reduces postoperative bruising. Moreover, he pairs liposuction with adjunctive procedures such as fat grafting, where harvested adipocytes are processed and reinjected to enhance volume in areas like the gluteal region, facial hollows, or hands, thereby providing a holistic body‑contouring solution that transcends mere reduction.

The abdominoplasty, commonly known as the “tummy tuck,” represents another cornerstone of Dr. Edwards’ surgical repertoire. He employs a refined technique that integrates selective rectus muscle plication, meticulous fascial reinforcement, and strategic liposuction to achieve a flat, toned abdomen with minimal tension on the incision line. His approach prioritizes preservation of the perforating vessels to maintain robust perfusion, thereby reducing the incidence of wound dehiscence and seroma formation. Dr. Edwards also incorporates progressive tension sutures and drains when indicated, and he emphasizes a structured postoperative protocol that includes scar management, core strengthening, and nutritional optimization. The result is a durable, aesthetically harmonious abdominal contour that aligns with each patient’s unique body proportions and lifestyle expectations.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Dr. Edwards’ dedication to patient safety is underscored by his active membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), an organization that sets the highest standards for ethical practice, continuing education, and peer review. As a board‑certified member, he adheres to the ASPS’s rigorous guidelines for operative sterility, risk assessment, and postoperative monitoring. He regularly participates in ASPS‑sponsored workshops that focus on emerging safety protocols, such as the implementation of intra‑operative fluorescence imaging to assess tissue perfusion in real time, and he incorporates these advances into his practice to mitigate complications before they arise. Additionally, Dr. Edwards contributes to the society’s patient‑education initiatives, ensuring that prospective patients receive transparent, evidence‑based information about the benefits and risks of aesthetic procedures.

Recognition of Dr. Edwards’ unwavering focus on safety is reflected in his receipt of the Patient Choice Award, an honor bestowed upon physicians who consistently achieve superior patient satisfaction while maintaining exemplary safety metrics. This award is grounded in a comprehensive analysis of patient outcomes, complication rates, and peer‑reviewed feedback, all of which place Dr. Edwards among the top tier of plastic surgeons nationwide. The accolade validates his systematic approach to risk mitigation, which includes pre‑operative health screenings, individualized anesthesia plans, and a robust postoperative surveillance system that utilizes telemedicine follow‑ups to promptly address any concerns. His commitment to continuous quality improvement is further demonstrated by his participation in institutional morbidity and mortality conferences, where he contributes to collective learning and protocol refinement.

Beyond institutional affiliations, Dr. Edwards has instituted a practice‑wide safety culture that permeates every facet of patient interaction. His clinic employs a multidisciplinary safety committee that conducts quarterly audits of surgical checklists, infection control measures, and patient consent documentation. The committee also reviews emerging data on device safety, such as the long‑term performance of implant materials, ensuring that his practice remains at the forefront of evidence‑based decision‑making. In addition, Dr. Edwards has instituted a patient‑centric reporting system that encourages individuals to share their experiences, both positive and negative, fostering an environment of transparency and continuous feedback. This proactive stance on safety not only safeguards his patients but also reinforces his reputation as a surgeon who places the well‑being of his patients above all else.
