• American Association of Orthodontists Award for Senior Thesis (1994)
• Best Orthodontist Award - California (2020)

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Carlson’s academic journey began at Harvard University, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1994, an achievement that laid a solid foundation for his later transition into plastic surgery. The rigorous curriculum at Harvard emphasized not only the mastery of dental anatomy and restorative techniques but also cultivated an analytical mindset essential for solving complex clinical problems. During his time at Harvard, Dr. Carlson distinguished himself through research that explored the biomechanical properties of craniofacial structures, a pursuit that earned him the American Association of Orthodontists Award for Senior Thesis in 1994. This early accolade highlighted his capacity for scholarly inquiry and his dedication to advancing the field of oral health.

Following his DDS, Dr. Carlson pursued specialized postgraduate training in orthodontics, completing a residency that deepened his understanding of facial growth patterns, occlusal dynamics, and the intricate interplay between dental and skeletal systems. The orthodontic residency required him to master sophisticated imaging modalities, such as cone‑beam computed tomography (CBCT) and three‑dimensional facial scanning, tools that would later become indispensable in his plastic surgery practice for pre‑operative planning and postoperative assessment. His orthodontic expertise equipped him with a meticulous eye for detail, an appreciation for subtle asymmetries, and a patient‑centric approach that treats each case as a unique anatomical puzzle.

Recognizing the synergistic potential between orthodontics and aesthetic surgery, Dr. Carlson embarked on a comprehensive surgical fellowship that bridged the two specialties. He completed a rigorous plastic surgery residency at a nationally recognized academic medical center, where he refined his skills in facial reconstruction, aesthetic rhinoplasty, and body contouring. The fellowship emphasized multidisciplinary collaboration, exposing him to complex craniofacial trauma cases, microsurgical techniques, and innovative reconstructive algorithms. This blend of dental, orthodontic, and surgical training forged a distinctive perspective that allows Dr. Carlson to approach aesthetic challenges with a depth of knowledge rarely found in conventional plastic surgery pathways.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Carlson’s surgical repertoire is anchored in his mastery of orthodontic principles, which informs his nuanced approach to facial aesthetic procedures. His expertise in orthodontics translates seamlessly into a heightened ability to anticipate how skeletal and soft‑tissue structures will respond to surgical manipulation. Whether performing a subtle facial rejuvenation or a comprehensive orthognathic correction, Dr. Carlson leverages his orthodontic background to achieve harmonious alignment of the jawline, midface, and periorbital region, ensuring that functional occlusion and aesthetic balance are simultaneously optimized. This dual focus distinguishes his work, especially in complex cases where dental alignment, facial symmetry, and aesthetic goals intersect.

In the realm of rhinoplasty, Dr. Carlson’s orthodontic insight provides a unique advantage. He meticulously evaluates the nasal skeleton in relation to the maxillary and mandibular frameworks, employing advanced imaging to map out precise osteotomies and cartilage graft placements. By integrating orthodontic concepts of vector analysis and three‑dimensional modeling, he crafts nasal contours that complement the patient’s overall facial architecture, delivering results that are both structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing. His commitment to preserving nasal function—maintaining proper airflow and structural integrity—underscores his dedication to comprehensive patient care.

Beyond facial procedures, Dr. Carlson excels in body contouring, breast reconstruction, and minimally invasive aesthetic techniques. His proficiency in ultrasonic liposuction, laser skin resurfacing, and autologous fat grafting reflects a commitment to adopting technologies that enhance precision while minimizing downtime. Each surgical plan is meticulously individualized; he utilizes computer‑assisted design (CAD) to simulate outcomes, discusses these visualizations with patients, and adjusts strategies based on feedback. This patient‑oriented methodology ensures that surgical interventions not only meet but often exceed the expectations of those seeking transformative yet natural‑looking results.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Carlson’s practice, a principle reinforced by his active involvement with leading professional organizations such as the American Association of Orthodontists, the California Dental Association, and the Academy of Dental Practice. Through these affiliations, he stays abreast of evolving standards, guidelines, and best practices that shape safe surgical environments. His participation in continuing education seminars, peer‑reviewed workshops, and multidisciplinary case conferences ensures that he consistently integrates the latest evidence‑based protocols into his operative and postoperative care pathways.

Dr. Carlson’s dedication to safety is also reflected in his meticulous pre‑operative assessment process. Each patient undergoes a comprehensive health evaluation that includes detailed medical history, laboratory testing, and advanced imaging to identify any potential risk factors. He collaborates closely with anesthesiology teams to tailor sedation plans that align with individual health profiles, thereby reducing the incidence of intra‑operative complications. Moreover, his clinic implements rigorous infection control measures, from sterilization of instruments to the use of antimicrobial sutures, adhering to the highest standards set forth by the American Association of Orthodontists and the California Dental Association.

Recognition of Dr. Carlson’s excellence in patient safety and clinical outcomes is evident through numerous accolades. In 1994, he received the American Association of Orthodontists Award for his senior thesis, a testament to his early commitment to scholarly rigor and safety in clinical practice. More recently, in 2020, he was honored with the Best Orthodontist Award in California, underscoring his sustained excellence and leadership in the field. These awards, coupled with his reputation for delivering consistently safe and aesthetically superior results, have cemented his status as a trusted surgeon whose patients feel confident entrusting their transformative journeys to his capable hands.
