His dedication to scholarly inquiry was recognized with multiple honors, including the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Clinical Performance and a fellowship in the UNC Center for Aesthetic Medicine. These formative experiences solidified his commitment to blending scientific inquiry with surgical artistry.

Following medical school, Dr. Hargrove pursued a comprehensive residency in ophthalmic surgery, where he honed his expertise in both ocular and peri‑ocular procedures. This residency, conducted at a premier academic medical center, offered exposure to a broad spectrum of cases ranging from complex cataract extractions to intricate oculofacial reconstructions after traumatic injury. Throughout his training, he cultivated a reputation for meticulous technique, steady hands, and an innate ability to anticipate anatomical challenges. He completed a dedicated fellowship in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, where he refined his skill set under the mentorship of world‑leading surgeons who emphasized the delicate balance between functional restoration and aesthetic refinement.

In addition to his formal training, Dr. Hargrove has pursued numerous advanced courses and certifications that augment his surgical repertoire. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and holds a subspecialty certification in oculoplastic surgery, reflecting his mastery of the intricate structures surrounding the eye. His commitment to lifelong learning is further evidenced by his participation in international surgical symposia, where he has both presented his own research and absorbed pioneering techniques from global leaders. This combination of rigorous education, specialized fellowship, and continuous professional development equips Dr. Hargrove with a uniquely comprehensive perspective that bridges the disciplines of plastic surgery and ophthalmology.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Hargrove’s surgical portfolio is anchored in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, a niche that demands both aesthetic sensibility and precise functional restoration. He has performed hundreds of complex eyelid reconstructions, addressing conditions such as ptosis, ectropion, and entropion with outcomes that preserve visual fields while delivering natural‑appearing results. His approach integrates layered tissue repair, meticulous scar placement, and the strategic use of autologous grafts to ensure durability and minimal postoperative discomfort. In cases of facial trauma, Dr. Hargrove employs three‑dimensional planning and custom‑fabricated implants to restore symmetry and maintain the delicate balance of facial expression.

In the realm of cataract surgery, Dr. Hargrove is renowned for his expertise in both standard phacoemulsification and advanced laser‑assisted techniques. He routinely utilizes femtosecond laser platforms to achieve precise capsulotomy creation, lens fragmentation, and corneal incisions, thereby reducing intraoperative stress on ocular tissues and enhancing visual recovery. His proficiency extends to the management of complex cataract scenarios, including dense brunescent lenses, subluxated lenses, and patients with coexisting ocular pathology. By combining state‑of‑the‑art technology with a nuanced understanding of anterior segment anatomy, he consistently achieves refractive outcomes that exceed patient expectations.

Beyond cataract removal, Dr. Hargrove excels in anterior segment surgery, encompassing procedures such as trabeculectomy, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), and corneal endothelial transplantation. His meticulous technique in these delicate interventions reflects a deep respect for the transparency and refractive integrity of the eye. In ophthalmic plastic surgery, he addresses both functional and cosmetic concerns, ranging from orbital decompression for thyroid eye disease to aesthetic blepharoplasty that harmonizes with facial proportions. Each operation is guided by a personalized treatment plan that prioritizes patient safety, aesthetic harmony, and long‑term ocular health.
