Dr. Regan Thomas - Plastic Surgeon in Chicago, IL

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Thomas’s academic journey began at Drury College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors, majoring in Biology and supplementing his studies with a minor in Human Anatomy. At Drury, he distinguished himself through a combination of scholarly excellence and community involvement, serving as a research assistant in a laboratory focused on tissue regeneration. His undergraduate experience laid a solid scientific foundation and ignited a fascination with the regenerative potential of human tissue, a curiosity that would later shape his surgical pursuits. Graduating summa cum laude, he was awarded the prestigious Drury Scholar Award for outstanding contributions to biomedical research.

Following his undergraduate success, Dr. Thomas pursued his medical degree at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, one of the nation’s leading institutions for clinical education and research. At Feinberg, he excelled in the rigorous curriculum, earning the Dean’s Teaching Award for his contributions as a peer tutor and securing a research fellowship in craniofacial development. His residency in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was marked by a series of honors, including the Resident of the Year award, reflecting his dedication to surgical mastery, academic inquiry, and compassionate patient care. During his training, Dr. Thomas completed a focused rotation in facial plastic surgery, where he refined his skills in delicate tissue handling, aesthetic judgment, and complex reconstructive techniques.

After completing his residency, Dr. Thomas pursued a fellowship at a premier facial plastic surgery center in New York City, where he worked under the mentorship of world‑renowned facial reconstructive surgeons. This fellowship provided intensive exposure to advanced rhinoplasty, facelift, and scar revision procedures, as well as the opportunity to participate in multicenter clinical trials evaluating novel graft materials and three‑dimensional imaging technologies. The fellowship culminated in a published case series on the long‑term outcomes of minimally invasive facial rejuvenation, establishing Dr. Thomas as an emerging thought leader in the field. His rigorous education and training have equipped him with a deep reservoir of knowledge, technical precision, and an evidence‑based mindset that informs every aspect of his practice.

Surgical Expertise

Rhinoplasty, often dubbed the “nose job,” stands as one of Dr. Thomas’s signature procedures, and his expertise in this area is distinguished by a meticulous balance of functional restoration and aesthetic refinement. He employs a patient‑specific, three‑dimensional planning protocol that integrates high‑resolution CT imaging, computer‑assisted design, and virtual simulation to predict postoperative outcomes with remarkable accuracy. By combining open and closed techniques as dictated by each case, Dr. Thomas can address structural deficiencies, correct congenital anomalies, and enhance nasal harmony while preserving the integrity of the surrounding tissues. His nuanced approach has resulted in a reputation for delivering outcomes that are both subtle and transformative, earning accolades from both patients and colleagues alike.

Facelifts, or rhytidectomy, represent another cornerstone of Dr. Thomas’s surgical repertoire, where his mastery of facial anatomy translates into rejuvenation that respects the natural aging process. He utilizes a layered approach that targets deep fascial planes, SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) manipulation, and precise skin redraping, thereby achieving lift, tightening, and contouring that endure for years. In addition to traditional techniques, Dr. Thomas incorporates adjunctive procedures such as fat grafting, platelet‑rich plasma (PRP) infusion, and laser resurfacing to address volume loss, texture irregularities, and skin laxity in a comprehensive, single‑session treatment plan. His commitment to individualized care ensures that each facelift is tailored to the patient’s unique skeletal structure, skin quality, and aesthetic goals.

Scar revision, particularly for facial scars resulting from trauma, previous surgery, or acne, demands both technical skill and a deep understanding of wound healing dynamics—areas where Dr. Thomas excels. He applies a multimodal strategy that may include subcision, laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, and strategic placement of autologous skin grafts or dermal matrices to remodel scar tissue, minimize pigmentation discrepancies, and restore natural skin texture. By leveraging cutting‑edge technologies such as fractional CO₂ lasers and microneedling combined with growth factor‑enriched serums, he accelerates tissue regeneration and optimizes scar appearance. Dr. Thomas’s comprehensive scar management protocols have produced outcomes that consistently exceed patient expectations, turning previously disfiguring lesions into barely perceptible marks.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Thomas’s practice, and his affiliations with leading professional societies underscore his dedication to the highest standards of clinical care. As a board‑certified member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (AAFPRS), he adheres to rigorous peer‑reviewed guidelines that govern operative techniques, postoperative protocols, and ethical patient interactions. His active participation in AAFPRS committees has allowed him to influence policy development, particularly in the realms of patient education and informed consent, ensuring that his patients receive transparent, evidence‑based information before any intervention.

Dr. Thomas’s credentials extend to the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery (ABFPS), where he not only achieved certification but also served as a Past President. In this leadership role, he championed initiatives aimed at standardizing surgical training, enhancing patient safety metrics, and fostering a culture of continuous quality improvement across the specialty. His stewardship contributed to the implementation of a national registry that tracks surgical outcomes, complications, and patient satisfaction, providing invaluable data that informs best practices and drives innovation. Through his involvement, Dr. Thomas has helped shape a framework that prioritizes patient welfare and surgical excellence.

Equally significant is Dr. Thomas’s longstanding relationship with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), where he served as Past President. During his tenure, he spearheaded a comprehensive patient safety program that integrated preoperative risk stratification tools, intraoperative monitoring technologies, and postoperative follow‑up protocols designed to minimize adverse events. He also advocated for the inclusion of patient‑reported outcome measures (PROMs) in clinical trials, emphasizing the importance of capturing the patient’s perspective on safety and satisfaction. Under his guidance, the ASPS instituted a series of safety workshops and webinars that disseminated these best‑practice guidelines to thousands of surgeons worldwide, reinforcing a global commitment to safeguarding patients.
