Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. DeJesus earned his medical degree from Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine, where he graduated at the top of his class, demonstrating an early aptitude for both clinical excellence and scholarly inquiry. During his time at the university, he distinguished himself through a series of research projects focused on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, laying a scientific foundation that would later inform his innovative reconstructive techniques. His academic rigor was complemented by a deep commitment to community service, as he regularly volunteered in underserved Caribbean clinics, providing essential surgical care and gaining a nuanced understanding of diverse patient populations.

Following medical school, Dr. DeJesus completed a demanding residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Virginia Health System, a program renowned for its comprehensive curriculum that blends aesthetic surgery with complex reconstructive challenges. Throughout his residency, he mastered a wide spectrum of procedures, from aesthetic facial rejuvenation to intricate microsurgical flap transfers. He earned accolades for his operative dexterity and leadership, serving as chief resident and spearheading a resident‑led research initiative that explored novel strategies for peripheral nerve regeneration, resulting in multiple peer‑reviewed publications.

To further refine his expertise, Dr. DeJesus pursued a prestigious fellowship in Microsurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, an institution celebrated for its groundbreaking work in vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation. Under the mentorship of world‑leading microsurgeons, he honed his skills in revascularization, replantation, and complex extremity reconstruction, performing high‑stakes surgeries that demanded sub‑millimeter precision and a profound understanding of tissue viability. His fellowship culminated in a capstone project that introduced a modified intra‑operative indocyanine green angiography protocol, now adopted by several leading centers to enhance flap perfusion assessment and reduce postoperative complications.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. DeJesus’s surgical repertoire encompasses the full breadth of modern plastic surgery, with a particular emphasis on reconstructive microsurgery. In the realm of aesthetic surgery, he is celebrated for his meticulous facial sculpting, employing advanced volumetric analysis and custom‑designed implants to achieve harmonious, natural‑looking results. His breast reconstruction program integrates autologous tissue techniques, such as the DIEP flap, with state‑of‑the‑art implant‑based methods, offering patients personalized options that prioritize both oncologic safety and aesthetic satisfaction. Each procedure is orchestrated with a patient‑centered approach that balances surgical ambition with realistic expectations, ensuring outcomes that are both stunning and sustainable.

In complex reconstruction, Dr. DeJesus has become a reference point for challenging cases that require multi‑disciplinary coordination. He has successfully performed extensive head and neck reconstructions following oncologic resections, employing free tissue transfer to restore both form and function while minimizing donor‑site morbidity. His expertise extends to extremity salvage, where he utilizes sophisticated microsurgical techniques to replant avulsed digits, restore arterial continuity, and reinnervate severed nerves, thereby preserving limb function and preventing amputation. These endeavors often involve intricate nerve coaptations, tendon repairs, and skeletal fixation, underscoring his ability to navigate the most demanding operative landscapes.

Beyond the operating room, Dr. DeJesus is a recognized authority in peripheral nerve surgery and hand surgery, frequently consulted for cases of traumatic nerve injury, compressive neuropathies, and congenital anomalies. His proficiency in nerve grafting, neurotization, and functional muscle transfer has restored sensation and motor function to countless patients, dramatically improving quality of life. He remains at the forefront of emerging technologies, integrating intra‑operative nerve monitoring and regenerative scaffolds to enhance outcomes, and routinely contributes his expertise to national conferences and peer‑reviewed journals.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. DeJesus’s practice, reflected in his active involvement with leading professional societies dedicated to advancing standards of care. He is a distinguished member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), where he serves on the Safety and Quality Committee, contributing to the development of evidence‑based guidelines that shape the national practice landscape. His dedication to microsurgical safety is further demonstrated through his participation in the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM), where he has presented data on flap failure mitigation and championed initiatives that promote standardized peri‑operative protocols.

Dr. DeJesus’s commitment to excellence has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Outstanding Clinical Research Award from the Society of Plastic Surgeons of North America (SPSNA) in 2020, an accolade that celebrated his pioneering work on tissue perfusion monitoring. In the same year, the ASPS bestowed upon him the prestigious Outstanding Clinical Research Award, acknowledging his contributions to the field of reconstructive surgery. Earlier, in 2018, he received the Best Surgeon Award from Sentara Medical Group, a testament to his consistent delivery of superior surgical outcomes and his unwavering dedication to patient well‑being.

Beyond accolades, Dr. DeJesus has instituted a comprehensive safety framework within his Bel Air practice that integrates pre‑operative risk stratification, meticulous intra‑operative monitoring, and robust post‑operative follow‑up. He employs cutting‑edge technologies such as real‑time fluorescence imaging, intra‑operative nerve monitoring, and high‑resolution ultrasound to detect early signs of vascular compromise or nerve injury. His team undergoes regular simulation training and participates in multidisciplinary morbidity and mortality conferences, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and transparency that ensures every patient receives the highest standard of care.
