Following medical school, Dr. Karlsberg pursued a residency in Dermatology at the University of California, Los Angeles, a program renowned for its intensive clinical exposure and innovative procedural training. At UCLA, he refined his diagnostic skills, mastering the art of identifying subtle dermatologic conditions and leveraging state‑of‑the‑art dermatoscopic techniques. The residency also afforded him unparalleled opportunities to work alongside leading dermatologic surgeons, where he performed a wide array of procedures ranging from Mohs micrographic surgery to complex reconstructive flap techniques. His commitment to excellence was recognized through multiple resident awards, reflecting his dedication to both patient care and academic advancement.

In addition to his formal residency, Dr. Karlsberg sought out fellowship‑level training in cosmetic dermatology, a decision that underscored his desire to blend medical rigor with aesthetic finesse. He completed a specialized fellowship in Laser Surgery, where he mastered the physics and clinical application of fractional CO₂ lasers, pulsed dye lasers, and emerging non‑ablative technologies. This intensive training equipped him with the expertise to address a spectrum of skin concerns—from pigmentary disorders to deep dermal resurfacing—while maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficacy. The fellowship also emphasized hands‑on experience in aesthetic procedures such as dermal filler placement, thread lifts, and minimally invasive facial contouring, further expanding his repertoire and solidifying his reputation as a versatile surgeon.

Throughout his educational odyssey, Dr. Karlsberg remained committed to lifelong learning, regularly attending national conferences, contributing to continuing medical education (CME) curricula, and mentoring aspiring dermatologists. His academic pedigree, combined with his relentless pursuit of cutting‑edge knowledge, positions him as a thought leader who bridges the gap between scholarly research and practical, patient‑focused care. This rigorous training not only informs his surgical precision but also fuels his ongoing contributions to the broader medical community, where he frequently shares insights on emerging technologies and best practices in aesthetic dermatology.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Karlsberg’s surgical expertise is anchored in a comprehensive understanding of dermatology, laser surgery, cosmetic dermatology, and restorative dermatology—a synergy that enables him to deliver outcomes that are both aesthetically superior and medically sound. His proficiency in dermatologic surgery encompasses a wide spectrum of procedures, from the removal of benign and malignant lesions to the intricate reconstruction of complex facial defects. By employing advanced techniques such as staged excision, tissue expansion, and microvascular free‑flap transfer, he restores both form and function with a meticulous eye for detail. Each operation is approached with a strategic plan that prioritizes optimal wound healing, scar minimization, and the preservation of critical anatomical structures.

Laser surgery represents a cornerstone of Dr. Karlsberg’s practice, where his mastery of both ablative and non‑ablative platforms allows him to treat an extensive array of cutaneous concerns. He utilizes fractional CO₂ lasers for deep resurfacing, achieving dramatic improvements in rhytids, acne scarring, and skin laxity, while preserving surrounding healthy tissue to accelerate recovery. For vascular lesions and rosacea, he employs pulsed dye lasers with precision, targeting hemoglobin chromophores to reduce erythema without compromising epidermal integrity. His expertise extends to emerging technologies such as picosecond lasers for tattoo removal and low‑level laser therapy for wound healing, ensuring his patients benefit from the most innovative, evidence‑based options available.

In the realm of cosmetic dermatology, Dr. Karlsberg combines artistic sensibility with scientific rigor to sculpt facial contours, rejuvenate skin, and enhance natural beauty. He is adept at injectable therapies, including hyaluronic acid fillers, calcium hydroxylapatite, and neuromodulators, employing a nuanced approach that respects the delicate balance of facial anatomy. His skillful use of thread lifts, biostimulatory fillers, and volumizing techniques produces subtle yet transformative results, tailored to each patient’s unique facial dynamics. Moreover, his expertise in skin resurfacing extends to chemical peels, microneedling, and radiofrequency devices, all of which he integrates into comprehensive aesthetic plans that address texture, tone, and volume loss.

Restorative dermatology is an area where Dr. Karlsberg’s compassionate care shines brightest. He specializes in reconstructive procedures following oncologic excisions, trauma, and congenital anomalies, employing a patient‑first methodology that emphasizes functional restoration alongside aesthetic excellence. His adeptness at scar revision—utilizing techniques such as Z‑plasty, W‑plasty, and subcision—helps patients achieve smoother, less conspicuous results. Additionally, he collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams, including plastic surgeons and oculoplastic specialists, to ensure seamless continuity of care for complex cases. This collaborative ethos underscores his commitment to delivering holistic solutions that restore confidence and quality of life.
