At Tulane, he distinguished himself not only through academic achievement but also through active participation in research projects focused on wound healing and tissue engineering. His early exposure to complex reconstructive challenges sparked a fascination with the transformative power of plastic surgery, prompting him to seek further specialization. The comprehensive medical education he received at Tulane laid a solid foundation in anatomy, physiology, and patient care, preparing him for the demanding residencies that would follow.
Following medical school, Dr. Steinwald pursued a residency in General Surgery at the University of Colorado, where he refined his operative skills across a broad spectrum of surgical disciplines. The University of Colorado’s residency program is distinguished for its high case volume, diverse patient population, and emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration. During his five‑year training, Dr. Steinwald honed his technical proficiency in abdominal, thoracic, and vascular procedures, while simultaneously developing a keen eye for aesthetic detail and an appreciation for the nuanced interplay between form and function. His exemplary performance earned him accolades from attending surgeons and peers alike, cementing his reputation as a diligent and innovative trainee.
Building upon his general surgery foundation, Dr. Steinwald completed a prestigious fellowship in Plastic Surgery at the University of Colorado, a program recognized nationally for its cutting‑edge research and commitment to surgical excellence. The fellowship offered him immersive exposure to both cosmetic and reconstructive subspecialties, including microsurgery, craniofacial reconstruction, and aesthetic facial surgery. Under the mentorship of world‑renowned plastic surgeons, he mastered complex techniques such as free‑tissue transfer, flap design, and facial nerve preservation. His fellowship culminated in a series of peer‑reviewed publications and presentations that explored novel approaches to scar revision and breast reconstruction, underscoring his dedication to advancing the field through scholarly contribution.
Surgical Expertise
Dr. Steinwald’s surgical repertoire spans the full continuum of plastic surgery, encompassing both aesthetic enhancements and life‑changing reconstructive procedures. In the realm of cosmetic surgery, he is celebrated for his ability to achieve natural‑looking results that respect each patient’s unique facial architecture. Whether performing rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, or facelifts, Dr. Steinwald employs refined, minimally invasive techniques that reduce operative time, limit scarring, and promote rapid recovery. His meticulous attention to detail ensures that each contour, line, and volume is harmoniously balanced, delivering outcomes that enhance confidence without compromising individuality.
Reconstructive surgery represents another cornerstone of Dr. Steinwald’s practice, where his expertise directly impacts patients recovering from trauma, cancer, or congenital anomalies. He is a board‑certified specialist in breast reconstruction, offering both implant‑based and autologous options such as the DIEP flap, which utilizes the patient’s own abdominal tissue to create a natural, lasting breast mound. His mastery of microsurgical techniques allows him to perform intricate free‑flap transfers with high success rates, restoring form and function while minimizing donor‑site morbidity. In addition to breast reconstruction, Dr. Steinwald routinely addresses complex facial defects, employing flap reconstruction, bone grafting, and nerve repair to restore both aesthetic appearance and essential functions such as speech and mastication.
Facial rejuvenation is a particular passion for Dr. Steinwald, who combines surgical precision with the latest non‑surgical adjuncts to achieve comprehensive rejuvenation. He skillfully integrates facelift procedures with adjunctive modalities such as thread lifts, fat grafting, and laser resurfacing, tailoring each treatment plan to the patient’s age, skin quality, and aesthetic goals. His approach is grounded in the principle of “less is more,” favoring subtle, progressive enhancements that age gracefully with the patient. By staying abreast of emerging technologies—such as volume‑preserving facial implants and regenerative stem‑cell therapies—Dr. Steinwald ensures that his patients benefit from the most advanced, evidence‑based options available.

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Steinwald’s practice, a principle reinforced by his active involvement in multiple professional societies and rigorous accreditation processes. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), he adheres to the society’s stringent ethical standards, participates in ongoing peer‑reviewed education, and contributes to national guidelines that promote safe surgical practices. His affiliation with the American Board of Plastic Surgery further underscores his commitment to maintaining the highest level of clinical competence, as he regularly undergoes board recertification and peer evaluation to ensure his skills remain current and exemplary.
Dr. Steinwald’s dedication to safety extends to his participation in the Colorado Society of Plastic Surgeons, where he collaborates with fellow surgeons to develop statewide protocols for infection control, postoperative monitoring, and emergency response. Through this collaborative network, he has helped implement standardized checklists and patient‑verification systems that reduce the incidence of intra‑operative errors and enhance postoperative outcomes. Moreover, his active membership in the American College of Surgeons provides him with additional resources for quality improvement initiatives, including participation in morbidity and mortality conferences that foster a culture of transparency and continuous learning.
