Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Desilva’s academic journey began at the prestigious University of Sri Lanka, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1982 with honors. The rigorous curriculum emphasized a solid foundation in anatomy, physiology, and pathology, laying the groundwork for her later specialization. During her medical school years, she distinguished herself through research on wound healing mechanisms, publishing her findings in peer‑reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences. This early exposure to scientific inquiry cultivated a lifelong dedication to evidence‑based practice, a hallmark that continues to shape her clinical decisions today.

Following her graduation, Dr. Desilva completed a comprehensive internal medicine residency at a tertiary care center renowned for its diverse patient population and complex case mix. The residency provided her with a deep understanding of systemic diseases, pharmacology, and the intricate interplay between chronic conditions and surgical outcomes. She excelled in managing high‑risk patients, mastering the art of balancing aggressive treatment with compassionate care. Her reputation for meticulous charting, diagnostic acumen, and collaborative teamwork earned her the Resident of the Year award, underscoring her commitment to excellence early in her career.

Seeking to broaden her expertise, Dr. Desilva pursued fellowship training in bariatric medicine, a decision driven by her desire to address the growing epidemic of obesity and its impact on surgical candidacy. The fellowship, conducted at a leading academic institution, immersed her in multidisciplinary care models that integrated nutrition, behavioral therapy, and advanced minimally invasive techniques. During this period, she performed over 200 bariatric procedures, honing her skill set in laparoscopic surgery, patient selection, and postoperative management. Her scholarly contributions during the fellowship included a seminal review on the role of metabolic surgery in reducing long‑term cardiovascular risk, which has since been cited extensively in clinical guidelines.

In internal medicine, she cultivated a nuanced understanding of systemic health that informs her peri‑operative risk assessments, ensuring that each patient’s comorbidities are meticulously optimized before any aesthetic intervention. Her bariatric medicine credentials have positioned her as a leader in weight‑loss surgery, where she combines cutting‑edge laparoscopic techniques with a compassionate, patient‑focused approach. Dr. Desilva performs sleeve gastrectomies, Roux‑en‑Y gastric bypasses, and revisional procedures with a track record of low morbidity and high patient satisfaction. She emphasizes pre‑operative counseling, nutritional education, and long‑term follow‑up, recognizing that sustainable weight loss is a continuum rather than a singular event. This accolade celebrated her pioneering implementation of a comprehensive safety protocol that integrates pre‑operative risk stratification, intra‑operative monitoring, and post‑operative surveillance. The protocol, now adopted by several regional hospitals, emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration, real‑time data analytics, and patient education, resulting in measurable reductions in surgical site infections, readmission rates, and unanticipated complications. Her proactive stance on safety extends to her practice’s robust emergency response plan, which includes on‑site availability of advanced life support equipment and a dedicated team trained in rapid response protocols.

Beyond formal recognitions, Dr. Desilva embodies a culture of transparency and continuous improvement.
