Meet Mojdah Akhavan: Philosophy and Approach
Dr. Mojdah Akhavan stands at the intersection of artistry and science, embodying a philosophy that views the human form as an ever‑evolving canvas rather than a static masterpiece. From the earliest days of her career, she has championed a patient‑centered paradigm that places the individual’s aspirations, cultural context, and unique anatomical features at the core of every procedural plan. This philosophy is not merely an abstract ideal; it is a daily practice manifested through meticulous consultations, where Dr. Akhavan invests hours listening, probing, and visualizing with patients to co‑create outcomes that are both aesthetically harmonious and functionally robust. She believes that true transformation extends beyond the superficial, fostering confidence, emotional well‑being, and lasting satisfaction.
Beyond her commitment to patient empowerment, Dr. Akhavan’s approach is deeply rooted in the principle of “precision with compassion.” In the operating room, this translates to a relentless pursuit of technical excellence—leveraging the latest minimally invasive techniques, state‑of‑the‑art imaging, and evidence‑based protocols—while simultaneously maintaining a humane, empathetic presence. She asserts that the surgeon’s role is as much about guiding patients through the emotional journey of change as it is about sculpting tissue. This dual focus has cultivated a reputation for delivering results that are not only visually striking but also psychologically affirming, a hallmark that distinguishes her practice in the competitive landscape of aesthetic medicine.
Dr. Akhavan also integrates a philosophy of lifelong learning and interdisciplinary collaboration. Recognizing that the boundaries between dentistry, orthodontics, and plastic surgery are fluid, she continually seeks insights from colleagues across specialties, ensuring that each patient benefits from a holistic, multi‑modal perspective. Whether consulting with maxillofacial surgeons to refine facial skeletal alignment or collaborating with dermatologists to optimize skin health pre‑ and post‑procedure, her practice is a nexus of expertise that amplifies the safety, efficacy, and artistry of every intervention. This collaborative spirit underscores her belief that the most profound transformations arise when diverse scientific voices converge toward a shared goal of patient excellence.

Rigorous Medical Education and Training
Dr. Akhavan’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of California, San Diego, where she graduated with honors and distinguished herself in cellular biology, anatomy, and biomechanics. Her undergraduate research, focusing on collagen synthesis and tissue remodeling, laid a foundational understanding of the molecular mechanisms that later informed her surgical techniques. The rigorous curriculum at UCSD, complemented by hands‑on laboratory experience, nurtured a disciplined analytical mindset that would become a cornerstone of her clinical decision‑making. Moreover, her involvement in interdisciplinary seminars fostered an early appreciation for the synergy between dental sciences and reconstructive surgery, foreshadowing her future integrative practice.
Building upon this strong scientific base, Dr. Akhavan pursued a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry, a program renowned for its emphasis on comprehensive oral health, surgical precision, and patient‑focused care. At USC, she excelled in both academic and clinical arenas, mastering advanced restorative techniques, oral pathology, and surgical extraction protocols. Her residency rotations exposed her to complex craniofacial cases, where she refined her skill set in maxillofacial reconstruction and learned to navigate the delicate balance between functional restoration and aesthetic outcome. The demanding nature of the DDS program, with its intensive cadaver labs and rigorous case presentations, honed her manual dexterity and cultivated a meticulous attention to detail that now defines her surgical practice.
Following her DDS, Dr. Akhavan embarked on specialized postgraduate training in orthodontics, further broadening her expertise in dentofacial orthopedics. This fellowship emphasized the intricate relationship between dental alignment, facial symmetry, and overall facial aesthetics, providing her with a nuanced perspective on how subtle dental adjustments can dramatically influence facial harmony. She completed comprehensive coursework in biomechanics, treatment planning, and digital orthodontic technologies, including the utilization of three‑dimensional imaging and computer‑aided design for precise bracket placement and aligner fabrication. The convergence of her dental, orthodontic, and surgical training equipped Dr. Akhavan with a unique skill set that seamlessly bridges the gap between structural correction and aesthetic enhancement, positioning her as a leader in both dental and plastic surgery domains.
Surgical Expertise
Dr. Akhavan’s surgical repertoire is anchored in a deep mastery of orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics, and the transformative power of both traditional braces and clear aligner systems. Her expertise in orthodontic mechanics enables her to orchestrate comprehensive treatment plans that address malocclusion, skeletal discrepancies, and facial asymmetry with unparalleled precision. She leverages state‑of‑the‑art digital scanning, virtual treatment simulations, and customized appliance fabrication to deliver predictable, efficient outcomes that often serve as the foundation for subsequent aesthetic procedures. By integrating orthodontic correction with plastic surgery, Dr. Akhavan ensures that each patient’s facial structure is optimally aligned before undertaking soft‑tissue enhancements, thereby maximizing long‑term stability and aesthetic harmony.
Beyond conventional orthodontic appliances, Dr. Akhavan is a pioneer in the application of clear aligner technology for complex dentofacial cases. She employs sophisticated software algorithms to map tooth movement trajectories, allowing for meticulous control over each incremental adjustment. This technology not only provides patients with a discreet, comfortable alternative to metal braces but also facilitates seamless coordination with surgical timelines. In many instances, she strategically utilizes aligners to pre‑condition the dental arches, creating the ideal platform for facial rejuvenation procedures such as chin augmentation, mandibular advancement, or midface lifts. Her ability to synchronize orthodontic and surgical interventions underscores a sophisticated, interdisciplinary approach that elevates patient outcomes to a new standard of excellence.
Dr. Akhavan’s skill set extends to the full spectrum of facial aesthetic surgery, where she applies her orthodontic insights to sculpting harmonious, natural‑looking results. She routinely performs rhinoplasty, facelifts, blepharoplasty, and lip augmentation, all while maintaining a keen awareness of the underlying skeletal framework shaped by her orthodontic expertise. This integrated perspective enables her to anticipate how changes in soft tissue will interact with dental alignment, ensuring that surgical modifications complement, rather than conflict with, the patient’s occlusal and skeletal dynamics. Furthermore, her proficiency in minimally invasive techniques, such as endoscopic brow lifts and thread lifts, reflects a commitment to reducing recovery time while preserving the structural integrity honed through years of precise dental manipulation. In every procedure, Dr. Akhavan’s surgical philosophy is guided by a relentless pursuit of balance—melding form, function, and patient desire into a cohesive, enduring result.
Commitment to Patient Safety
Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Akhavan’s practice, a principle reinforced through her active involvement with leading professional organizations such as the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the California Dental Association (CDA), and the American Dental Association (ADA). Her affiliation with these bodies not only reflects a dedication to staying abreast of evolving safety standards but also provides her with a platform to contribute to the development of best‑practice guidelines that protect patients across the continuum of care. Dr. Akhavan regularly participates in continuing education seminars, peer‑reviewed workshops, and safety audits, ensuring that her clinic adheres to the highest levels of infection control, anesthesia monitoring, and procedural sterility.
In recognition of her unwavering commitment to excellence, Dr. Akhavan has been honored with several prestigious awards that highlight both her clinical acumen and her patient‑focused ethos. The Top Orthodontist Award from San Diego Magazine in 2022 celebrated her innovative treatment protocols, outstanding patient satisfaction scores, and her role as a mentor to emerging clinicians. These accolades underscore a career built upon a foundation of safety, integrity, and an unrelenting pursuit of the highest standards in both dental and aesthetic surgery.
Beyond accolades, Dr. Akhavan has instituted a comprehensive safety infrastructure within her Chula Vista practice that integrates cutting‑edge technology with rigorous procedural checklists. She employs digital charting systems that flag potential contraindications, utilizes calibrated laser-guided devices for precise soft‑tissue manipulation, and maintains a fully stocked emergency response kit in every operatory. Her team undergoes regular simulation drills for adverse events, ensuring that every staff member is prepared to act swiftly and effectively. Moreover, Dr. Akhavan’s pre‑operative assessment protocol includes multidisciplinary case reviews, where orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons, and anesthesiologists collaborate to identify and mitigate risks before any incision is made. This layered approach to safety reflects her belief that the best outcomes arise from proactive, collaborative vigilance.
