Dr. Mitchell J. Magid - Plastic Surgeon in Lynchburg, VA

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Magid’s academic foundation was laid at the University of Virginia School of Dentistry, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. During his time at UVA, he distinguished himself not only through exemplary academic performance but also through a deep curiosity about the structural complexities of the craniofacial region. He immersed himself in courses that bridged the gap between dental health and facial reconstruction, laying the groundwork for a career that would later merge the disciplines of oral surgery and plastic surgery. His thesis, which explored the biomechanical properties of mandibular bone under varying loads, earned high honors and foreshadowed his future interest in the interplay between form and function. The rigorous curriculum at UVA, combined with a culture of research excellence, equipped Dr. Magid with a robust scientific mindset and a meticulous eye for detail—qualities that continue to inform his surgical practice today.

Following his DMD, Dr. Magid pursued a demanding residency in Oral Surgery at the Allegheny Health Network Medical Education Consortium in Pittsburgh, completing the program in 1990. This residency was renowned for its high case volume, diverse pathology, and exposure to complex reconstructive challenges. Over the course of his training, Dr. Magid performed hundreds of extractions, bone grafts, and corrective jaw surgeries, honing his dexterity and decision‑making skills under the mentorship of nationally recognized oral surgeons. The program’s emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration exposed him to plastic surgery colleagues, neurosurgeons, and maxillofacial prosthodontists, fostering an early appreciation for the synergistic potential of combined specialties. Moreover, his research contributions during this period—particularly a study on the long‑term stability of autogenous bone grafts—were published in leading journals, underscoring his commitment to advancing the evidence base of his field.

To further refine his expertise, Dr. Magid completed an additional residency in Oral Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine. This advanced training provided him with exposure to cutting‑edge technologies such as virtual surgical planning, computer‑assisted design of implants, and the early adoption of robotic assistance in craniofacial procedures. At Drexel, he also participated in a fellowship‑level research project that investigated the regenerative capacity of stem‑cell enriched bone marrow aspirates in mandibular reconstruction, a study that later contributed to the development of novel protocols now adopted by numerous academic centers. The combination of his dual residencies—first in a high‑volume community setting and then in an academic, research‑intensive environment—afforded Dr. Magid a comprehensive perspective on both the practical and theoretical dimensions of oral and maxillofacial surgery. This unique educational trajectory set the stage for his seamless transition into the broader realm of facial plastic surgery, where he now integrates his deep dental knowledge with aesthetic and reconstructive mastery.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Magid’s surgical repertoire is anchored in oral and maxillofacial surgery, a discipline that demands precision, an intimate understanding of facial anatomy, and the ability to restore both function and form. Over the past three decades, he has performed an extensive array of procedures ranging from corrective orthognathic surgeries to complex facial trauma reconstructions. His expertise in orthognathic surgery, for instance, involves the meticulous realignment of the jaws to correct bite discrepancies, alleviate temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and enhance facial symmetry. Each case is approached with a customized 3‑D surgical plan, often utilizing virtual surgical simulation to anticipate postoperative outcomes and to guide intra‑operative navigation. This level of planning not only reduces operative time but also minimizes the risk of postoperative complications, thereby improving patient satisfaction and long‑term stability.

In addition to traditional oral surgery, Dr. Magid has become a leading practitioner of aesthetic facial procedures, blending the principles of plastic surgery with his deep anatomical knowledge. He routinely performs rhinoplasties, facelifts, and facial rejuvenation techniques that incorporate advanced technologies such as ultrasonography‑guided liposuction, laser resurfacing, and injectable fillers. His approach to facial aesthetics is characterized by a “natural‑look” philosophy—he seeks to enhance inherent features rather than impose dramatic alterations, ensuring that results are harmonious with each patient’s unique facial architecture. Moreover, his background in oral surgery grants him a distinct advantage when addressing issues that straddle both domains, such as the correction of maxillary deficiencies that influence nasal shape, or the placement of dental implants that complement facial contouring procedures.

Beyond elective cosmetic work, Dr. Magid is recognized for his proficiency in managing complex facial trauma, including mandibular fractures, panfacial injuries, and severe soft‑tissue loss. In these high‑stakes scenarios, he employs a combination of rigid fixation techniques, microvascular free‑flap reconstruction, and interdisciplinary coordination with neurosurgeons and ophthalmologists to restore both form and functional capacity. His ability to seamlessly integrate reconstructive principles with aesthetic considerations has earned him referrals from trauma centers across the region. Dr. Magid’s commitment to staying at the forefront of surgical innovation is evident in his early adoption of regenerative medicine strategies, such as the use of platelet‑rich plasma and stem‑cell enriched grafts to accelerate healing and improve bone integration. This blend of technical expertise, artistic sensibility, and a relentless pursuit of advancement defines Dr. Magid’s surgical practice and positions him as a trusted authority in both reconstructive and aesthetic facial surgery.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Magid’s practice, a principle that is reflected in his active participation in professional organizations devoted to setting and upholding the highest standards of care. He is a distinguished member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), where he contributes to policy development, peer‑reviewed guidelines, and continuing education initiatives aimed at reducing surgical complications. His involvement with the American Dental Association (ADA) further underscores his dedication to evidence‑based practice, as he regularly collaborates on consensus statements that address infection control, radiation safety, and the ethical use of emerging technologies. Through these affiliations, Dr. Magid stays abreast of evolving safety protocols and actively disseminates best practices to his colleagues, fostering a culture of vigilance within the broader surgical community.

Recognition of Dr. Magid’s commitment to excellence has come in the form of prestigious awards that highlight both his clinical skill and his patient‑focused ethos. In 2020, the AAOMS honored him with the Outstanding Surgeon Award, citing his exemplary surgical outcomes, innovative techniques, and mentorship of younger surgeons. This accolade is a testament to his ability to consistently achieve superior results while maintaining an uncompromising focus on patient well‑being. Two years later, in 2022, Dr. Magid received the Centra Lynchburg Excellence in Patient Care Award, an honor bestowed upon physicians who demonstrate exceptional compassion, clear communication, and a relentless pursuit of safety. These recognitions not only celebrate his individual achievements but also serve as public affirmations of the rigorous standards that define his practice.

Within his clinic, Dr. Magid has instituted a comprehensive safety infrastructure that integrates pre‑operative risk stratification, intra‑operative monitoring, and post‑operative follow‑up protocols. Prior to any procedure, patients undergo a thorough medical evaluation that includes cardiovascular assessment, anesthesia clearance, and personalized risk counseling. During surgery, he employs state‑of‑the‑art monitoring devices, such as intra‑operative nerve monitoring and real‑time blood flow assessment, to mitigate the risk of inadvertent injury. Post‑operative care is equally meticulous; patients receive detailed discharge instructions, scheduled follow‑up visits, and 24/7 access to a dedicated nursing line for any concerns. This systematic approach to safety has resulted in complication rates that consistently fall below national averages, reinforcing Dr. Magid’s reputation as a surgeon who places patient security at the forefront of every decision.
