Dr. Michelle Putnam - Plastic Surgeon in Culver City, CA

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Putnam’s academic journey began at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on biomedical sciences. At UCLA, she distinguished herself not only through exemplary grades but also through active participation in research laboratories exploring craniofacial development and tissue engineering. Her undergraduate experience cultivated a deep appreciation for the underlying biological mechanisms that later informed her surgical practice, and she graduated with honors, reflecting a blend of intellectual curiosity and disciplined work ethic. The rigorous curriculum at UCLA, coupled with mentorship from leading physicians, laid a robust foundation for her subsequent medical pursuits.

Following her undergraduate studies, Dr. Putnam pursued a Master of Science at Boston University, concentrating on molecular biology and regenerative therapeutics. During her time in Boston, she contributed to groundbreaking investigations on stem‑cell mediated wound healing, authoring several peer‑reviewed publications that examined the interplay between growth factors and extracellular matrix remodeling. This graduate work sharpened her analytical skills and reinforced a research‑driven mindset that she would later apply to clinical innovations in aesthetic surgery. The demanding nature of her graduate program honed her ability to synthesize complex data, a skill that remains integral to her pre‑operative planning and postoperative assessment.

In 1998, Dr. Putnam earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Albany Medical College, where she distinguished herself as a top‑performing student in both the classroom and clinical rotations. At Albany, she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, reflecting her academic excellence and commitment to service. Her clinical clerkships exposed her to a breadth of surgical specialties, but she found a particular affinity for procedures involving the head, neck, and facial structures. This early exposure motivated her decision to specialize further, ultimately leading her toward otolaryngology‑head & neck surgery—a discipline that would serve as the technical backbone for her later work in aesthetic and reconstructive procedures.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Putnam’s surgical expertise is anchored in her board‑certified fellowship in otolaryngology‑head & neck surgery, a specialty that demands mastery of intricate anatomy, refined microsurgical techniques, and a profound understanding of functional and aesthetic considerations. Throughout her residency, she performed a high volume of complex procedures ranging from thyroidectomies and parathyroid surgeries to intricate facial reconstructions following oncologic resections. Each case reinforced her precision, dexterity, and ability to make swift, evidence‑based decisions under pressure—qualities that translate seamlessly into the realm of cosmetic surgery where meticulous tissue handling and aesthetic judgment are paramount.

Beyond conventional otolaryngologic interventions, Dr. Putnam has cultivated a niche in facial aesthetic surgery, integrating her deep anatomical knowledge with artistic sensibility. She routinely performs rhinoplasties, facelifts, and chin augmentations, employing a combination of open and minimally invasive techniques to achieve natural, harmonious results. Her proficiency in advanced technologies—such as computer‑assisted 3‑D modeling, laser resurfacing, and ultrasonic liposuction—allows her to tailor each procedure to the unique contours and aspirations of her patients. Moreover, Dr. Putnam’s expertise extends to reconstructive procedures following trauma or congenital anomalies, where her ability to restore both function and form has earned her the gratitude of countless individuals and their families.

Recognizing the evolving demands of modern aesthetic practice, Dr. Putnam has embraced adjunctive modalities that complement surgical outcomes. She is adept at administering dermal fillers, neuromodulators, and platelet‑rich plasma (PRP) therapies, integrating these non‑surgical options into comprehensive treatment plans that enhance skin quality and facial symmetry. Her commitment to continuous skill refinement is evident in her regular attendance at international conferences, hands‑on workshops, and peer‑reviewed symposiums, where she both learns from and contributes to the global discourse on facial rejuvenation. This relentless pursuit of excellence ensures that every patient who walks through her Culver City clinic receives care that reflects the highest standards of both science and artistry.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Putnam’s practice, a principle reinforced by her active involvement with the American Academy of Otolaryngology‑Head and Neck Surgery (AAO‑HNS). As a member of AAO‑HNS, she adheres to the organization’s stringent guidelines on surgical sterility, infection control, and peri‑operative monitoring, incorporating these protocols into every aspect of her clinical workflow. Dr. Putnam routinely participates in AAO‑HNS-sponsored safety audits, contributing data that help shape national standards for operative care. Her commitment to these best practices ensures that patients receive not only aesthetically superior outcomes but also the highest level of procedural safety.

Within the state, Dr. Putnam holds active membership in the California Society of Otolaryngology‑Head and Neck Surgery, where she collaborates with peers to develop region‑specific safety initiatives. In 2020, she was honored as Physician of the Year by the society, a distinction that recognized her unwavering dedication to clinical excellence, mentorship, and community outreach. This accolade highlighted her role in pioneering a comprehensive pre‑operative screening program that utilizes advanced imaging, genetic risk assessment, and multidisciplinary consultations to identify and mitigate potential complications before they arise. The program has since been adopted by multiple practices throughout Southern California, underscoring her influence on statewide patient‑care standards.

Dr. Putnam’s commitment to safety was further acknowledged in 2018 when she received the Excellence in Clinical Care Award, an honor bestowed upon physicians who demonstrate outstanding patient outcomes, innovative care pathways, and exemplary bedside manner. The award recognized her implementation of an evidence‑based postoperative monitoring protocol that employs wearable technology to track vital signs, pain levels, and wound healing in real time. This proactive approach enables early detection of adverse events, allowing for timely interventions that reduce readmission rates and accelerate recovery. Through these initiatives, Dr. Putnam not only safeguards her patients but also sets a benchmark for peer institutions aspiring to elevate their standards of care.
