Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Michael P. Choi’s academic foundation was forged at the Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1999. The curriculum at NSCOM emphasized a whole‑person approach to health, integrating osteopathic principles with rigorous biomedical science. During his four years of medical school, Dr. Choi excelled in both the basic sciences and clinical rotations, earning honors for his research on tissue regeneration and presenting his findings at national conferences. His commitment to academic excellence was matched by a deepening curiosity about surgical interventions, prompting him to pursue a residency that would allow him to translate theoretical knowledge into tangible patient outcomes.

Following medical school, Dr. Choi completed a demanding General Surgery residency at Peninsula Hospital Center in 2004. The program, known for its high case volume and diverse surgical exposure, provided him with a comprehensive skill set ranging from emergent trauma care to complex abdominal procedures. He distinguished himself as a resident who consistently demonstrated poise under pressure, meticulous technique, and a collaborative spirit that earned the respect of attending surgeons and peers alike. Throughout his residency, Dr. Choi actively participated in morbidity and mortality conferences, using each case as a learning opportunity to refine his operative judgment and enhance patient safety.

Recognizing the growing impact of obesity on public health, Dr. Choi pursued a one‑year Fellowship in Bariatric Surgery at the University of Miami in 2005. This fellowship immersed him in the latest advancements in metabolic surgery, including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux‑en‑Y gastric bypass, and emerging endoscopic techniques. Under the mentorship of renowned bariatric specialists, he mastered the nuances of pre‑operative metabolic assessment, intra‑operative navigation, and post‑operative nutritional management. The fellowship also emphasized multidisciplinary collaboration, integrating dietitians, psychologists, and exercise physiologists into a cohesive care team—a model that Dr. Choi would later adopt in his own practice to ensure comprehensive, long‑term support for his patients.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Choi’s surgical repertoire is anchored by a deep expertise in bariatric surgery, a field that demands both technical precision and an understanding of metabolic physiology. Over the past two decades, he has performed thousands of weight‑loss procedures, consistently achieving outcomes that exceed national benchmarks for excess weight loss, comorbidity resolution, and patient satisfaction. His proficiency spans the full spectrum of bariatric interventions, from laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy to revisional surgeries that address complications such as staple line leaks or inadequate weight loss. Dr. Choi remains at the forefront of bariatric innovation, incorporating enhanced recovery protocols, intra‑operative fluorescence imaging, and robotic assistance when appropriate to minimize operative time and accelerate postoperative recovery.

In addition to his bariatric focus, Dr. Choi maintains a robust practice in general surgery, handling a wide array of abdominal, thoracic, and soft‑tissue procedures. His experience includes complex hernia repairs, cholecystectomies, and colorectal resections, each performed with a meticulous attention to tissue handling and hemostasis. This breadth of general surgical experience provides him with a versatile skill set, allowing him to address unexpected intra‑operative findings and to tailor operative strategies to each patient’s unique anatomy. Dr. Choi’s commitment to minimally invasive techniques has reduced postoperative pain, shortened hospital stays, and lowered infection rates across his surgical portfolio.

Minimally invasive surgery is the cornerstone of Dr. Choi’s operative philosophy. Whether employing standard laparoscopic instrumentation or harnessing the precision of robotic platforms, he prioritizes approaches that limit tissue trauma while maximizing surgical efficacy. He has completed advanced training in robotic surgery, enabling him to perform intricate dissections with three‑dimensional visualization and enhanced dexterity. This expertise extends to endoscopic procedures, where he utilizes flexible scopes for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in the gastrointestinal tract. By integrating cutting‑edge technology with a foundation of sound surgical principles, Dr. Michael P. Choi delivers outcomes that are both safe and aesthetically superior.

As a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), he adheres to stringent guidelines that govern pre‑operative evaluation, operative technique, and postoperative follow‑up. His participation in ASMBS research committees has contributed to the development of evidence‑based protocols that reduce peri‑operative complications and improve long‑term metabolic outcomes. Dr. Choi also holds active membership in the American College of Surgeons (ACS), where he engages in continuous quality improvement initiatives and peer review activities that uphold the highest standards of surgical care.

Within the state of Florida, Dr. Choi is a respected member of the Florida Surgical Association, a body that emphasizes regional collaboration and the dissemination of best practices. His leadership role in this organization has facilitated statewide workshops on bariatric safety, focusing on topics such as intra‑operative leak detection, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways, and the management of obesity‑related comorbidities. These efforts have been recognized through prestigious honors, including the South Florida Top Bariatric Surgeon Award in 2022, which acknowledges his exceptional clinical outcomes, innovative techniques, and dedication to patient education. The award highlighted his ability to consistently achieve low complication rates while delivering transformative weight‑loss results.

In addition to professional accolades, Dr. Choi’s commitment to patient safety is reflected in the Patient Choice Award he received in 2021, a testament to the trust and satisfaction expressed by his patients.
