Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Baca’s academic journey began at the University of Michigan Medical School, where she earned her MD with honors, distinguishing herself through a series of research projects focused on tissue engineering and scar modulation. During her clinical rotations, she gravitated toward surgical specialties, drawn by the immediate impact of operative interventions on patient quality of life. Her senior thesis, which explored the role of extracellular matrix scaffolds in breast reconstruction, earned the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research and laid the groundwork for her future contributions to reconstructive surgery. The rigorous curriculum at Michigan, coupled with exposure to a diverse patient population, equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of both the scientific underpinnings and the humanistic aspects of medical care.

Following medical school, Dr. Baca pursued a coveted residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan, a program renowned for its blend of high‑volume reconstructive cases and pioneering aesthetic procedures. Over the course of her six‑year residency, she mastered the full spectrum of plastic surgical techniques, from microsurgical free‑flap transfers to complex facial rejuvenation. She completed a dedicated research year, publishing peer‑reviewed articles on the biomechanics of abdominal wall reconstruction and the long‑term outcomes of nipple‑sparing mastectomy. Her clinical acumen was further honed by serving as chief resident, where she led multidisciplinary tumor boards, coordinated resident schedules, and mentored junior trainees, fostering a collaborative environment that emphasized both safety and innovation.

To deepen her expertise in hand surgery—a subspecialty that demands extraordinary precision and an intimate knowledge of functional anatomy—Dr. Baca secured a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, one of the nation’s premier centers for hand and microsurgery. At Mayo, she refined her skills in complex tendon repairs, nerve grafting, and vascularized bone transfers, often managing cases involving high‑energy trauma and congenital anomalies. The fellowship emphasized a research‑driven approach, and Dr. Baca contributed to a multicenter study evaluating outcomes of distal radius fracture fixation using volar locking plates, which later influenced national practice guidelines. Her time at Mayo also instilled a culture of continuous quality improvement, as she participated in weekly morbidity and mortality conferences that scrutinized every nuance of surgical care, reinforcing an unwavering commitment to patient safety and optimal functional restoration.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Baca’s mastery of breast surgery encompasses both aesthetic augmentation and comprehensive reconstructive strategies, making her a go‑to surgeon for patients navigating the complex emotional terrain of breast transformation. In cosmetic breast augmentation, she utilizes a personalized implant selection process that considers chest wall dimensions, tissue thickness, and aesthetic goals, often employing three‑dimensional imaging to preview outcomes. Her reconstructive repertoire includes autologous tissue reconstruction using DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flaps, which preserve abdominal muscle function while delivering natural‑looking results. She is also proficient in oncoplastic techniques that integrate tumor resection with immediate reshaping, thereby minimizing the need for subsequent revisions. Dr. Baca’s dedication to preserving sensation and achieving symmetry has earned her numerous accolades from patient advocacy groups, and her research on postoperative sensory recovery has been cited widely in the plastic surgery literature.

In the realm of body contouring, Dr. Baca offers a full suite of procedures designed to sculpt the physique while respecting the body’s natural contours. Her expertise in abdominoplasty extends beyond traditional “tummy tuck” techniques; she incorporates progressive tension sutures, liposuction‑assisted fascial plication, and, when appropriate, the use of adjunctive laser therapies to enhance skin tightening. For patients seeking comprehensive transformation, she performs combined procedures such as thigh lift, arm lift, and lower body lift, always prioritizing staged approaches that balance safety with aesthetic ambition. Her meticulous attention to scar placement—often aligning incisions within natural skin creases—and her use of postoperative scar management protocols, including silicone sheeting and laser resurfacing, have resulted in consistently low rates of hypertrophic scarring and high patient satisfaction scores.

Dr. Baca’s cosmetic surgery portfolio also includes facial rejuvenation, rhinoplasty, and minimally invasive procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers. Her facial aesthetic philosophy emphasizes harmony, proportion, and the preservation of each patient’s unique facial identity. Whether performing a delicate eyelid lift to restore a youthful gaze or a comprehensive facial facelift that addresses sagging skin, deep nasolabial folds, and jowling, she integrates advanced technologies such as radiofrequency tightening and high‑definition liposuction to achieve natural‑looking results. In reconstructive surgery, she has restored form and function for patients following traumatic injuries, burns, and oncologic resections, employing free‑flap reconstructions, staged tissue expansion, and complex wound closure techniques. Her hand surgery practice, honed at Mayo Clinic, includes intricate procedures such as flexor tendon repairs, carpal tunnel releases, and reconstruction of congenital hand anomalies, all performed with microsurgical precision to restore maximal dexterity and minimize postoperative stiffness.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Dr. Baca’s unwavering dedication to patient safety is reflected in her active involvement with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), where she contributes to the development of evidence‑based guidelines for peri‑operative care. As a member of the ASPS Safety Committee, she has helped shape protocols that standardize pre‑operative risk assessment, intra‑operative monitoring, and postoperative follow‑up, ensuring that every patient benefits from a rigorously vetted care pathway. Her board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) underscores her adherence to the highest standards of clinical competence, as she must periodically demonstrate continued proficiency through rigorous examinations and peer‑reviewed case submissions. Dr. Baca also maintains active membership in the Michigan Society of Plastic Surgeons, collaborating with regional colleagues to implement statewide initiatives that reduce surgical site infections and promote responsible implant usage.

In 2024, Dr. Baca was honored as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, a distinction that recognizes physicians who demonstrate exceptional clinical expertise, compassionate patient care, and a reputation for excellence among peers. This accolade is the culmination of years of meticulous practice, continuous education, and a steadfast commitment to ethical standards. Her practice incorporates a comprehensive safety infrastructure, including a dedicated surgical safety officer, real‑time intra‑operative imaging, and a robust incident reporting system that captures even minor deviations from protocol. These mechanisms enable rapid root‑cause analysis and the implementation of corrective actions, fostering a culture where safety is not a static checklist but a dynamic, continuously evolving process.

Beyond institutional affiliations, Dr. Baca leads an in‑house quality improvement program that tracks outcomes across her entire surgical portfolio. She utilizes validated patient‑reported outcome measures (PROMs) to assess functional recovery, aesthetic satisfaction, and quality of life after procedures, feeding this data back into her practice to refine techniques and enhance patient counseling. Her commitment to education extends to her staff, whom she trains in the latest aseptic techniques, postoperative pain management strategies, and emergency response protocols. By integrating evidence‑based medicine with a compassionate, patient‑first ethos, Dr. Baca ensures that every operative encounter is anchored in safety, transparency, and the highest standard of care.
