Dr. Marialyn Sardo - Plastic Surgeon in La Jolla, CA

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Marialyn Sardo earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from a nationally recognized medical school, where she graduated with honors and was distinguished for her research on tissue regeneration and wound healing. During her pre‑clinical years, she immersed herself in anatomy, physiology, and surgical pathology, laying a robust scientific foundation that would later inform her nuanced understanding of facial and body contouring. Her academic excellence was complemented by a series of honors societies, where she demonstrated leadership in interdisciplinary collaborations and a commitment to community health outreach.

Following medical school, Dr. Sardo pursued a highly competitive residency in general surgery at a premier academic medical center, where she refined her operative skills under the mentorship of renowned surgeons. Her residency emphasized a rigorous curriculum of trauma management, oncologic resections, and complex reconstructive procedures, providing her with a comprehensive toolkit for addressing a wide spectrum of surgical challenges. Throughout this period, she distinguished herself through exemplary case logs, consistent top‑rank performance on in‑service examinations, and a reputation for meticulous technique and compassionate patient care.

Recognizing her passion for aesthetic transformation, Dr. Sardo completed a dedicated fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery at an institution celebrated for its innovation in cosmetic procedures. This fellowship afforded her exposure to cutting‑edge technologies such as three‑dimensional imaging, laser resurfacing, and minimally invasive body contouring. She contributed to peer‑reviewed publications on the optimization of breast implant placement and the long‑term outcomes of abdominal wall reconstruction, cementing her reputation as both a clinician and a scholar. The culmination of her education—a blend of rigorous academic training, hands‑on operative mastery, and a commitment to evidence‑based practice—has positioned Dr. Sardo as a leader in the field of aesthetic surgery.

Surgical Expertise

Breast augmentation stands as one of Dr. Sardo’s signature procedures, reflecting her deep understanding of both the anatomical intricacies and the aesthetic aspirations of her patients. She employs a personalized implant selection protocol that considers tissue quality, chest wall dimensions, and lifestyle factors, ensuring that each implant achieves a harmonious balance between projection, shape, and natural movement. Dr. Sardo is proficient in both subglandular and submuscular placement techniques, as well as the newer subfascial approach, and she routinely utilizes intra‑operative imaging to verify optimal positioning. Her meticulous attention to incision placement—whether inframammary, periareolar, or trans‑axillary—minimizes scarring while preserving the delicate blood supply essential for long‑term implant health.

Liposuction, another cornerstone of Dr. Sardo’s practice, is performed with a philosophy that prioritizes contour refinement over volume reduction. She leverages advanced technologies such as power‑assist liposuction, ultrasound‑assisted liposuction, and laser‑assisted lipolysis to target stubborn adipose deposits while preserving surrounding connective tissue and vascular networks. By employing a strategic, zone‑by‑zone approach, Dr. Sardo can sculpt the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and arms with a high degree of precision, producing results that appear both natural and enduring. Her postoperative protocol includes a structured compression regimen and progressive activity guidelines, which together facilitate optimal skin retraction and minimize the risk of seroma formation.

When it comes to abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), Dr. Sardo integrates a comprehensive assessment of the abdominal wall, taking into account factors such as diastasis recti, skin laxity, and previous surgical scars. She offers both full and mini‑tummy tuck options, tailoring the extent of dissection and fascial plication to each patient’s unique anatomy. Utilizing refined suturing techniques—such as progressive tension sutures and multilayered fascial closure—she reduces tension on the incision line, thereby decreasing the incidence of wound dehiscence and hypertrophic scarring. Moreover, Dr. Sardo incorporates adjunctive liposuction and fat grafting when appropriate, delivering a harmonious contour that extends beyond the abdomen to the hips and lower back. Her dedication to meticulous tissue handling, hemostasis, and layered closure underscores her reputation for delivering outcomes that are both aesthetically superior and functionally robust.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Dr. Sardo’s unwavering dedication to patient safety is reflected in her active membership with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the premier professional organization that sets the gold standard for ethical practice, education, and advocacy in aesthetic surgery. As an ASPS member, she adheres to the society’s rigorous guidelines on surgical sterility, patient consent, and postoperative monitoring. She regularly attends ASPS conferences, workshops, and cadaver labs, ensuring that her techniques remain aligned with the latest evidence‑based protocols and that she stays abreast of emerging safety measures such as enhanced recovery pathways and opioid‑sparing analgesia.

In recognition of her exemplary patient‑focused care, Dr. Sardo has been honored with the Patient Choice Award, a distinction bestowed upon physicians who consistently achieve high patient satisfaction scores, demonstrate transparent communication, and maintain a track record of low complication rates. This award is derived from independent patient surveys that evaluate factors such as bedside manner, clarity of information, and overall surgical outcome. The accolade not only underscores Dr. Sardo’s clinical excellence but also reflects her commitment to creating a supportive, empathetic environment that prioritizes the well‑being of every individual who entrusts her with their aesthetic goals.

Beyond accolades, Dr. Sardo implements a multi‑layered safety net within her practice. Pre‑operative assessments include comprehensive medical history reviews, laboratory testing, and risk stratification based on comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and smoking status. Intra‑operatively, she utilizes advanced monitoring technologies—including capnography, arterial line placement for high‑risk cases, and real‑time tissue perfusion imaging—to detect early signs of physiological compromise. Post‑operative care is coordinated through a dedicated nursing team that provides vigilant follow‑up, pain management, and wound surveillance, ensuring that any potential complications are identified and addressed promptly. This systematic approach to safety reflects Dr. Sardo’s belief that the highest quality outcomes are achievable only when patient protection is embedded into every phase of care.
