She earned the distinction of Chief Resident, a role that required her to mentor junior trainees, coordinate multidisciplinary case conferences, and spearhead quality‑improvement initiatives that reduced postoperative infection rates by 30 percent across the department.

To further specialize, Dr. Skelsey completed a fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, a program celebrated for its rigorous training in oncologic skin surgery and its integration of reconstructive techniques. Under the mentorship of world‑renowned Mohs surgeons, she mastered the precise, layer‑by‑layer excision method that ensures complete tumor clearance while preserving maximal healthy tissue. Her fellowship research focused on optimizing margin assessment algorithms, resulting in a peer‑reviewed publication that has been cited extensively in dermatologic oncology literature. This scholarly contribution cemented her reputation as a thought leader in the field and laid the groundwork for her subsequent transition into aesthetic plastic surgery.

Throughout her educational journey, Dr. Skelsey has maintained a steadfast commitment to lifelong learning, regularly attending national conferences, contributing to peer‑reviewed journals, and participating in hands‑on workshops that explore emerging technologies such as robotic-assisted microsurgery and 3‑D printed scaffolds for soft‑tissue reconstruction. Her comprehensive training—spanning a top‑tier medical school, a world‑class dermatology residency, and a specialized Mohs fellowship—provides a unique blend of oncologic vigilance, reconstructive expertise, and aesthetic finesse that distinguishes her practice in the competitive landscape of cosmetic surgery.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Skelsey’s surgical repertoire is anchored in a profound understanding of dermatologic principles, which she seamlessly translates into the realm of aesthetic plastic surgery. Her expertise in Mohs micrographic surgery equips her with an unparalleled ability to excise pathological tissue with microscopic precision while simultaneously preserving critical aesthetic units of the face and neck. This meticulous approach has been instrumental in her development of innovative reconstructive techniques that minimize scarring, maintain facial symmetry, and accelerate postoperative healing. By integrating Mohs principles with advanced flap design and tissue expansion strategies, Dr. Skelsey can achieve oncologic safety without compromising cosmetic outcomes—a dual priority that sets her apart from many of her peers.

In addition to her oncologic credentials, Dr. Skelsey is a master of dermatologic surgery, having performed thousands of procedures ranging from simple excisions to complex facial reconstructions. Her skill set includes the use of high‑resolution imaging modalities such as optical coherence tomography and confocal microscopy to delineate lesion margins pre‑operatively, thereby reducing the need for extensive tissue removal. She also employs state‑of‑the‑art laser technologies—fractional CO₂, pulsed dye, and Q‑switched lasers—to address a broad spectrum of skin concerns, including pigmentary disorders, vascular lesions, and texture irregularities. These modalities are often combined with minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox® injections, dermal fillers, and thread lifts, enabling her to deliver comprehensive rejuvenation plans that address both functional and aesthetic goals.

Beyond dermatologic interventions, Dr. Skelsey has expanded her surgical armamentarium to include a full suite of aesthetic plastic surgery techniques. She is proficient in facial rejuvenation procedures such as rhytidectomy (facelift), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and midface lifts, each performed with an emphasis on preserving natural facial dynamics and avoiding the “over‑done” appearance that can plague less experienced surgeons. Her expertise also extends to body contouring, including liposuction, abdominoplasty, and thigh lifts, where she utilizes tumescent infiltration, power‑assist devices, and meticulous hemostasis to achieve sculpted results with minimal postoperative discomfort. In breast surgery, she offers a range of options from augmentation and mastopexy to reconstruction, drawing upon her deep knowledge of tissue vascularity and implant technology to tailor each procedure to the patient’s anatomy and aesthetic preferences.

Central to Dr. Skelsey’s surgical philosophy is the concept of “personalized anatomy,” which recognizes that each patient’s unique structural framework demands a customized operative plan. To this end, she employs advanced pre‑operative simulation software that integrates three‑dimensional imaging, facial analysis, and predictive modeling, allowing patients to visualize potential outcomes before entering the operating room. This technology not only enhances patient confidence but also serves as a valuable intra‑operative guide, ensuring that surgical landmarks are respected and that the final result aligns with the patient’s aspirations. Through this blend of rigorous dermatologic training, cutting‑edge technology, and artistic sensibility, Dr. Skelsey delivers surgical outcomes that are both safe and aesthetically superior.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Maral Skelsey’s practice, a principle reinforced by her active involvement in several preeminent professional societies. As a distinguished member of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), she adheres to the Academy’s stringent standards for clinical excellence, continuous education, and ethical practice. Her leadership role within the AAD has included chairing the Patient Safety Committee, where she has spearheaded initiatives to develop evidence‑based protocols for infection control, peri‑operative antimicrobial stewardship, and postoperative monitoring. These protocols have been adopted by multiple dermatology and plastic surgery practices nationwide, underscoring her influence on the broader medical community.

Dr. Skelsey’s commitment to safety extends to her participation in the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS), where she earned the prestigious Distinguished Service Award for her contributions to advancing Mohs technique safety. In this capacity, she has authored guidelines on intra‑operative margin assessment, standardized specimen handling, and postoperative wound management that have been incorporated into the ACMS curriculum. Additionally, her work with the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) has earned her the Leadership in Dermatology Award, recognizing her ability to foster a culture of safety through mentorship, peer review, and the implementation of quality‑improvement metrics that track complication rates, patient satisfaction, and long‑term outcomes.
