During his time at the University of Utah, he distinguished himself as a scholar‑practitioner, engaging in extensive clinical rotations that spanned general surgery, dermatology, and reconstructive procedures. His academic performance consistently placed him in the top percentile of his class, earning him honors such as the Dean’s List and the Distinguished Scholar Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine. The rigorous training environment cultivated his analytical acumen, surgical dexterity, and a deep appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration, laying the groundwork for his future specialization in plastic and aesthetic surgery.
Following medical school, Dr. Machan pursued a comprehensive residency in dermatology, where he refined his expertise in cutaneous pathology, procedural dermatology, and cosmetic interventions. His residency program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), provided a structured yet dynamic platform for mastering both medical and surgical dermatology. Throughout his residency, he completed a dedicated Mohs micrographic surgery fellowship, gaining unparalleled proficiency in tissue-sparing oncologic excision techniques. His commitment to excellence was recognized with the Resident Research Award, reflecting his contributions to peer‑reviewed publications on skin cancer management and innovative reconstructive strategies.
In addition to his formal education, Dr. Machan has continuously sought advanced training opportunities to augment his surgical skill set. He attended specialized workshops in laser dermatology, facial rejuvenation, and body contouring, many of which were led by internationally acclaimed masters of aesthetic surgery. These immersive experiences allowed him to master cutting‑edge technologies such as fractional CO₂ lasers, high‑intensity focused ultrasound, and ultrasonography‑guided fat grafting. By integrating this ongoing education into his practice, Dr. Machan ensures that his patients benefit from the most current, evidence‑based techniques available in contemporary plastic surgery.
Surgical Expertise
Dr. Machan’s surgical repertoire is anchored by his mastery of Mohs micrographic surgery, a precise, tissue-conserving method for excising cutaneous malignancies. Over the course of his career, he has performed more than 4,000 Mohs procedures, achieving cure rates exceeding 99% and dramatically reducing the need for extensive reconstructive surgery. His expertise extends beyond oncologic excision to include complex reconstructive challenges such as flap design, graft integration, and aesthetic optimization of surgical scars. By employing real‑time histopathologic evaluation, Dr. Machan can tailor excision margins to the exact dimensions of tumor infiltration, preserving healthy tissue and minimizing postoperative morbidity.
In the realm of dermatology, Dr. Machan is equally adept at both medical and surgical interventions. His background in surgical dermatology equips him to address a broad spectrum of skin conditions, ranging from benign neoplasms to intricate vascular lesions. He routinely utilizes advanced laser platforms to treat pigmentary disorders, scar remodeling, and skin resurfacing, leveraging technologies such as picosecond lasers and fractional ablative systems to achieve superior aesthetic outcomes. His comprehensive understanding of cutaneous anatomy, wound healing dynamics, and laser‑tissue interaction enables him to customize treatment protocols that align with each patient’s unique skin type and therapeutic goals.
Beyond Mohs and dermatologic surgery, Dr. Machan has cultivated a distinguished practice in aesthetic plastic surgery, encompassing facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation, body contouring, and minimally invasive procedures. His surgical philosophy emphasizes natural, harmonious results that respect the patient’s intrinsic features while enhancing age‑related changes. He employs state‑of‑the‑art techniques such as trans‑axillary breast augmentation, 3‑D volumetric analysis for facial fat grafting, and high‑definition liposuction to deliver precise, durable outcomes. Each procedure is meticulously planned using computer‑assisted simulation, allowing patients to visualize potential results and make informed decisions prior to incision.
