Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Liviu Saimovici earned his medical degree (MD) from the prestigious University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Carol Davila” in Bucharest, Romania, an institution renowned for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on both scientific inquiry and clinical excellence. During his time at Carol Davila, he distinguished himself not only through academic achievement but also through an early fascination with ocular anatomy and visual physiology, participating in research projects that explored corneal biomechanics and retinal pathophysiology. His dedication to mastering the fundamentals of medicine laid a solid foundation for the specialized training that would follow, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of systemic health as it relates to ocular function.

Following his graduation, Dr. Saimovici pursued a residency in Ophthalmology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, a program celebrated for its blend of cutting‑edge surgical techniques and deep-rooted commitment to patient‑centered care. At Mount Sinai, he refined his surgical dexterity under the mentorship of internationally recognized ophthalmic surgeons, gaining extensive experience in cataract extraction, glaucoma management, and complex retinal procedures. His residency was marked by a relentless pursuit of perfection, as evidenced by his participation in numerous clinical trials investigating novel intraocular lens designs and his authorship of peer‑reviewed articles on postoperative visual outcomes.

To further specialize his expertise, Dr. Saimovici completed a fellowship in Refractive Surgery at the Scripps Eye Institute, a leading hub for innovation in laser vision correction. During this fellowship, he mastered the intricacies of LASIK, PRK, and emerging femtosecond laser platforms, while also contributing to groundbreaking research on wavefront‑guided ablation patterns and corneal wound healing. The fellowship emphasized not only technical mastery but also the development of a meticulous pre‑operative assessment protocol, integrating topography, tomography, and ocular surface analysis to tailor each procedure to the individual patient’s unique corneal architecture. This comprehensive training trajectory, spanning three continents and multiple elite institutions, equips Dr. Saimovici with a rare blend of scientific depth, surgical precision, and global perspective.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Saimovici’s surgical repertoire is anchored in a profound understanding of ophthalmology, with a particular emphasis on refractive surgery—a field that demands both exacting technical skill and an artistic eye for visual outcomes. His expertise encompasses the full spectrum of corneal and lens‑based procedures, ranging from routine cataract extraction to the most sophisticated laser‑assisted refractive interventions. In cataract surgery, he employs premium intraocular lenses that correct pre‑existing astigmatism and presbyopia, thereby delivering patients a seamless transition to clear, unaided vision. His meticulous approach to capsulorhexis, phacoemulsification, and lens implantation has consistently yielded superior visual acuity and reduced postoperative complications.

Within the realm of refractive surgery, Dr. Saimovici has become a nationally recognized authority on LASIK (Laser‑Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). He utilizes the latest femtosecond laser platforms to create precise corneal flaps, minimizing stromal disruption and enhancing biomechanical stability. His PRK protocols incorporate advanced epithelial healing agents and customized topography‑guided ablations, allowing for safe correction of high‑order aberrations in patients with thinner corneas. Each procedure is preceded by a comprehensive diagnostic work‑up, including wavefront analysis, corneal tomography, and ocular surface assessment, ensuring that the chosen surgical plan aligns perfectly with the patient’s refractive error, corneal thickness, and lifestyle demands.

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Saimovici is an avid contributor to the scientific literature, regularly presenting his findings at international conferences and publishing in peer‑reviewed journals. His research interests include the long‑term stability of corneal refractive outcomes, the role of ocular biomechanics in postoperative ectasia prevention, and the integration of artificial intelligence‑driven diagnostic tools to refine patient selection. This commitment to continuous learning and innovation not only advances the field of ophthalmology but also translates into tangible benefits for his patients, who receive care that is both evidence‑based and at the forefront of technological progress.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety stands as the cornerstone of Dr. Saimovici’s practice, a principle reinforced by his active involvement in several premier professional societies. He is a distinguished member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), where he contributes to the development of clinical guidelines that set the standard for safe ophthalmic care across the United States. His participation in the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) further underscores his dedication to establishing rigorous safety protocols for laser‑based procedures, including the implementation of pre‑operative risk stratification tools and postoperative monitoring frameworks that dramatically reduce the incidence of complications such as corneal haze and infection.

Internationally, Dr. Saimovici maintains a collaborative relationship with the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), sharing best practices and engaging in cross‑border research initiatives aimed at harmonizing safety standards worldwide. His leadership within these organizations has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Top Doctor Award from New York Magazine in 2022, which recognized his exceptional clinical outcomes and unwavering commitment to patient well‑being. In 2021, the American Academy of Ophthalmology honored him with the Best Refractive Surgeon award, a testament to his mastery of laser technologies and his proactive approach to mitigating intra‑operative risks.

Further affirming his reputation for excellence, Dr. Saimovici received the Patient’s Choice Award in 2023 for his Saimovici Lasik practice, reflecting the high satisfaction rates and trust placed in him by his patients. These honors are complemented by his active role in the Mount Sinai Alumni Association, where he mentors emerging ophthalmologists on the importance of safety culture, meticulous documentation, and continuous quality improvement. By integrating rigorous safety standards into every aspect of his practice—from pre‑operative counseling to postoperative follow‑up—Dr. Saimovici ensures that each patient’s journey is safeguarded by the highest levels of clinical vigilance and ethical responsibility.
