Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Linda J. Leffel earned her medical degree from the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine, an institution renowned for its emphasis on research, community health, and interdisciplinary education. During her time at OHSU, she distinguished herself academically, graduating with honors and completing a senior thesis that explored the molecular pathways of wound healing in scar tissue. Her research was subsequently published in a peer‑reviewed journal, laying the groundwork for her later innovations in scar management and regenerative techniques. The rigorous curriculum at OHSU, combined with early exposure to hands‑on clinical rotations in both urban and rural settings, equipped her with a versatile skill set and a profound appreciation for patient diversity.

Following medical school, Dr. Leffel pursued a general surgery residency at a tertiary academic medical center, where she refined her operative fundamentals, honed her decision‑making under pressure, and cultivated an unwavering commitment to surgical safety. Her residency was marked by numerous accolades, including the Resident Excellence Award for outstanding clinical performance and a research grant focused on reducing post‑operative infection rates in abdominal surgery. These experiences deepened her understanding of tissue handling, hemostasis, and the importance of meticulous postoperative care—principles that would later become hallmarks of her plastic surgery practice.

After completing her general surgery residency, Leffel entered a competitive integrated plastic surgery fellowship, where she received specialized training in both reconstructive and aesthetic procedures. Her fellowship mentors, leaders in microsurgery and facial rejuvenation, guided her through complex cases ranging from free‑flap reconstructions of traumatic defects to intricate rhinoplasties. She earned board certification in plastic surgery after successfully passing rigorous oral and written examinations administered by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Throughout her training, she remained actively involved in scholarly activities, presenting at national conferences and publishing case series that emphasized innovative techniques for minimizing scarring and optimizing aesthetic outcomes.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Leffel’s surgical repertoire spans the full spectrum of plastic and reconstructive surgery, allowing her to address a wide array of patient needs with precision and artistry. In the realm of aesthetic surgery, she is renowned for her mastery of facial rejuvenation, including facelifts, brow lifts, and eyelid surgery, where she combines traditional lift techniques with modern volumizing strategies to achieve natural, age‑appropriate results. Her approach to breast surgery—encompassing augmentation, reduction, lift, and reconstruction—emphasizes individualized implant selection, meticulous pocket creation, and scar minimization, resulting in outcomes that balance form, function, and patient satisfaction.

Beyond aesthetic procedures, Dr. Leffel excels in reconstructive surgery, particularly in the management of complex craniofacial trauma and congenital anomalies. She routinely performs microvascular free‑flap transfers, leveraging her deep understanding of vascular anatomy to restore both form and function in patients with severe tissue loss. Her expertise extends to hand surgery, where she repairs intricate tendon injuries, conducts nerve decompressions, and performs reconstructive procedures that restore dexterity and alleviate chronic pain. Each reconstructive case is approached with a multidisciplinary mindset, often collaborating with otolaryngologists, neurosurgeons, and physical therapists to achieve comprehensive rehabilitation.

In addition to operative skill, Dr. Leffel is a pioneer in the integration of minimally invasive technologies. She incorporates laser resurfacing, radiofrequency skin tightening, and advanced dermal fillers into her practice, offering patients non‑surgical options that deliver subtle yet meaningful enhancements. Her proficiency with 3D imaging and computer‑assisted surgical planning enables precise pre‑operative simulations, allowing patients to visualize potential results and make informed decisions. This blend of traditional surgical craftsmanship with cutting‑edge technology underscores her commitment to delivering safe, effective, and aesthetically superior care.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Leffel’s practice, a principle reinforced by her active involvement in several premier professional societies. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), she adheres to the organization’s stringent standards for ethical practice, continuing education, and peer review. Her participation in ASPS committees has allowed her to influence policy development aimed at enhancing surgical safety protocols, data transparency, and patient education across the specialty. Additionally, her affiliation with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) reflects a broader commitment to surgical excellence, as she regularly contributes to ACS initiatives that promote peri‑operative safety checklists, infection control measures, and outcomes research.

Within the state of Oregon, Dr. Leffel is an active member of the Oregon State Medical Association, where she collaborates with fellow physicians to address regional health disparities and promote patient‑centered care models. Her leadership role in the Oregon Plastic Surgery Society was highlighted when she was honored as Physician of the Year in 2020, a distinction that recognized her unwavering dedication to safety, innovation, and community service. This award was accompanied by a series of lectures she delivered on risk mitigation, including the implementation of evidence‑based protocols for venous thromboembolism prophylaxis and the use of intra‑operative neuromonitoring to reduce nerve injury during complex reconstructive cases.

Dr. Leffel’s practice also incorporates a robust internal quality‑improvement program that tracks surgical outcomes, patient satisfaction scores, and complication rates in real time. She employs a multidisciplinary safety committee that reviews each case pre‑operatively, ensuring that risk factors such as comorbidities, medication interactions, and lifestyle considerations are thoroughly evaluated. Post‑operative care is equally rigorous, with standardized follow‑up schedules, wound‑monitoring protocols, and rapid response pathways for any adverse events. This comprehensive safety infrastructure not only minimizes complications but also fosters a culture of transparency and continuous learning among her surgical team.
