Dr. Leo Malin - Plastic Surgeon in La Crosse, WI

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Leo Malin’s academic journey began with a deep fascination for the structural complexities of the human face, prompting him to pursue a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) at the prestigious University of Wisconsin School of Dentistry, from which he graduated in 1991. The rigorous curriculum emphasized not only foundational dental sciences but also the integration of emerging technologies such as digital radiography and computer‑assisted design, laying a robust groundwork for his future surgical endeavors. Throughout his dental school years, Dr. Malin distinguished himself as a scholar‑practitioner, earning honors for research on alveolar bone remodeling and presenting at national conferences on restorative dentistry.

Following his DDS, Dr. Malin sought to expand his clinical repertoire by entering the Residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota, completing the program in 1994. This intensive three‑year residency demanded mastery of a broad spectrum of surgical interventions, ranging from routine extractions to complex craniofacial reconstructions. Under the mentorship of world‑renowned surgeons, he refined his skills in microsurgical techniques, vascularized bone grafting, and postoperative wound management. The residency’s emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration exposed him to orthopedics, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery, fostering a holistic perspective that would later become the hallmark of his practice.

During his residency, Dr. Malin also engaged in a series of research projects that explored the biomechanical properties of mandibular fixation devices and the long‑term outcomes of distraction osteogenesis. His findings were published in peer‑reviewed journals, contributing valuable insights to the field and reinforcing his reputation as a clinician‑scientist. The combination of rigorous academic training, hands‑on surgical experience, and a commitment to evidence‑based practice equipped Dr. Malin with a unique blend of dental precision and surgical artistry, preparing him to bridge the worlds of dentistry and plastic surgery with unparalleled expertise.

Surgical Expertise

Armed with a comprehensive foundation in dentistry, Dr. Leo Malin has cultivated an expansive surgical portfolio that extends well beyond conventional dental practice. In the realm of implantology, he has become a leading authority on the placement of endosseous implants, employing state‑of‑the‑art guided surgery protocols to achieve optimal angulation, depth, and prosthetic integration. His meticulous attention to bone quality assessment, combined with the use of computer‑guided surgical stents, ensures predictable osseointegration and minimizes postoperative complications. Dr. Malin’s implant work is distinguished by its aesthetic sensibility; he routinely coordinates with prosthodontists and dental laboratory technicians to design restorations that seamlessly blend with natural dentition, delivering functional and visually harmonious results.

Beyond implant placement, Dr. Malin’s expertise in oral surgery encompasses a wide array of complex procedures, including sagittal split osteotomies, Le Fort I fractures, and reconstructive grafts for patients with congenital anomalies or traumatic injuries. His proficiency in microsurgical techniques enables precise manipulation of neurovascular bundles, reducing the risk of sensory deficits and enhancing postoperative recovery. In cases requiring bone augmentation, he employs autogenous grafts, allografts, and recombinant bone morphogenetic proteins, tailoring each approach to the patient’s unique anatomical and systemic considerations. This versatility allows him to address challenges such as severe ridge resorption, atrophic maxillae, and compromised occlusal relationships with confidence and creativity.

Dr. Malin’s surgical acumen also extends into the aesthetic domain, where he integrates principles of plastic surgery to refine facial contours, correct asymmetries, and rejuvenate soft tissue structures. By collaborating with board‑certified plastic surgeons, he performs adjunctive procedures such as chin augmentation, mandibular angle reduction, and chin‑lip complex enhancements, leveraging his deep understanding of facial biomechanics. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that patients receive comprehensive care that addresses both functional imperatives and aesthetic aspirations, resulting in outcomes that are both durable and naturally beautiful. His reputation for delivering consistent, high‑quality results has attracted referrals from across the Midwest and solidified his status as a trusted surgical specialist.
