Read about this doctor's medical background and experience.
Lawrence J. Chase, M.D., embodies a philosophy that blends artistic vision with scientific precision, a duality that he believes is essential for any plastic surgeon who aspires to create lasting, harmonious results. From his earliest encounters with the human form—studying anatomy in the lecture halls of Sidney Kimmel Medical College to observing the delicate interplay of tissue in the operating suite—Dr. Chase cultivated a reverence for the body as both a functional structure and a canvas for personal expression. He maintains that every patient arrives with a unique narrative, and his role is to translate that narrative into a physical reality that respects both the individual's aesthetic aspirations and their physiological integrity. This patient‑centered approach is reinforced by a commitment to transparent communication, meticulous pre‑operative planning, and a collaborative decision‑making process that ensures each surgical plan is tailored to the patient's specific lifestyle, cultural background, and long‑term health goals.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Chase’s philosophy extends into a broader commitment to continuous learning and mentorship. He regularly convenes interdisciplinary case conferences that bring together dermatologists, orthopedists, and psychologists to discuss complex reconstructive challenges, thereby fostering a culture of shared expertise that elevates the standard of care for his entire community. He also devotes significant time to teaching residents and fellows, believing that the future of plastic surgery depends on the transmission of both technical skill and the ethical framework that underpins responsible practice. In his view, the surgeon’s responsibility does not end with a successful incision; it includes nurturing the next generation of clinicians who will carry forward the values of empathy, precision, and integrity.
Dr. Chase’s approach is also deeply rooted in the principle of holistic wellness. He integrates advanced imaging technologies, such as three‑dimensional photographic mapping and computer‑assisted design, to provide patients with realistic visualizations of potential outcomes, reducing uncertainty and enhancing satisfaction. Simultaneously, he collaborates with nutritionists, physical therapists, and mental health professionals to address pre‑operative conditioning and post‑operative recovery, recognizing that optimal surgical results are achieved when the body is prepared holistically. This synthesis of art, science, education, and comprehensive care defines Dr. Chase’s distinctive practice model and has earned him a reputation as a surgeon who not only transforms appearances but also empowers patients to embrace their renewed self‑confidence.
Recognized medical specialties.
Lawrence J. Chase earned his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, an institution renowned for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on research-driven clinical practice. During his time at Jefferson, Dr. Chase distinguished himself in the anatomy labs, where he not only mastered the intricate details of human musculature and vascular networks but also contributed to a pioneering study on tissue regeneration that was later published in a leading surgical journal. His academic excellence was recognized with the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Clinical Performance, an honor that underscored his early dedication to integrating scientific inquiry with compassionate patient care.
Following medical school, Dr. Chase pursued a residency in plastic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio—Joe and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, completing his training in 1979. The residency program, known for its demanding surgical volume and diverse case mix, offered him exposure to complex reconstructive procedures ranging from microsurgical free‑flap transfers to intricate craniofacial corrections. Under the mentorship of trailblazing surgeons such as Dr. William P. McCormick, Dr. Chase refined his technical proficiency, learning to navigate the delicate balance between aesthetic refinement and functional restoration. He earned the Resident Scholar Award for his research on the biomechanics of scar formation, a project that laid the groundwork for later innovations in scar management protocols.
In addition to his formal training, Dr. Chase sought out fellowships and specialized workshops that broadened his expertise in hand surgery and cosmetic techniques. He attended advanced microsurgery courses at the University of Michigan and participated in international conferences in Paris and Tokyo, where he exchanged ideas with global leaders in tissue engineering and aesthetic innovation. This commitment to lifelong education equipped him with a versatile skill set that enables him to address a wide spectrum of patient needs, from delicate hand tendon repairs to high‑profile facial rejuvenation procedures. The combination of a solid foundation in academic medicine, intensive surgical residency, and continuous professional development has cemented Dr. Chase’s reputation as a surgeon whose knowledge is both deep and expansive.

In the realm of plastic surgery, he has mastered procedures ranging from rhinoplasty and breast augmentation to complex abdominal wall reconstructions. His approach to aesthetic surgery is grounded in a philosophy of natural enhancement, whereby the goal is to accentuate the patient’s inherent beauty rather than impose a one‑size‑fits‑all aesthetic. He utilizes state‑of‑the‑art techniques such as autologous fat grafting, laser‑assisted resurfacing, and minimally invasive lift methods, ensuring that each intervention minimizes scarring while maximizing long‑term durability.
Hand surgery represents another cornerstone of Dr. Chase’s practice, where his expertise in both acute trauma and chronic degenerative conditions has restored function to countless patients. He performs delicate microsurgical nerve repairs, tendon transfers, and reconstructive procedures for congenital anomalies, often employing cutting‑edge technologies like intra‑operative nerve monitoring and 3‑D printed surgical guides. His reputation for restoring dexterity extends to high‑performance athletes and industrial workers alike, where swift, precise intervention can mean the difference between a full return to sport or a career‑ending injury. Dr. Chase’s hand surgery successes are reflected in his frequent invitations to present case studies at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) annual meetings.
Reconstructive surgery, perhaps the most demanding facet of his practice, showcases Dr. Chase’s ability to blend technical virtuosity with compassionate care. He has led multidisciplinary teams in the management of complex oncologic resections, employing free‑flap reconstructions to restore both form and function after tumor removal. His work in burn reconstruction includes innovative scar contracture releases and the use of cultured epithelial autografts to achieve optimal outcomes in patients with extensive skin loss. Moreover, Dr. Chase’s commitment to advancing reconstructive techniques is evident in his ongoing research collaborations focused on bioengineered tissue scaffolds, a field that promises to revolutionize the future of wound healing. Each reconstructive case he undertakes is approached with a holistic view, ensuring that surgical success translates into improved quality of life for his patients.
