His early exposure to cutting‑edge laboratory work ignited a fascination with the cellular mechanisms that underlie wound healing, a curiosity that would later inform his reconstructive techniques. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Dr. Godwin served as a teaching assistant for anatomy labs, honing his ability to convey complex concepts with clarity—a skill that now benefits his patients during pre‑operative education.

Following his graduation, Dr. Godwin pursued a demanding residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), a program celebrated for its breadth of clinical exposure and commitment to surgical excellence. At UPMC, he rotated through high‑volume centers specializing in microsurgery, craniofacial reconstruction, and aesthetic breast procedures, gaining hands‑on experience that spanned the full spectrum of plastic surgery. He completed a one‑year fellowship in Cosmetic Breast Surgery at a leading private practice, where he refined his mastery of implant selection, mastopexy techniques, and patient‑specific aesthetic planning. He also participated in an intensive microsurgical course at the Cleveland Clinic, mastering the delicate art of free‑flap transfer for complex reconstructive challenges. These supplemental experiences equipped Dr. Godwin with a versatile skill set that seamlessly integrates reconstructive rigor with aesthetic finesse, positioning him as a surgeon capable of addressing both functional deficits and cosmetic aspirations with equal proficiency.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Godwin’s surgical repertoire encompasses the full gamut of modern plastic surgery, ranging from intricate reconstructive procedures to sophisticated cosmetic interventions. In the realm of reconstructive surgery, he has performed countless successful reconstructions following oncologic resections, traumatic injuries, and congenital deformities. His expertise in microsurgical free‑flap techniques allows him to restore tissue integrity and vascularity in challenging cases, such as the reconstruction of complex head‑and‑neck defects using radial forearm and anterolateral thigh flaps. Each reconstructive case is approached with a multidisciplinary mindset, coordinating with oncology, radiology, and rehabilitation teams to ensure that functional recovery is achieved alongside aesthetic restoration.

In the cosmetic arena, Dr. Godwin is renowned for his nuanced approach to breast surgery, offering patients a spectrum of options that include augmentation, reduction, mastopexy, and the increasingly popular hybrid procedures that combine implants with autologous fat grafting. He employs a meticulous pre‑operative planning process that incorporates three‑dimensional imaging, allowing patients to visualize potential outcomes and participate actively in the decision‑making process. His mastery of incision placement, pocket dissection, and implant selection minimizes scarring and optimizes long‑term symmetry, resulting in natural‑looking results that endure. Moreover, Dr. Godwin stays at the forefront of emerging technologies, integrating the latest high‑profile silicone implants and biologic meshes to enhance durability and aesthetic harmony.

Beyond breast work, Dr. Godwin’s body‑contouring expertise includes abdominoplasty, liposuction, thigh lifts, and gluteal augmentation. He utilizes advanced liposuction techniques such as power‑assist and ultrasound‑assisted liposuction to achieve smooth, uniform fat removal while preserving vital structures. For patients seeking comprehensive transformation, Dr. Godwin coordinates staged procedures that address multiple aesthetic goals, ensuring that each operation is timed to allow optimal healing and maximal results.
