Dr. Karlene Guasteferro - Plastic Surgeon in Nashville, TN

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Karlene Guasteferro’s academic journey began with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Dental Hygiene from Erie Community College, where she distinguished herself as a top‑performing student in both clinical practice and foundational sciences. The rigorous curriculum demanded mastery of infection control protocols, patient assessment techniques, and preventive care strategies, laying a solid groundwork for her later forays into surgical disciplines. During this time, Guasteferro honed her dexterity and attention to detail through hands‑on laboratory work, mastering the precise hand‑eye coordination essential for both dental procedures and microsurgical interventions. Her early exposure to patient interaction cultivated a deep appreciation for compassionate care, a trait that would become a hallmark of her practice.

Following her dental hygiene certification, Guasteferro pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, an interdisciplinary degree that broadened her understanding of human behavior, cognition, and emotional health. While the institution of her BA is not specified, the program’s emphasis on developmental psychology, counseling techniques, and research methodology equipped her with a nuanced perspective on the psychosocial dimensions of aesthetic medicine. This unique blend of scientific rigor and humanistic insight sharpened her ability to assess the psychological motivations behind patients’ desires for surgical enhancement, allowing her to tailor treatment plans that address both physical outcomes and emotional well‑being. Her psychological training also refined her communication skills, enabling her to navigate sensitive conversations with empathy and clarity.

The culmination of Guasteferro’s formal education arrived with the attainment of a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, a credential that underscores her mastery of oral anatomy, surgical techniques, and comprehensive patient care. Although the specific dental school is not listed, the DDS curriculum demands extensive training in oral pathology, restorative procedures, and advanced surgical protocols. Guasteferro’s dental education provided an unparalleled foundation in craniofacial anatomy, a critical advantage when transitioning to plastic surgery focused on facial aesthetics. The rigorous surgical rotations, cadaveric dissections, and patient‑centered case studies embedded within the DDS program cultivated her precision, patience, and problem‑solving abilities—attributes that translate seamlessly to the nuanced demands of aesthetic plastic surgery. Together, these educational milestones forged a multidisciplinary expertise that uniquely positions Guasteferro to deliver transformative, safe, and patient‑focused outcomes.

Surgical Expertise

Karlene Guasteferro’s surgical repertoire is rooted in a comprehensive background in general dentistry, which serves as an essential platform for her proficiency in facial aesthetic procedures. Her experience in general dentistry required a mastery of oral health maintenance, diagnosis of complex dental conditions, and execution of surgical interventions ranging from simple extractions to intricate periodontal surgeries. This breadth of practice cultivated an intimate familiarity with the oral cavity’s delicate structures, including the alveolar bone, soft tissue attachments, and neurovascular networks. The precision demanded by dental surgery—often performed under magnification and with microsurgical instruments—directly informs her approach to facial contouring, ensuring that each incision and tissue manipulation is executed with the utmost care and exactitude.

Preventive dentistry, a cornerstone of Guasteferro’s early career, underscored the importance of early detection, patient education, and proactive intervention. By emphasizing routine examinations, prophylactic cleanings, and risk‑assessment protocols, she cultivated a preventive mindset that now permeates her aesthetic practice. This preventive philosophy translates into meticulous preoperative planning, where comprehensive assessments of skin quality, tissue elasticity, and anatomical landmarks are conducted to anticipate potential complications and optimize surgical outcomes. Guasteferro’s dedication to preventive care also informs her postoperative regimen, wherein she provides patients with tailored guidance on wound care, scar management, and lifestyle modifications that support long‑term aesthetic stability.

Restorative dentistry further refined Guasteferro’s skill set, demanding an intricate balance of functional reconstruction and aesthetic harmony. Restorative procedures, such as crowns, bridges, and implant placements, require an artistic eye to recreate natural tooth morphology while preserving occlusal function. This dual focus on form and function is directly applicable to plastic surgery, where the goal is to enhance appearance without compromising physiological integrity. Guasteferro’s expertise in restorative dentistry has honed her ability to sculpt three‑dimensional structures, anticipate how tissues will respond to tension and compression, and achieve seamless integration of grafts and implants. These capabilities empower her to perform complex facial rejuvenation procedures, including facelifts, rhinoplasty, and chin augmentations, with a level of precision that reflects her dental roots and her commitment to aesthetic excellence.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the bedrock upon which Karlene Guasteferro builds every aspect of her practice, a principle reinforced by her active affiliations with prestigious professional organizations. As a member of the American Dental Association (ADA), Guasteferro adheres to the highest standards of clinical governance, infection control, and ethical practice. The ADA’s rigorous guidelines mandate continuous quality improvement initiatives, peer‑reviewed research participation, and strict compliance with evidence‑based protocols—all of which Guasteferro integrates into her surgical workflow. By aligning her practice with ADA standards, she ensures that each procedure is performed in a sterile environment, that patient records are meticulously maintained, and that any adverse events are promptly identified and addressed.

In addition to her national affiliation, Guasteferro maintains active membership in her State Dental Association, a body that champions state‑specific legislative advocacy, continuing education, and community outreach. This dual involvement allows her to stay abreast of regional regulatory updates, local health trends, and emerging safety initiatives that directly impact her patients in Nashville and beyond. Moreover, her participation in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) underscores her dedication to lifelong learning and peer collaboration. The AGD’s Outstanding Service Award, which Guasteferro proudly received, recognizes her exemplary contributions to the field, including the development of safety protocols, mentorship of junior clinicians, and leadership in community health programs. This accolade reflects her unwavering commitment to elevating the standards of care for both her patients and the broader dental and surgical communities.

Guasteferro’s commitment to safety extends beyond conventional clinical settings into the dynamic realm of locum tenens practice, where she was honored with the Locum Tenens Excellence Award. This distinction celebrates her adaptability, rigorous adherence to safety standards, and exceptional patient outcomes across diverse clinical environments. Whether operating in a high‑volume hospital, a boutique surgical center, or a temporary practice site, Guasteferro consistently implements comprehensive safety checklists, employs advanced monitoring technologies, and fosters a culture of vigilance among her surgical teams.
