Dr. Joshua A. Greenwald - Plastic Surgeon in Harrison, NY

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Greenwald earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the prestigious Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he graduated with honors and was recognized for his research on tissue remodeling and scar minimization. His academic tenure at Columbia was marked by a relentless pursuit of scientific excellence; he authored multiple peer‑reviewed articles on the molecular mechanisms of wound healing and presented his findings at national conferences, establishing early on his reputation as a forward‑thinking clinician‑scientist. Throughout medical school, he maintained a top percentile ranking on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and was awarded the Dean’s Clinical Excellence Scholarship for his outstanding performance in clinical rotations.

Following medical school, Dr. Greenwald completed a rigorous General Surgery residency at the NewYork‑Presbyterian Hospital, one of the nation’s busiest tertiary care centers. During his five‑year residency, he honed his operative dexterity across a broad spectrum of procedures, ranging from complex abdominal reconstructions to intricate vascular repairs. He distinguished himself by consistently achieving operative times well below institutional averages and by receiving commendations for his meticulous attention to intra‑operative detail and postoperative care. His residency culminated in a chief resident position, where he supervised junior residents, organized interdisciplinary case conferences, and contributed to the development of a resident‑led quality improvement initiative that reduced surgical site infection rates by 22%.

To specialize further, Dr. Greenwald pursued a dedicated Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan’s Department of Plastic Surgery, a program renowned for its innovative techniques in aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. During this fellowship, he mastered advanced microsurgical methods, including free flap transfers and nerve coaptation, and was mentored by several pioneers in facial rejuvenation and breast reconstruction. He completed a research fellowship concurrently, publishing a landmark study on the long‑term durability of silicone versus saline implants that influenced national guidelines. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Greenwald earned board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, cementing his expertise and commitment to the highest standards of surgical practice.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Greenwald’s proficiency in breast augmentation is distinguished by his ability to blend anatomical precision with artistic nuance. He employs a patient‑specific approach that begins with a thorough assessment of chest wall dimensions, skin elasticity, and aesthetic goals, followed by the selection of implant type, size, and placement that best complement the individual’s body proportions. Utilizing the latest in pre‑operative three‑dimensional imaging, he can simulate postoperative results with remarkable accuracy, allowing patients to visualize the projected contour, projection, and symmetry before any incision is made. His surgical technique emphasizes a dual‑plane pocket creation that minimizes implant visibility and capsular contracture while preserving natural breast movement, a method refined through years of meticulous practice and continuous outcome analysis.

In the realm of liposuction, Dr. Greenwald is celebrated for his commitment to sculptural finesse and safety. He integrates tumescent infiltration with power‑assist technology to achieve smooth, even fat removal while preserving vital subdermal structures. His protocol includes a personalized mapping of adipose deposits, which he addresses through a combination of traditional suction and emerging laser‑assisted lipolysis when appropriate, thereby enhancing skin tightening and reducing postoperative edema. Dr. Greenwald’s postoperative care regimen incorporates compression garments, targeted lymphatic massage, and a structured activity progression plan, all of which contribute to optimal contour retention and patient satisfaction. His results consistently demonstrate a harmonious balance between volume reduction and natural body lines, a testament to his meticulous technique and deep understanding of three‑dimensional body geometry.

When performing abdominoplasty (commonly known as a “tummy tuck”), Dr. Greenwald adopts a comprehensive strategy that addresses both excess skin and underlying muscular laxity. He begins each case with an exhaustive physical examination that evaluates the integrity of the rectus abdominis muscles, the quality of dermal tissue, and the presence of any concomitant abdominal hernias. His operative plan may incorporate plication of the abdominal wall, precise excision of redundant skin, and strategic placement of drains to mitigate seroma formation. Dr. Greenwald also integrates adjunctive liposuction in the flank and lumbar regions to achieve a seamless silhouette, and he utilizes meticulous layered closure techniques that reduce tension on the incision line, thereby diminishing scar visibility. Postoperatively, he provides a customized recovery blueprint that includes graduated activity, scar management with silicone therapy, and regular follow‑up visits to monitor healing and address any concerns promptly.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety sits at the core of Dr. Greenwald’s practice philosophy, and his affiliation with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) underscores his dedication to adhering to the most rigorous standards in the field. As an active ASPS member, he participates in ongoing professional development programs, attends quarterly safety webinars, and contributes to the society’s peer‑reviewed case registries, which collectively foster a culture of continuous improvement and evidence‑based practice. Dr. Greenwald also serves on the ASPS Committee on Patient Safety, where he helps shape national guidelines on peri‑operative protocols, infection control, and postoperative monitoring, ensuring that his patients benefit from the latest advancements in safety science.

In recognition of his unwavering focus on patient outcomes, Dr. Greenwald was honored with the prestigious Patient Choice Award, an accolade bestowed upon physicians who consistently achieve superior patient satisfaction scores across a broad range of metrics, including communication, pain management, and overall experience. The award reflects not only his technical skill but also his empathetic bedside manner, his transparent approach to informed consent, and his commitment to delivering care that aligns with each patient’s personal expectations. The rigorous patient feedback process that informs the award includes detailed surveys, in‑depth interviews, and post‑procedure follow‑up, all of which Dr. Greenwald reviews meticulously to identify opportunities for refinement.

Beyond accolades, Dr. Greenwald has instituted a multi‑layered safety infrastructure within his Harrison office that mirrors the highest standards of hospital‑based care. This includes a pre‑operative checklist modeled after the World Health Organization’s Surgical Safety Checklist, a dedicated anesthesia team trained in advanced airway management, and a sterile processing department that follows CDC‑mandated sterilization protocols. He also employs a real‑time electronic health record (EHR) system that flags any potential drug interactions, allergy concerns, or contraindications before surgery commences. In the postoperative phase, he utilizes telemedicine platforms for remote monitoring of wound healing, pain levels, and functional recovery, allowing for rapid intervention should any complication arise. Together, these measures create a safety net that safeguards patients at every step of their surgical journey.
