Dr. Heistein began his academic journey at the University of Vermont, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, graduating with honors and distinguishing himself as a leader among his peers in pre‑medical societies. During his undergraduate years, he immersed himself in research projects that explored cellular regeneration and wound healing, experiences that sparked his fascination with the body's innate capacity for repair and aesthetic restoration. His commitment to academic excellence was complemented by a series of extracurricular pursuits, including volunteering at community health clinics and serving as a mentorship coordinator for underclassmen aspiring to enter the medical field. This blend of scholarly rigor and service-oriented mindset laid a solid foundation for his subsequent medical education.

Continuing his pursuit of medical knowledge, Dr. Heistein obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). At UMDNJ, he distinguished himself in the rigorous curriculum, earning accolades for his performance in anatomy, physiology, and surgical rotations. He was a recipient of the Dean’s Award for Clinical Excellence, a testament to his keen diagnostic acumen and compassionate bedside manner. While at UMDNJ, he also participated in a groundbreaking research initiative investigating the molecular pathways of scar formation, resulting in a publication in a peer‑reviewed surgical journal. These scholarly contributions underscored his early commitment to advancing the scientific underpinnings of plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Following medical school, Dr. Heistein completed a residency in General Surgery at Ohio State University, where he refined his operative skills across a spectrum of complex abdominal, thoracic, and vascular procedures. The demanding environment at Ohio State exposed him to high‑volume trauma cases, intricate oncologic resections, and emergent surgical interventions, fostering an adaptability and poise under pressure that would become hallmarks of his later practice. He earned the Resident of the Year award for his dedication to patient safety and his proactive involvement in quality‑improvement initiatives. Building upon this robust foundation, Dr. Heistein pursued a subsequent residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, an elite program renowned for its emphasis on both aesthetic and reconstructive disciplines. At UT Southwestern, he trained under distinguished faculty, mastering microsurgical techniques, aesthetic facial procedures, and complex breast reconstruction. His scholarly output during this period included multiple presentations at national conferences and co‑authorship of a seminal textbook chapter on autologous tissue transfer. The comprehensive training he received at these premier institutions equipped Dr. Heistein with the technical expertise, research proficiency, and compassionate patient care philosophy that define his practice today.

Within reconstructive surgery, Dr. Heistein has earned a reputation for his meticulous breast reconstruction work, particularly following mastectomy for oncologic patients. He employs a combination of autologous tissue techniques, such as the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap, and implant‑based reconstruction, tailoring each plan to the patient’s anatomy, oncologic requirements, and personal preferences. His nuanced understanding of vascular anatomy, flap inset, and postoperative monitoring enables him to achieve high success rates with minimal complications, preserving both form and function. Moreover, Dr. Heistein is a recognized expert in complex wound management, scar revision, and burn reconstruction, integrating multidisciplinary care with physical therapy and occupational rehabilitation to optimize functional outcomes. His dedication to reconstructive excellence extends to craniofacial anomalies, where he collaborates with pediatric specialists to address congenital defects, employing microsurgical techniques that restore both appearance and vital physiological functions.

Beyond individual procedures, Dr. Heistein’s expertise is reflected in his ability to orchestrate comprehensive aesthetic surgery programs that address multiple concerns in a single operative session. He routinely performs combined procedures—such as a breast augmentation with a tummy tuck and liposuction—leveraging synergistic healing patterns to reduce overall recovery time and improve patient satisfaction. His practice is also at the forefront of integrating emerging technologies, including 3‑D printing for custom surgical guides, regenerative medicine for enhanced wound healing, and the use of bio‑resorbable implants in facial reconstruction.
