Meet Jonathan Frankel: Philosophy and Approach
Jonathan Frankel, MD, stands at the intersection of artistic vision and scientific rigor, a philosophy that informs every facet of his practice in Beachwood, Ohio. From his earliest days as a medical student, he recognized that the human face is not merely a collection of anatomical structures but a dynamic canvas that conveys identity, emotion, and social interaction. This insight drives his commitment to treating each patient as a unique individual, rather than a set of procedural codes, and underpins his holistic approach to aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. In his own words, the goal is not simply to “fix” a defect but to restore confidence, dignity, and a sense of self‑ownership, which he believes is the most profound outcome a surgeon can achieve.
Frankel’s approach is anchored in a deep respect for the natural aging process and the subtle variations that define each person’s facial topography. He eschews a one‑size‑fits‑all mentality, instead employing meticulous pre‑operative analysis that incorporates three‑dimensional imaging, detailed facial proportion studies, and an open dialogue with patients about their aspirations and concerns. By integrating technology with a refined aesthetic sensibility, he crafts surgical plans that harmonize with the patient’s existing features, ensuring that any enhancements appear seamless, timeless, and, most importantly, authentic to the individual’s character. This patient‑centered methodology has become a hallmark of his practice, earning him a reputation for delivering results that are both technically precise and artistically nuanced.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Frankel is a fervent advocate for patient education and empowerment. He dedicates extensive time to explaining the anatomy of the face, the mechanics of various procedures, and the realistic expectations of postoperative recovery. His commitment to transparency extends to discussing potential risks, alternative treatments, and the long‑term implications of surgical choices, thereby fostering an environment of trust and informed consent. This educational ethos not only demystifies the surgical process but also cultivates a collaborative partnership where patients feel actively involved in shaping their own aesthetic journey.

Rigorous Medical Education and Training
Jonathan Frankel earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, an institution renowned for its rigorous curriculum, cutting‑edge research facilities, and a culture that emphasizes both scientific inquiry and compassionate patient care. During his four years at Michigan, he immersed himself in a diverse array of clinical rotations, mastering the fundamentals of internal medicine, surgery, and pathology while also engaging in research projects that explored the molecular underpinnings of wound healing and scar formation. His academic excellence was recognized through multiple honors, including the Dean’s List and a scholarship awarded for outstanding performance in surgical anatomy, which foreshadowed his future specialization in head and neck surgery.
Following medical school, Dr. Frankel pursued a residency in Otolaryngology at University Hospitals, a program distinguished for its comprehensive exposure to complex airway management, intricate skull base surgery, and advanced reconstructive techniques. Over the course of five intense years, he refined his technical skills in microsurgical dissection, endoscopic procedures, and facial trauma reconstruction, while also developing a keen clinical acumen for diagnosing and treating a wide spectrum of ENT disorders. He emerged from residency with a reputation for meticulous operative technique, a calm demeanor in high‑pressure situations, and a deep appreciation for the interdisciplinary collaboration required in modern surgical practice.
Recognizing the need for specialized expertise in aesthetic and reconstructive facial surgery, Dr. Frankel completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s premier centers for craniofacial innovation. Under the mentorship of world‑leading facial surgeons, he honed his proficiency in rhinoplasty, facelifts, brow lifts, and complex reconstructive procedures that restore both form and function after oncologic resections or traumatic injuries. The fellowship emphasized a blend of artistic insight and evidence‑based practice, encouraging him to adopt the latest minimally invasive technologies, such as ultrasonic bone-cutting devices and laser-assisted skin resurfacing, while maintaining a steadfast commitment to patient safety and outcome optimization.
Surgical Expertise
Dr. Frankel’s surgical repertoire encompasses a broad spectrum of Otolaryngology procedures, ranging from routine functional interventions to highly specialized oncologic resections. His expertise in airway reconstruction, for instance, includes the management of obstructive sleep apnea through precision‑guided uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and the correction of congenital anomalies such as choanal atresia. He is also adept at performing complex skull base surgeries, employing endoscopic techniques to excise benign and malignant tumors while preserving critical neurovascular structures. Each operation reflects his dedication to minimizing morbidity, optimizing functional recovery, and preserving the intricate balance of the head and neck region.
Within the realm of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Frankel has become a sought‑after authority for both aesthetic enhancement and restorative procedures. His rhinoplasty practice, for example, is distinguished by a nuanced understanding of nasal aerodynamics, cartilage grafting, and the aesthetic proportions that define a harmonious profile. He utilizes a combination of open and closed techniques, tailoring his approach to each patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals. In addition to rhinoplasty, he performs comprehensive facial rejuvenation, including deep plane facelifts, mid‑face lifts, and periorbital rejuvenation, employing meticulous dissection planes to achieve natural‑looking results with minimal scarring.
Beyond elective aesthetic procedures, Dr. Frankel excels in reconstructive surgery following oncologic resections, traumatic injuries, or congenital deformities. He leverages advanced microvascular free‑flap techniques, such as the radial forearm flap and the anterolateral thigh flap, to restore complex three‑dimensional defects of the oral cavity, mandible, and facial soft tissues. His reconstructive philosophy prioritizes the restoration of both form and function, ensuring that patients not only regain a pleasing appearance but also retain speech, mastication, and airway integrity. Through a seamless integration of functional and aesthetic considerations, Dr. Frankel delivers outcomes that empower patients to resume their daily lives with confidence and comfort.
Commitment to Patient Safety
Dr. Jonathan Frankel’s unwavering dedication to patient safety is reinforced by his active membership in the American Academy of Otolaryngology‑Head and Neck Surgery (AAO‑HNS), an organization that promotes the highest standards of clinical practice, research, and education. Through AAO‑HNS, he participates in ongoing peer‑reviewed continuing medical education, stays abreast of evolving safety protocols, and contributes to guideline development that shapes national standards for otolaryngologic care. His involvement ensures that every procedure he performs is guided by the most current evidence‑based practices, from perioperative antibiotic stewardship to meticulous intra‑operative monitoring of vital parameters.
In addition to his otolaryngology affiliation, Dr. Frankel is a distinguished member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), an elite body that emphasizes ethical practice, patient‑centered outcomes, and advanced surgical techniques. Within AAFPRS, he has served on committees focused on surgical safety initiatives, including the development of standardized checklists for facial plastic procedures and the promotion of patient‑reported outcome measures that capture both functional and aesthetic satisfaction. His leadership in these initiatives underscores his commitment to a culture of safety that extends beyond his own practice to the broader surgical community.
The recognition of Dr. Frankel’s excellence in patient safety and surgical outcomes was publicly affirmed when he received the Cleveland Medical Awards’ “Best Facial Plastic Surgeon” honor in 2022. This accolade, determined by a rigorous evaluation of clinical performance, patient satisfaction scores, and peer review, highlighted his consistent ability to deliver superior results while maintaining an uncompromising focus on safety. The award also reflected his investment in state‑of‑the‑art operating facilities, where he employs cutting‑edge anesthesia protocols, real‑time intra‑operative imaging, and comprehensive postoperative monitoring to mitigate complications and accelerate recovery. Through these layered safeguards, Dr. Frankel ensures that each patient’s journey—from consultation to convalescence—is marked by the highest degree of care, transparency, and trust.
