Dr. John B. Hijjawi’s philosophy is rooted in a profound respect for the individuality of each patient, a conviction that the art of plastic surgery must be guided by both scientific rigor and aesthetic sensitivity. From his earliest days in medical school, he recognized that the human body is not merely a collection of tissues but a narrative canvas that tells a story of identity, confidence, and personal evolution. This belief drives his meticulous pre‑operative consultations, where he spends extensive time listening to patients’ goals, concerns, and expectations, ensuring that every surgical plan is customized to reflect the unique contours of the individual’s life journey. Dr. Hijjawi insists that a successful outcome is measured not only by the technical precision of the procedure but also by the emotional resonance it creates for the patient.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Hijjawi champions an integrative approach that balances surgical innovation with holistic patient care. He regularly collaborates with dermatologists, psychologists, and nutrition specialists to construct multidimensional treatment pathways that address skin health, mental well‑being, and overall vitality. This interdisciplinary mindset has cultivated a practice culture where patients feel supported at every stage—from pre‑operative preparation through postoperative recovery and long‑term maintenance. By fostering an environment of transparency and empathy, Dr. Hijjawi helps patients navigate the often complex emotional terrain associated with aesthetic transformation, thereby reinforcing his reputation as a surgeon who truly cares about the person behind the procedure.
Innovation, integrity, and education form the triad of values that underpin Dr. Hijjawi’s approach to plastic surgery. He is an avid proponent of continuous learning, regularly attending international conferences and contributing to peer‑reviewed journals to stay at the forefront of emerging techniques. Simultaneously, he remains deeply committed to ethical practice, adhering strictly to evidence‑based protocols and ensuring that every recommendation aligns with the patient’s best interests rather than market trends. This unwavering dedication to principled, patient‑centered care has positioned Dr. Hijjawi as a trusted authority in the field, attracting patients from across the country who seek both aesthetic excellence and compassionate stewardship.
Recognized medical specialties.
Dr. Hijjawi’s academic foundation was forged at the Ghent University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, where he earned his medical degree in 2007. During his tenure at Ghent, he distinguished himself through a combination of scholarly excellence and hands‑on clinical exposure, excelling in courses ranging from anatomy and histology to complex reconstructive surgery. The rigorous curriculum emphasized both theoretical knowledge and practical skill, allowing him to master the delicate balance between surgical precision and the nuanced understanding of tissue dynamics—a balance that would become the cornerstone of his later practice.
Following his graduation, Dr. Hijjawi pursued a fellowship in Microsurgery and Breast Reconstruction, a subspecialty that demands exceptional dexterity, an intimate knowledge of vascular anatomy, and the ability to orchestrate intricate flap procedures. This fellowship, completed at a leading European center, refined his expertise in autologous tissue transfer, microsurgical anastomosis, and the management of postoperative complications. The experience not only sharpened his technical capabilities but also deepened his appreciation for the profound impact that reconstructive surgery can have on a patient’s quality of life, particularly for those recovering from mastectomy or traumatic injuries.
Seeking to broaden his perspective and integrate cutting‑edge techniques, Dr. Hijjawi subsequently joined the prestigious Mayo Clinic’s Plastic Surgery Fellowship program. Although the exact year of his tenure remains undisclosed, his time at Mayo was characterized by immersion in a high‑volume, multidisciplinary environment where he worked alongside world‑renowned surgeons and researchers. At Mayo, he honed his proficiency in aesthetic breast surgery, facial rejuvenation, and complex craniofacial reconstruction, while also participating in pioneering clinical trials that explored novel biomaterials and regenerative strategies. This period cemented his reputation as a surgeon capable of translating scientific advances into safe, reliable, and aesthetically superior outcomes for his patients.
Dr. Hijjawi’s surgical repertoire is anchored by a deep specialization in breast reconstruction, a field that blends oncologic awareness with artistic reconstruction. He employs a wide array of techniques—including the DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap, TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous) flap, and implant‑based reconstruction—to tailor the optimal solution for each patient’s anatomy and oncologic history. His meticulous attention to vascular preservation and flap inset ensures robust perfusion, minimizing the risk of necrosis and expediting postoperative recovery. Moreover, his collaborative approach with oncologic surgeons guarantees seamless coordination of timing, radiation considerations, and aesthetic goals, thereby delivering results that restore both form and confidence.
In the realm of aesthetic breast surgery, Dr. Hijjawi is celebrated for his ability to harmonize proportion, symmetry, and naturalness. Whether performing augmentation, reduction, mastopexy, or a combination thereof, he utilizes state‑of‑the‑art implants, custom‑shaped silicone devices, and advanced tissue‑preserving techniques to achieve outcomes that appear effortless yet are meticulously engineered. His pre‑operative imaging protocols, which include three‑dimensional simulation and precise measurements, empower patients to visualize their future results, fostering informed decision‑making and heightened satisfaction. The surgeon’s dedication to preserving nipple‑areolar complex sensation and minimizing scarring further underscores his commitment to delivering results that are both beautiful and functionally sound.
Beyond breast-focused procedures, Dr. Hijjawi’s expertise spans the full spectrum of plastic surgery, encompassing facial rejuvenation, body contouring, and reconstructive microsurgery. He is adept at performing facelifts, rhinoplasties, and eyelid surgeries that respect the natural aging process while delivering subtle, lasting enhancements. His body contouring work—ranging from abdominoplasty to thigh lifts—incorporates refined tension‑free suturing and progressive tension sutures to reduce seroma formation and improve scar quality. In complex microsurgical reconstructions, he leverages his fellowship training to execute free‑flap transfers with precision, restoring form and function in patients who have suffered severe trauma or congenital deformities. This comprehensive skill set positions Dr. Hijjawi as a versatile surgeon capable of addressing the most intricate aesthetic and reconstructive challenges.
Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Hijjawi’s practice, a principle reinforced by his active involvement with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This affiliation also provides him with a platform to contribute to policy development and advocacy efforts aimed at elevating the overall quality of care within the specialty.
Equally important is Dr. Hijjawi’s certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), a testament to his mastery of both the scientific and artistic dimensions of plastic surgery. The ABPS certification process involves a comprehensive evaluation of his knowledge base, operative experience, and ethical practice, including a rigorous oral and written examination. Maintaining this certification requires ongoing self‑assessment, participation in continuing medical education, and adherence to a strict code of professional conduct.
