Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Butterfield earned her medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she distinguished herself as a top performer in both the basic sciences and clinical rotations. During her undergraduate years, she pursued a dual major in biomedical engineering and psychology, a combination that cultivated her analytical rigor and deepened her appreciation for the psychosocial dimensions of patient care. At the University of Colorado, she was selected for the Honors Program, a competitive track that offered early exposure to cutting‑edge research, surgical simulations, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her thesis, which explored the impact of three‑dimensional imaging on pre‑operative planning in facial reconstruction, earned the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research and foreshadowed her later innovations in surgical visualization.

Following medical school, Dr. Butterfield completed an intensive residency in plastic surgery at the University of Colorado’s Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a program renowned for its comprehensive curriculum and high volume of complex cases. The residency spanned seven years, integrating rigorous operative experience with subspecialty rotations in craniofacial surgery, hand reconstruction, microsurgery, and aesthetic procedures. During this period, she performed over 1,200 surgeries, ranging from cleft palate repairs to high‑definition facial rejuvenation, and consistently received commendations for her precision, adaptability, and leadership in the operating room. Her mentors frequently highlighted her ability to remain calm under pressure, a trait that proved indispensable during prolonged microsurgical cases that demanded meticulous attention to vascular anastomoses.

In addition to her core training, Dr. Butterfield pursued fellowship opportunities that refined her expertise in both reconstructive and cosmetic domains. She spent a year at the prestigious Mayo Clinic, focusing on complex breast reconstruction and oncoplastic techniques, where she contributed to a multi‑institutional study on the long‑term outcomes of autologous tissue flaps. Simultaneously, she completed a cosmetic surgery fellowship at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, immersing herself in the latest minimally invasive technologies, such as radiofrequency skin tightening and injectable volumizers. This dual focus equipped her with a rare blend of skills that enable her to seamlessly transition between restorative procedures and aesthetic enhancements, ensuring that every patient receives a comprehensive, evidence‑based treatment plan.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Butterfield’s surgical repertoire is anchored in a mastery of plastic surgery principles, with a particular emphasis on reconstructive surgery for trauma, oncologic defects, and congenital anomalies. Her work in reconstructive microsurgery has earned her recognition for pioneering techniques that maximize tissue viability while minimizing donor‑site morbidity. One of her signature procedures involves the use of perforator flaps for lower extremity reconstruction, a method that preserves muscle function and accelerates postoperative rehabilitation. By integrating pre‑operative three‑dimensional modeling and intra‑operative indocyanine green angiography, she achieves superior flap perfusion monitoring, dramatically reducing the incidence of postoperative complications.

In the realm of cosmetic surgery, Dr. Butterfield is celebrated for her nuanced approach to facial rejuvenation, body contouring, and breast aesthetics. She employs a customized blend of surgical and non‑surgical modalities, tailoring each treatment to the patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals. For example, her “layered rejuvenation” protocol combines deep plane facelifts, fat grafting, and strategic use of neuromodulators to achieve natural, long‑lasting results that respect the patient’s intrinsic facial harmony. Her expertise in body contouring extends to advanced abdominoplasty techniques, such as the lipo‑abdominoplasty hybrid, which simultaneously addresses excess skin, adipose deposits, and muscular laxity, delivering a smoother, more defined silhouette with reduced recovery time.

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Butterfield contributes to the academic community through peer‑reviewed publications and conference presentations that disseminate her innovative methods. She has authored chapters on microsurgical flap design in leading surgical textbooks and regularly serves on editorial boards for prestigious journals in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Her research interests include the development of bio‑engineered scaffolds for soft tissue regeneration and the application of augmented reality in surgical navigation. By bridging clinical practice with scientific inquiry, she continuously pushes the boundaries of what is possible in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, ensuring that her patients benefit from the most advanced, evidence‑based techniques available.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Dr. Butterfield’s dedication to patient safety is reflected in her active involvement with professional societies that set the highest standards for clinical practice. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), she adheres to the organization’s rigorous ethical guidelines, participates in ongoing safety audits, and contributes to the development of consensus statements on peri‑operative care. Her leadership role within the Colorado Plastic Surgery Society further amplifies her influence, as she spearheads statewide initiatives aimed at enhancing surgical outcomes, reducing infection rates, and promoting transparent patient education. In 2022, her unwavering commitment to excellence was recognized with the Best Plastic Surgeon Award, a distinction bestowed by her peers for exemplary clinical performance, innovative technique, and compassionate patient interaction.

In 2021, Dr. Butterfield was honored as a Top Doctor in Glenwood Springs, a testament to her reputation for delivering safe, effective, and personalized care. This accolade was based on a comprehensive evaluation of patient satisfaction scores, complication metrics, and peer reviews, underscoring her consistent ability to exceed the most stringent benchmarks of safety and quality. She maintains an extensive, evidence‑based protocol that incorporates pre‑operative risk stratification, intra‑operative monitoring, and postoperative follow‑up, all of which are designed to minimize adverse events and expedite recovery. Her practice utilizes state‑of‑the‑art operating suites equipped with real‑time imaging, sterile processing systems, and emergency preparedness measures, ensuring that every procedure is conducted in an environment that prioritizes patient well‑being above all else.

Dr. Butterfield also invests heavily in patient education, recognizing that informed patients are empowered to participate actively in their own safety. She conducts detailed pre‑operative workshops that cover anesthesia considerations, wound care, nutrition, and activity restrictions, providing written and digital resources that patients can reference throughout their recovery journey. Moreover, she employs a rigorous consent process that outlines potential risks, benefits, and alternatives, fostering an atmosphere of transparency and trust. By integrating these comprehensive safety strategies into every facet of her practice, she not only safeguards her patients but also sets a benchmark for the entire surgical community.
