Dr. Jeffrey Thaxton - Plastic Surgeon in Charleston, WV

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Jeffrey Thaxton’s academic journey began with a deep fascination for the molecular underpinnings of human biology, which led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Marshall University. Graduating Cum Laude in 1988, he distinguished himself not only through academic excellence but also through a series of research projects that explored catalytic processes and their potential applications in biomedical contexts. His undergraduate thesis, which investigated the role of metal‑based catalysts in tissue regeneration, earned him recognition from the university’s Department of Chemistry and sparked an enduring interest in the translational potential of basic science. This foundation in rigorous analytical thinking equipped Dr. Thaxton with a problem‑solving mindset that would later prove invaluable in the complex decision‑making required for surgical planning and execution.

Following his undergraduate success, Dr. Thaxton matriculated at the Marshall University School of Medicine, where he earned his M.D. with honors. During his medical school years, he was selected for the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, reflecting his commitment to academic excellence, clinical competence, and service to humanity. His clinical rotations were marked by a particular affinity for surgical specialties, with his third‑year clerkship in general surgery igniting a passion for operative techniques and reconstructive challenges. He completed a capstone research project on postoperative wound healing, which was later published in a leading surgical journal, further cementing his reputation as a scholar capable of bridging the gap between laboratory research and bedside application.

After medical school, Dr. Thaxton embarked on a demanding residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at a nationally recognized academic medical center. The residency, spanning six intensive years, provided him with comprehensive exposure to the full spectrum of plastic surgery—from microsurgical free‑tissue transfer and complex craniofacial reconstruction to aesthetic facial rejuvenation and body contouring. Throughout his training, he was mentored by several pioneers in the field, gaining hands‑on experience with cutting‑edge techniques such as perforator flap design, laser‑assisted scar revision, and autologous fat grafting. His dedication to mastering these sophisticated procedures earned him multiple “Resident of the Year” awards and a fellowship invitation to further refine his expertise in breast reconstruction, a subspecialty that would become a hallmark of his later practice.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Thaxton’s surgical repertoire is anchored by a distinguished expertise in breast reconstruction, a discipline that demands both technical precision and an empathetic understanding of the profound emotional journey undertaken by patients undergoing mastectomy. Leveraging his extensive training in microsurgical techniques, he routinely performs autologous tissue transfers such as the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap, which offers superior aesthetic outcomes with reduced donor‑site morbidity. His nuanced approach incorporates pre‑operative three‑dimensional imaging to tailor flap design, ensuring optimal symmetry and natural contour. Over the past decade, Dr. Thaxton has successfully reconstructed over 1,200 breasts, a testament to his proficiency and the trust placed in him by patients and referring oncologic surgeons alike. His contributions to the field have been recognized through several invited lectures at national conferences, where he shares insights on minimizing complications, enhancing flap perfusion, and integrating adjunctive therapies such as radiation‑compatible reconstruction protocols.

In the broader realm of plastic surgery, Dr. Thaxton has cultivated a reputation for excellence across a wide variety of reconstructive challenges. He is adept at managing complex traumatic injuries, employing a combination of flap reconstruction, skeletal stabilization, and functional restoration to return patients to pre‑injury levels of activity. His skill set includes the management of congenital deformities such as craniofacial syndromes, where he utilizes multidisciplinary collaboration with neurosurgeons, orthodontists, and speech therapists to achieve holistic outcomes. Moreover, Dr. Thaxton has been instrumental in pioneering protocols for scar management, employing laser resurfacing, silicone therapy, and novel biologic dressings to mitigate hypertrophic scarring and improve functional mobility. His meticulous attention to detail, combined with an artistic eye for aesthetic balance, has positioned him as a surgeon who consistently delivers results that are both technically sound and visually harmonious.

Beyond reconstructive work, Dr. Thaxton is equally celebrated for his aesthetic surgery practice, which encompasses facial rejuvenation, body contouring, and minimally invasive procedures. He employs a customized, patient‑specific approach that integrates the latest advances in injectable fillers, neurotoxins, and energy‑based devices to achieve natural‑looking enhancements. For instance, his rhinoplasty technique blends traditional open methods with contemporary preservation strategies, preserving the nasal dorsum’s structural integrity while refining shape and proportion. In body contouring, he utilizes high‑definition liposuction and muscle‑accentuating lipofilling to sculpt the abdomen, flanks, and thighs, delivering results that align with the patient’s personal aesthetic goals. Dr. Thaxton’s commitment to safety, aesthetic harmony, and individualized care has earned him a loyal following of patients who travel from across the region to benefit from his expertise.

As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), he adheres to the organization’s rigorous standards for operative excellence, continuous education, and ethical practice. Within ASPS, Dr. Thaxton has served on the Patient Safety Committee, where he helped develop guidelines for peri‑operative infection control, surgical site monitoring, and postoperative pain management. His contributions have been instrumental in shaping protocols that reduce complication rates and promote rapid recovery, ensuring that patients receive care that is both safe and effective.

In addition to his ASPS affiliation, Dr. Thaxton is an active participant in The Aesthetic Society, where he collaborates with fellow aesthetic surgeons to advance best practices in cosmetic procedures. Through this platform, he has championed initiatives that emphasize the importance of evidence‑based patient selection, thorough pre‑operative counseling, and the use of validated outcome measures. His advocacy for transparency and patient education has led to the implementation of comprehensive consent processes that clearly delineate potential risks, benefits, and alternatives, thereby fostering informed decision‑making. These efforts have not only elevated the standard of care within his own practice but have also contributed to the broader cultural shift toward heightened patient awareness and empowerment across the specialty.

Recognition of Dr. Thaxton’s dedication to safety and excellence is evident in the accolades he has received from his peers and professional organizations. In 2020, the West Virginia Medical Society honored him with the Best Plastic Surgeon Award, acknowledging his superior surgical outcomes, innovative techniques, and commitment to community health. Two years earlier, the West Virginia Hospital Association bestowed upon him the Outstanding Clinical Excellence award, citing his exemplary patient satisfaction scores, low complication rates, and leadership in quality improvement initiatives. These honors underscore Dr. Thaxton’s unwavering pursuit of the highest standards in patient care, reinforcing his reputation as a surgeon who places safety at the forefront of every clinical decision.
