Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Jeanne A. Scanland earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine, a program celebrated for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on clinical excellence. During her medical school tenure, she distinguished herself as a top performer in both basic sciences and clinical rotations, earning multiple honors for research in wound healing and reconstructive techniques. Her commitment to academic excellence was reflected in her active participation in the university’s research symposium, where she presented a pioneering study on the role of extracellular matrix scaffolds in facial tissue regeneration—a study that later informed best practices in reconstructive surgery.

Following medical school, Dr. Scanland pursued a demanding residency in general surgery, where she honed her operative dexterity and deepened her understanding of systemic disease management. Her residency experience was marked by a series of complex abdominal and thoracic cases that demanded precise anatomical knowledge and decisive intra‑operative judgment. She leveraged this foundation to transition seamlessly into a highly competitive plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship, where she refined her expertise in microsurgical techniques, aesthetic facial procedures, and breast reconstruction. Throughout her fellowship, she was mentored by renowned pioneers in the field, gaining exposure to high‑volume reconstructive centers and participating in multidisciplinary tumor boards that emphasized collaborative patient care.

Throughout her training, Dr. Scanland consistently pursued additional certifications and fellowships to broaden her skill set. She completed a specialized microvascular surgery certification, mastering the art of free‑flap transfer for complex soft‑tissue defects. She also participated in a cadaveric workshop series focused on facial skeletal reconstruction, which enhanced her ability to restore both form and function in patients with traumatic injuries. Her academic journey culminated in a series of peer‑reviewed publications that explored innovative methods for scar revision and the integration of autologous fat grafting in breast reconstruction, solidifying her reputation as a thought leader committed to advancing the field of plastic surgery.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Scanland’s surgical repertoire encompasses a broad spectrum of plastic and reconstructive procedures, each executed with an unwavering commitment to precision and aesthetic harmony. In the realm of aesthetic surgery, she offers comprehensive facial rejuvenation—including facelifts, brow lifts, and eyelid surgery—leveraging advanced techniques such as deep plane dissection and tension‑free suturing to achieve natural, long‑lasting results. Her meticulous approach to rhinoplasty combines structural reinforcement with subtle contouring, producing outcomes that respect the patient’s unique facial proportions while enhancing functional airflow. Moreover, she is celebrated for her expertise in breast aesthetic surgery, providing patients with customized augmentation, lift, and reduction options that prioritize symmetry, implant selection, and scar placement.

On the reconstructive front, Dr. Scanland excels in complex wound management, microsurgical free‑flap reconstruction, and oncologic breast reconstruction. Her proficiency in harvesting and shaping perforator flaps—such as the profunda femoris artery perforator (PAP) and the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP)—allows her to restore extensive soft‑tissue defects with minimal donor‑site morbidity. In breast cancer patients, she orchestrates a multidisciplinary approach that integrates mastectomy, immediate reconstruction, and adjuvant therapies, ensuring that oncologic safety is never compromised by aesthetic considerations. Her dedication to functional restoration is evident in her work with hand trauma patients, where she performs intricate tendon repairs, nerve grafts, and skin grafts to restore dexterity and reduce disability.

Beyond standard procedures, Dr. Scanland is a pioneer in hybrid techniques that blend aesthetic and reconstructive principles. She routinely utilizes autologous fat grafting augmented with platelet‑rich plasma to improve tissue quality, reduce scarring, and promote regenerative healing. In facial reconstruction after trauma or tumor excision, she combines skeletal fixation with soft‑tissue augmentation to achieve seamless integration of bone and skin, delivering outcomes that are both structurally sound and cosmetically refined. Her surgical philosophy emphasizes minimally invasive approaches whenever feasible, employing endoscopic instruments and ultrasonic devices to reduce operative time, blood loss, and postoperative discomfort, thereby enhancing the overall patient experience.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Scanland’s practice, a principle reinforced by her active involvement with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). As a board‑certified member of both societies, she adheres to stringent standards of care, participates in ongoing peer‑review processes, and contributes to national safety initiatives that aim to reduce complications across the specialty. Her commitment is further demonstrated through regular attendance at ASPS’s annual safety symposiums, where she collaborates with leading experts to refine protocols for infection control, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, and peri‑operative analgesia.

Dr. Scanland’s dedication to excellence has been recognized through numerous accolades, including the prestigious Top Plastic Surgeon Award from the State Medical Association and the Excellence in Aesthetic Surgery Award. These honors reflect her consistent delivery of superior outcomes, her adherence to evidence‑based practice, and her unwavering focus on patient satisfaction. The awards also underscore her role as a mentor and educator, as she frequently conducts workshops for resident physicians and fellows, emphasizing the importance of safety checklists, meticulous documentation, and transparent communication with patients and their families.

In her clinic, safety protocols are embedded into every step of the patient journey. From pre‑operative screening—including comprehensive medical histories, laboratory work, and risk stratification—to intra‑operative monitoring with advanced anesthesia techniques, Dr. Scanland ensures that each procedure is performed within a controlled environment that minimizes risk. Post‑operative care includes a structured pathway that incorporates early mobilization, wound surveillance, and patient education on signs of infection or vascular compromise. Her practice also utilizes an electronic health record system that flags potential drug interactions and alerts the surgical team to any deviations from standard postoperative orders, thereby creating a safety net that protects patients throughout their recovery.
