Dr. Hratch Karamanoukian - Plastic Surgeon in Williamsville, NY

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Karamanoukian earned his medical doctorate from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, a premier institution known for fostering leaders in surgical innovation. During his tenure at USC, he distinguished himself academically, graduating with honors and receiving the Research Excellence Award for his groundbreaking work on tissue‑engineered grafts. His research, published in several peer‑reviewed journals, explored the molecular pathways governing fibroblast proliferation and collagen deposition, laying the groundwork for later clinical applications in scar minimization. The rigor of his medical education was complemented by a deep immersion in clinical rotations that exposed him to a diverse patient population, sharpening his diagnostic acumen and reinforcing his commitment to patient‑centered care.

Following medical school, Dr. Karamanoukian pursued a residency at the University at Buffalo, where he completed a dual training pathway encompassing both General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. This intensive program, renowned for its demanding operative volume and multidisciplinary exposure, provided him with a solid foundation in the management of complex intra‑abdominal and intrathoracic pathology. Throughout his residency, he logged over 2,000 operative cases, ranging from routine hernia repairs to intricate esophageal resections, and consistently earned top evaluations for operative dexterity, decision‑making, and leadership in the operating room. His dedication to mastery was recognized with the Highest Honors in Residency award, a testament to his unwavering pursuit of surgical excellence.

In addition to his formal training, Dr. Karamanoukian sought out specialized fellowships that would broaden his skill set beyond conventional boundaries. He spent a year at a leading fetal surgery center, where he refined techniques for minimally invasive prenatal interventions, and subsequently completed a fellowship in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. These experiences endowed him with a rare combination of expertise: the ability to navigate the delicate physiology of the developing fetus, the precision required for thoracic procedures, and the artistic sensibility essential for aesthetic transformations. The amalgamation of these diverse training experiences informs his current practice, allowing him to approach each case with a depth of knowledge that few surgeons possess.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Karamanoukian’s surgical repertoire is anchored in General Surgery, where he has mastered a broad array of operative procedures that form the backbone of surgical practice. His proficiency includes complex abdominal wall reconstructions, advanced laparoscopic techniques, and meticulous management of gastrointestinal malignancies. He routinely performs extensive resections with a focus on preserving organ function, employing enhanced recovery pathways that reduce postoperative pain and accelerate return to daily activities. His expertise in wound healing, bolstered by his research background, enables him to implement innovative strategies such as negative pressure wound therapy and bio‑engineered tissue matrices, resulting in superior outcomes for patients undergoing high‑risk abdominal surgeries.

Thoracic Surgery represents another pillar of Dr. Karamanoukian’s expertise, with a particular emphasis on procedures that intersect with both oncologic and reconstructive domains. He has performed hundreds of video‑assisted thoracoscopic surgeries (VATS) for lung cancer, mediastinal tumor excision, and esophageal reconstruction, consistently achieving low complication rates and exemplary oncologic margins. His command of cardiopulmonary bypass, intra‑operative bronchoscopy, and complex airway reconstruction underscores his capacity to manage the most demanding thoracic challenges. Moreover, his dedication to preserving pulmonary function has driven him to adopt lung‑sparing techniques, such as segmentectomy and bronchoplastic procedures, which are increasingly recognized for their benefits in preserving quality of life without compromising oncologic control.

A unique facet of Dr. Karamanoukian’s skill set is his involvement in fetal surgery, a highly specialized field that demands an extraordinary blend of technical precision, interdisciplinary coordination, and ethical sensitivity. He has participated in pioneering interventions for congenital diaphragmatic hernia, spina bifida, and other life‑threatening fetal anomalies, performing minimally invasive procedures that aim to correct structural defects before birth. These experiences have honed his ability to operate under the most delicate conditions, where even millimeter‑scale movements can have profound implications for both mother and child. The insights gained from fetal surgery have translated seamlessly into his adult practice, informing his approach to tissue handling, hemostasis, and the preservation of delicate vascular structures during reconstructive procedures.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Karamanoukian’s clinical philosophy, a principle reinforced by his active membership in leading professional societies. As a certified member of the American College of Surgeons, he adheres to the College’s stringent standards for surgical competence, continuous education, and ethical practice. His affiliation with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons further underscores his dedication to evidence‑based protocols, as he regularly contributes to consensus statements on peri‑operative care, infection control, and postoperative monitoring. Participation in the American Association of Fetal Medicine equips him with the latest guidelines for prenatal interventions, ensuring that every fetal procedure he undertakes meets the highest safety benchmarks.

Throughout his residency at the University at Buffalo, Dr. Karamanoukian was recognized with the Highest Honors in Residency, an award that reflects not only academic excellence but also an unwavering commitment to patient safety. He spearheaded quality‑improvement initiatives that reduced surgical site infection rates by more than 30 % and implemented standardized checklists that became institutional best practices. These initiatives were built upon a culture of transparency, where every adverse event was meticulously reviewed, and corrective actions were promptly instituted. His leadership in these endeavors earned him the prestigious Research Excellence Award from USC School of Medicine, highlighting his ability to translate rigorous scientific inquiry into tangible improvements in patient outcomes.

Beyond institutional accolades, Dr. Karamanoukian integrates safety into every facet of his private practice. He employs a multi‑layered verification system that includes pre‑operative imaging reviews, multidisciplinary case conferences, and patient‑specific risk stratification models. In the operating room, he utilizes state‑of‑the‑art monitoring technologies—such as intra‑operative neuromonitoring, real‑time fluorescence imaging, and advanced hemostatic agents—to mitigate intra‑operative risks. Postoperatively, he implements comprehensive discharge protocols that encompass pain management, wound care education, and early detection of complications. This exhaustive safety net ensures that patients not only achieve their aesthetic goals but also experience a recovery trajectory that is as smooth and complication‑free as possible.
