Read about this doctor's medical background and experience.
Dr. Harris R. Sterman approaches the art and science of plastic surgery with a philosophy that blends meticulous craftsmanship, evidence‑based medicine, and an unwavering commitment to individualized patient care. From his earliest days observing the transformative power of reconstructive procedures, he recognized that each patient arrives with a unique constellation of aesthetic goals, functional needs, and personal narratives. This insight has driven him to develop a practice model that prioritizes thorough consultation, transparent communication, and a collaborative decision‑making process. He believes that the surgeon’s role is not merely to alter tissue but to empower patients to regain confidence, improve quality of life, and achieve outcomes that reflect both their inner aspirations and external realities. By integrating a holistic perspective that includes psychological readiness, lifestyle factors, and long‑term maintenance, Dr. Sterman ensures that every operative plan is anchored in the patient’s broader life context.
Central to Dr. Sterman’s approach is the principle of “natural harmony,” a concept that emphasizes the preservation of innate anatomical landmarks while subtly enhancing form and function. He rejects one‑size‑fits‑all templates and instead tailors each procedure to the patient’s facial proportions, skin quality, and personal aesthetic preferences. This philosophy is evident in his meticulous pre‑operative planning, which often involves three‑dimensional imaging, computer‑assisted simulations, and interdisciplinary consultations with dermatologists, orthodontists, and physical therapists. By leveraging advanced technology alongside his refined surgical skill set, Dr. Sterman can predict postoperative outcomes with remarkable accuracy, thereby setting realistic expectations and minimizing the risk of postoperative dissatisfaction.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Sterman is an advocate for continuous learning and professional mentorship. He regularly hosts seminars and workshops for emerging surgeons, emphasizing the importance of ethical practice, patient safety, and artistic integrity. His dedication to education extends to his patients as well; he provides comprehensive postoperative care instructions, personalized follow‑up schedules, and access to a supportive care team that monitors healing progress and addresses concerns promptly. This comprehensive, patient‑centric model has cultivated a reputation for excellence that resonates not only within New Jersey but across the broader region, attracting individuals who seek a surgeon whose values align with their own desire for authentic, lasting transformation.
Recognized medical specialties.
Dr. Sterman earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the State University of New York, where he distinguished himself as a scholar with a deep curiosity for cellular biology, anatomy, and the physiological mechanisms underlying tissue regeneration. His undergraduate research focused on the molecular pathways of wound healing, an early indicator of his future dedication to reconstructive surgery. During his time at SUNY, he participated in multiple laboratory projects, presented findings at national conferences, and contributed to peer‑reviewed publications that explored the interplay between growth factors and scar formation. This foundation in rigorous scientific inquiry not only honed his analytical abilities but also instilled a lifelong commitment to evidence‑driven practice.
Following his undergraduate degree, Dr. Sterman pursued a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) at the State University of New York School of Medicine, where he graduated with honors and earned multiple accolades for clinical excellence. His medical school curriculum emphasized a balance between basic science and clinical rotations, allowing him to develop a comprehensive understanding of human physiology, pathophysiology, and the nuanced art of patient interaction. During his third‑year clerkships, he rotated through surgical services, where his aptitude for intricate procedural work and his compassionate bedside manner earned him commendations from attending physicians. He also completed a research fellowship in regenerative medicine, investigating the use of stem cell therapy in complex wound reconstruction, an experience that would later inform his innovative approaches to reconstructive surgery.
After medical school, Dr. Sterman entered a highly competitive residency program in general surgery, where he refined his operative techniques, decision‑making acuity, and leadership skills in high‑stress environments. His residency included rotations at tertiary care centers that exposed him to a spectrum of complex abdominal, thoracic, and trauma cases, each demanding precise anatomical knowledge and swift, decisive action. Recognizing his passion for restoration of form and function, he pursued a dedicated fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery, completing rigorous training at a nationally recognized institution. This fellowship provided intensive exposure to microsurgical techniques, craniofacial reconstruction, aesthetic procedures, and the management of congenital anomalies. Throughout his training, Dr. Sterman consistently achieved top performance metrics, authored multiple scholarly articles, and presented at prestigious conferences, cementing his reputation as a surgeon of exceptional skill and scholarly dedication.
Dr. Sterman’s surgical repertoire encompasses the full spectrum of plastic surgery, ranging from delicate aesthetic refinements to complex reconstructive interventions. In the realm of aesthetic surgery, he is renowned for his mastery of facial rejuvenation, including rhytidectomy (facelift), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and facial fat grafting, each performed with an emphasis on preserving natural expression and minimizing visible scarring. His approach integrates advanced technologies such as tension‑free suturing, ultrasonic liposuction, and laser‑assisted skin resurfacing, allowing him to achieve results that are both subtle and enduring. Patients consistently praise his ability to harmonize facial features, restore youthful contours, and maintain the uniqueness of each individual’s appearance.
Equally distinguished is Dr. Sterman’s expertise in reconstructive surgery, where he tackles some of the most challenging cases in the field. He has performed hundreds of microsurgical free‑tissue transfers, repairing severe traumatic injuries, oncologic defects, and congenital malformations with a focus on restoring both form and function. His proficiency in flap design, vascular anastomosis, and postoperative monitoring has resulted in high flap survival rates and reduced complication frequencies. Dr. Sterman also excels in breast reconstruction, employing both implant‑based and autologous techniques such as the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap, thereby offering patients personalized options that align with their oncologic treatment plans and aesthetic preferences.
Beyond the operating theater, Dr. Sterman contributes to the evolution of surgical practice through ongoing research and innovation. He has authored numerous peer‑reviewed articles on topics such as the optimization of scar remodeling, the application of regenerative biomaterials in wound healing, and the refinement of three‑dimensional imaging for pre‑operative planning. His work has been cited in leading journals and presented at international symposiums, influencing best practices worldwide. Moreover, he collaborates with biomedical engineers to develop custom‑crafted implants and patient‑specific surgical guides, bridging the gap between cutting‑edge technology and clinical application. This commitment to advancement ensures that his patients benefit from the most current, scientifically validated techniques available.
Patient safety stands as the cornerstone of Dr. Sterman’s practice, a principle reinforced by his active involvement with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). As a member of this premier professional organization, he adheres to stringent ethical standards, participates in continuing medical education programs, and contributes to the development of safety guidelines that shape the field nationally. His affiliation with the American Board of Plastic Surgery further underscores his dedication to maintaining the highest level of competency, as he undergoes periodic recertification processes that evaluate both his clinical outcomes and his commitment to lifelong learning.
