Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Grace Kim Austin’s academic foundation was forged at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree with honors. During her time at UT Southwestern, she distinguished herself not only through academic excellence but also through early research involvement, contributing to peer‑reviewed publications on tissue engineering and facial nerve regeneration. Her commitment to scholarly inquiry earned her multiple research awards, reinforcing a lifelong dedication to evidence‑based practice. The rigorous curriculum, combined with a demanding clinical rotation schedule, equipped Dr. Austin with a profound understanding of anatomy, physiology, and the nuanced interplay between form and function that would later become the hallmark of her surgical practice.

Following medical school, Dr. Austin pursued a residency in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), a program renowned for its emphasis on both oncologic and reconstructive surgery. Over the course of her five‑year residency, she refined her technical dexterity in complex airway reconstructions, thyroid and parathyroid surgeries, and intricate head and neck oncologic procedures. Her exemplary performance was recognized through the UCLA Resident Excellence Award, and she was selected to lead a multidisciplinary tumor board, where she honed her collaborative decision‑making skills. The breadth of experience gained at UCLA laid a solid platform for her subsequent specialization, allowing her to approach facial plastic surgery with a deep appreciation for the underlying structural complexities of the head and neck.

To further specialize, Dr. Austin completed a prestigious fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, an institution synonymous with pioneering surgical innovation. Under the mentorship of world‑leading facial surgeons, she mastered advanced techniques such as microvascular free flap reconstruction, facial nerve reanimation, and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures. Her fellowship research focused on the application of bio‑resorbable scaffolds for facial bone regeneration, culminating in a landmark presentation at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting. The combination of rigorous clinical exposure, cutting‑edge research, and mentorship at Johns Hopkins solidified Dr. Austin’s reputation as a surgeon capable of delivering both functional restoration and aesthetic refinement.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Grace Kim Austin’s surgical repertoire encompasses a comprehensive spectrum of facial plastic surgery, ranging from subtle aesthetic enhancements to complex reconstructive challenges. In the realm of aesthetic facial surgery, she is acclaimed for her nuanced approach to rhinoplasty, where she balances the patient’s desired aesthetic with the preservation of nasal function, employing techniques such as spreader grafts and preservation rhinoplasty to maintain structural integrity. Her expertise extends to facelifts, blepharoplasty, and chin augmentation, where she utilizes three‑dimensional imaging and computer‑assisted planning to achieve natural, harmonious results that respect each patient’s unique facial architecture. By integrating the latest advancements in injectable fillers, neuromodulators, and laser resurfacing, Dr. Austin offers a full continuum of non‑surgical rejuvenation, ensuring that patients have access to the most appropriate level of intervention.

In reconstructive surgery, Dr. Austin’s skill set is equally formidable. She routinely performs intricate facial trauma reconstructions, employing microvascular free tissue transfer to restore both form and function after severe injuries. Her proficiency in facial nerve repair and reanimation allows her to restore expressive movement for patients affected by traumatic or iatrogenic nerve damage, often utilizing nerve grafts, muscle transfers, and innovative neurotization techniques. Moreover, Dr. Austin is adept at managing congenital craniofacial anomalies, such as cleft lip and palate, where she collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate staged repairs that optimize speech, feeding, and aesthetic outcomes. Her reconstructive work is underscored by a deep respect for the delicate balance between structural stability and aesthetic considerations, ensuring that each reconstruction not only repairs but also restores the patient’s sense of self.

Beyond facial procedures, Dr. Austin’s otolaryngology background informs her mastery of head and neck surgery, enabling her to tackle complex oncologic resections, thyroid and parathyroid disease, and airway reconstruction with confidence. She frequently synergizes her otolaryngology expertise with facial plastic techniques, offering patients seamless transitions from tumor excision to immediate reconstructive repair, thereby minimizing the need for multiple surgeries and reducing overall recovery time. Her comprehensive approach, which integrates functional restoration, aesthetic refinement, and meticulous surgical planning, positions her as a uniquely qualified surgeon capable of addressing the most demanding clinical scenarios with precision and compassion.
