Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Henstrom’s academic journey began at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree with honors, distinguishing himself through a blend of scholarly excellence and early clinical immersion. During his medical school tenure, he pursued advanced coursework in craniofacial anatomy, surgical pathology, and biomedical ethics, laying a robust foundation for his future specialization. His commitment to research was evident in multiple peer‑reviewed publications focusing on tissue regeneration and innovative reconstructive techniques, which garnered accolades and set the stage for his subsequent training at premier institutions. The rigorous curriculum, combined with hands‑on cadaveric dissections and interdisciplinary seminars, equipped Dr. Henstrom with a nuanced understanding of both the aesthetic and functional dimensions of facial surgery.

Following medical school, Dr. Henstrom secured a coveted residency position at the Mayo Clinic, where he completed an intensive program in Otolaryngology with a subspecialty focus on Head & Neck Surgery. This residency was characterized by a demanding schedule of operative cases, ranging from complex oncologic resections to delicate laryngeal reconstructions, each demanding precision, adaptability, and a profound grasp of airway dynamics. Throughout his residency, he was mentored by world‑renowned surgeons who emphasized the integration of oncologic safety with aesthetic outcomes, fostering a balanced perspective that would later define his practice. His performance earned him multiple departmental awards, reflecting his technical proficiency, leadership in multidisciplinary tumor boards, and a compassionate bedside manner that resonated with patients and colleagues alike.

To further refine his expertise, Dr. Henstrom pursued a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a program renowned for its focus on innovative techniques and complex facial reconstruction. During this fellowship, he mastered advanced procedures such as free‑flap transfers, facial nerve reanimation, and patient‑specific implant design using computer‑assisted modeling. The fellowship also provided exposure to cutting‑edge research on scar modulation and the use of bio‑active scaffolds for soft‑tissue regeneration. Dr. Henstrom contributed to groundbreaking clinical trials that examined the efficacy of novel biomaterials in facial reconstruction, culminating in multiple first‑author publications that have since influenced surgical protocols worldwide. This comprehensive training trajectory, spanning premier academic institutions and elite surgical programs, solidified his reputation as a surgeon capable of delivering both aesthetic excellence and functional restoration.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Henstrom’s surgical portfolio is anchored in facial plastic surgery, where he leverages his deep anatomical knowledge to perform procedures that harmonize form and function. His expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of aesthetic interventions, from rhinoplasty and facelift to minimally invasive thread lifts and volumizing injections. Each operation is meticulously planned using three‑dimensional imaging and computer‑assisted design, allowing him to visualize postoperative outcomes and tailor interventions to the patient’s unique facial architecture. He is particularly renowned for his ability to achieve natural, symmetrical results in complex nasal reconstructions, where he combines cartilage grafting, structural graft placement, and refined tip refinement techniques. By integrating the principles of aesthetic proportion with surgical precision, Dr. Henstrom consistently delivers outcomes that are both timeless and personalized.

Beyond aesthetic refinements, Dr. Henstrom excels in reconstructive surgery, addressing traumatic injuries, congenital anomalies, and oncologic defects with a restorative mindset. His proficiency in microsurgical free‑flap reconstruction enables the restoration of intricate facial contours and functional structures, such as the oral commissure and eyelid support, following extensive tumor resections or severe trauma. He routinely collaborates with multidisciplinary teams—including maxillofacial surgeons, dermatologists, and speech therapists—to orchestrate comprehensive treatment plans that prioritize both visual outcome and functional recovery. His innovative use of vascularized composite allotransplantation, coupled with meticulous postoperative monitoring protocols, has set new standards for restoring facial integrity in patients who have endured life‑altering injuries.

In the realm of head and neck surgery, Dr. Henstrom’s skill set extends to the management of complex airway pathologies, thyroid and parathyroid disorders, and salivary gland neoplasms. His otolaryngology background equips him with a nuanced understanding of the delicate balance between oncologic clearance and preservation of speech, swallowing, and respiratory function. He employs state‑of‑the‑art intraoperative nerve monitoring, image‑guided navigation, and minimally invasive endoscopic techniques to minimize tissue disruption while maximizing surgical efficacy. Moreover, his expertise in reconstructive otolaryngology includes innovative solutions for laryngeal reconstruction, voice restoration, and facial nerve reanimation, ensuring that patients retain quality of life after extensive head and neck procedures.
