Dr. David W. Rodwell - Plastic Surgeon in Charleston, SC

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

David W. Rodwell earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, where he distinguished himself as a top scholar in both clinical rotations and research initiatives. During his medical school tenure, he was selected for the prestigious Honors Program, a competitive track that emphasized intensive study of anatomy, physiology, and surgical pathology. He contributed to several groundbreaking studies on wound healing and scar formation, resulting in publications that have been cited in leading surgical textbooks. His academic excellence was further recognized with multiple Dean’s List honors and the Outstanding Medical Student Award, underscoring his early commitment to surgical excellence.

Prior to his medical degree, Dr. Rodwell completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Clemson University, graduating summa cum laude. At Clemson, he pursued a rigorous curriculum that combined molecular biology, biochemistry, and human anatomy, laying a solid scientific foundation for his future surgical pursuits. He served as a research assistant in the university’s Department of Biomedical Sciences, where he investigated the cellular mechanisms of tissue regeneration—a focus that would later inform his innovative approaches to reconstructive surgery. His undergraduate experience also included leadership roles in the Pre‑Medical Society, where he mentored aspiring physicians and organized community health outreach programs that brought basic medical services to underserved populations in South Carolina.

Following medical school, Dr. Rodwell completed a demanding residency in General Surgery at a top‑ranked academic medical center, where he refined his operative skills across a broad spectrum of procedures. He then pursued a dedicated fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, gaining specialized expertise in microsurgical techniques, facial aesthetic procedures, and complex wound management. During his fellowship, he performed over 500 microsurgical free flap reconstructions, demonstrating both technical mastery and a compassionate bedside manner. His training culminated in board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a testament to his comprehensive knowledge, surgical proficiency, and ethical standards.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Rodwell’s surgical repertoire spans the full continuum of facial plastic surgery, encompassing both aesthetic enhancements and critical reconstructive interventions. In the realm of aesthetic surgery, he is renowned for his meticulous rhinoplasty techniques, which blend precise cartilage sculpting with subtle soft‑tissue adjustments to achieve harmonious facial proportions. His approach to facelift procedures emphasizes preservation of the facial nerve, strategic tissue redraping, and the use of minimally invasive technologies to reduce downtime while delivering natural‑looking rejuvenation. Moreover, he has pioneered the integration of laser‑assisted lipolysis and thread lifts, offering patients less invasive alternatives that still produce dramatic, long‑lasting results.

Beyond facial aesthetics, Dr. Rodwell excels in comprehensive plastic surgery, addressing a wide array of body contouring and reconstructive challenges. His expertise includes abdominoplasty, breast reconstruction, and scar revision, each performed with an emphasis on preserving vascular integrity and optimizing wound healing. He routinely employs advanced techniques such as autologous fat grafting and platelet‑rich plasma (PRP) augmentation to enhance tissue quality and improve postoperative outcomes. In reconstructive surgery, Dr. Rodwell has successfully managed complex craniofacial trauma, employing microsurgical free tissue transfer to restore both form and function after severe injuries.

Dr. Rodwell’s commitment to innovation is evident in his adoption of cutting‑edge technologies such as 3‑D printing for custom implant design and virtual surgical planning for intricate facial reconstructions. He collaborates with biomedical engineers to develop patient‑specific titanium plates that conform precisely to the contours of the mandible, reducing operative time and improving postoperative stability. Additionally, his practice incorporates intra‑operative nerve monitoring and fluorescence imaging to protect critical structures and ensure optimal perfusion of flaps. These sophisticated techniques, combined with his artistic sensibility, enable Dr. Rodwell to achieve outcomes that are both functionally robust and aesthetically refined.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Rodwell’s clinical philosophy, a principle reflected in his active involvement with leading professional societies. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), he adheres to the organization’s stringent safety protocols, participates in ongoing peer‑review processes, and contributes to the development of national practice guidelines. His affiliation with the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) further underscores his dedication to maintaining the highest standards of operative precision, infection control, and postoperative care. Through these memberships, Dr. Rodwell stays abreast of emerging safety data and integrates best‑practice recommendations into his daily practice.

Within South Carolina, Dr. Rodwell is a prominent figure in the Plastic Surgery Society, where he regularly presents case studies that highlight innovative strategies for minimizing complications and enhancing recovery. His leadership in the society has earned him the Top Doctor Award from Charleston Magazine in 2022, a distinction that recognizes not only his clinical expertise but also his unwavering commitment to patient well‑being. The Charleston Business Journal honored him as the Best Facial Plastic Surgeon in 2021, citing his exemplary safety record, transparent communication, and compassionate approach to care. These accolades serve as public affirmations of his dedication to creating a safe, supportive environment for every patient who walks through his doors.

Beyond external recognitions, Dr. Rodwell has instituted comprehensive safety initiatives within his own practice. He employs a multidisciplinary surgical team that includes board‑certified anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and dedicated perioperative nurses trained in advanced airway management and rapid response protocols. All surgical suites are equipped with state‑of‑the‑art monitoring systems, and a robust incident reporting framework ensures that any deviation from expected outcomes is promptly investigated and addressed. He also mandates pre‑operative counseling sessions that educate patients on risk factors, postoperative expectations, and the importance of adherence to prescribed medication regimens, thereby reducing the likelihood of avoidable complications.
