His scholarly pursuits were complemented by clinical rotations that exposed him to a broad spectrum of surgical disciplines, laying a robust foundation for his eventual specialization in plastic surgery.

Following medical school, Dr. Alfonso pursued a highly competitive residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan, one of the nation’s premier training programs. The University of Michigan’s Department of Plastic Surgery is distinguished for its comprehensive curriculum that blends aesthetic, reconstructive, and craniofacial surgery, as well as its pioneering work in microsurgical techniques. Over the course of his residency, Dr. Alfonso mastered the intricacies of flap design, complex facial reconstruction, and advanced hand surgery, while also honing his skills in patient assessment, operative planning, and postoperative care. His dedication earned him multiple accolades, including the Resident Scholar Award for research excellence.

He completed a fellowship in Craniofacial Reconstruction, where he collaborated with interdisciplinary teams of maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, and pediatric specialists to address congenital anomalies and traumatic injuries. This intensive training reinforced his ability to orchestrate multi‑stage reconstructive plans, employ cutting‑edge biomaterials, and integrate functional outcomes with aesthetic considerations. The combination of rigorous academic preparation, hands‑on operative experience, and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration has equipped Dr. Alfonso with a uniquely comprehensive skill set that serves the diverse needs of his patients.

Surgical Expertise

Specialized expertise in craniofacial surgery and hand surgery further distinguishes Dr. Alfonso’s practice. In craniofacial surgery, he addresses congenital deformities such as cleft lip and palate, craniosynostosis, and facial asymmetry, employing distraction osteogenesis, custom 3‑D printed implants, and precise osteotomies to achieve functional and aesthetic balance. His hand surgery proficiency includes the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries, tendon repairs, and complex carpal tunnel releases, often integrating regenerative medicine approaches to accelerate healing. By maintaining a multidisciplinary perspective, Dr. Alfonso ensures that each surgical plan integrates functional restoration with aesthetic refinement, delivering outcomes that are both technically sound and deeply satisfying to patients.
