Moreover, Dr. Stoffenberg’s philosophy is rooted in a lifelong commitment to continuous learning, ensuring that his practice remains at the forefront of emerging techniques, safety protocols, and evidence‑based advancements in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

David A. Stoffenberg earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the prestigious NYU School of Medicine, where he distinguished himself as a scholar with a profound curiosity for the intricate relationships between form, function, and human perception. During his medical school tenure, he immersed himself in a curriculum that emphasized both the scientific rigor of surgical anatomy and the nuanced art of patient communication. He completed a series of research projects that explored the biomechanics of facial soft tissue, publishing findings in peer‑reviewed journals and presenting at national conferences. His academic excellence was recognized with multiple honors, including the Dean’s Clinical Excellence Award and a scholarship for outstanding research in craniofacial biology, laying a solid foundation for his future specialization.

Following medical school, Dr. Stoffenberg pursued an intensive residency in Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone Health, one of the nation’s most competitive and comprehensive training programs. Over the course of his six‑year residency, he rotated through a diverse array of subspecialties, including aesthetic surgery, microsurgery, hand surgery, and complex reconstructive procedures. He mastered the art of tissue handling, flap design, and microvascular anastomosis under the mentorship of internationally recognized faculty. His residency experience was punctuated by a series of high‑stakes cases—ranging from traumatic facial reconstructions after motor vehicle accidents to intricate breast reconstructions following mastectomy—each of which honed his technical dexterity and reinforced his commitment to delivering compassionate, patient‑focused care.

To further refine his expertise, Dr. Stoffenberg completed a dedicated fellowship in Craniofacial Surgery at NYU Langone Health, where he focused on the repair of congenital anomalies, complex cranial vault reconstructions, and the management of facial trauma in both pediatric and adult populations. This fellowship offered him unparalleled exposure to cutting‑edge techniques such as distraction osteogenesis, computer‑guided osteotomies, and custom 3‑D‑printed implants. He collaborated closely with multidisciplinary teams that included neurosurgeons, orthodontists, and speech therapists, learning to integrate surgical interventions with comprehensive rehabilitative strategies. The culmination of his fellowship was a capstone research project that evaluated long‑term outcomes of craniofacial reconstruction in syndromic patients, earning him the Craniofacial Surgery Innovation Award and cementing his reputation as a thought leader in the field.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Stoffenberg’s surgical repertoire spans a broad spectrum of craniofacial, aesthetic, and reconstructive procedures, each performed with a meticulous attention to detail that reflects his deep understanding of facial biomechanics. In craniofacial surgery, he has successfully executed intricate cranial vault remodelings for patients with craniosynostosis, employing precision osteotomies and resorbable fixation systems that promote natural bone regrowth while minimizing scarring. His expertise extends to the correction of complex facial asymmetries resulting from congenital deformities such as hemifacial microsomia, where he utilizes a combination of skeletal advancements, soft‑tissue grafts, and orthodontic coordination to restore balanced facial harmony. These procedures are often complemented by the use of state‑of‑the‑art virtual surgical planning, which allows for the creation of patient‑specific cutting guides and implants, thereby reducing operative time and enhancing postoperative precision.

In the realm of aesthetic plastic surgery, Dr. Stoffenberg possesses a refined skill set that includes rhinoplasty, facelifts, breast augmentation, and body contouring. His rhinoplasty technique integrates an open approach with preservation of the native cartilaginous framework, achieving natural‑looking results that respect ethnic and gender‑specific characteristics. For facial rejuvenation, he employs a combination of SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) manipulation, deep plane lifts, and minimally invasive thread lifts, tailoring his approach to each patient’s unique aging pattern. His breast surgeries—ranging from augmentation and mastopexy to autologous reconstruction using DIEP flaps—are performed with a focus on achieving symmetry, optimal implant placement, and long‑term durability. Dr. Stoffenberg’s body contouring work, including abdominoplasty and thigh lifts, emphasizes the preservation of vascular integrity and the strategic placement of scars to maximize aesthetic outcomes while minimizing recovery time.

Pediatric plastic surgery represents another cornerstone of Dr. Stoffenberg’s practice, where his compassionate approach is particularly evident. He has managed a wide array of congenital and acquired conditions, including cleft lip and palate repairs, ear reconstruction for microtia, and soft‑tissue tumor excisions. In each case, he collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that surgical intervention aligns with developmental milestones and long‑term functional goals such as speech, hearing, and psychosocial integration. His pediatric reconstructions are guided by the principle of minimal invasiveness, employing techniques like early intervention with primary cleft repair to reduce the need for secondary procedures and to foster optimal facial growth. The combination of technical expertise, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a nurturing bedside manner has earned him a reputation as a trusted surgeon among families navigating complex pediatric surgical journeys.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Stoffenberg’s clinical philosophy, a commitment that is reflected in his active involvement with leading professional societies and his dedication to ongoing quality improvement initiatives. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), he adheres to the society’s rigorous standards for surgical practice, which include mandatory continuing medical education, peer‑reviewed case audits, and the implementation of evidence‑based protocols for infection control and perioperative management. His participation in ASPS’s Patient Safety Committee has enabled him to contribute to the development of national guidelines that address the prevention of postoperative complications such as seroma formation, nerve injury, and thromboembolic events.

In addition to his ASPS affiliation, Dr. Stoffenberg is an active member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS), where he collaborates with fellow experts to advance the science of plastic and reconstructive surgery through research, education, and advocacy. Within AAPS, he has served on panels that evaluate emerging technologies, ensuring that novel devices and techniques undergo rigorous validation before they are incorporated into routine practice. His leadership in these professional organizations underscores his dedication to maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, as he consistently promotes transparent reporting of outcomes, robust data collection, and the dissemination of best practices across the surgical community.

Recognition of Dr. Stoffenberg’s unwavering focus on safety and excellence is evident through the accolades he has received at NYU Langone Health. He was honored with the NYU Langone Plastic Surgery Faculty Excellence Award, a distinction reserved for physicians who demonstrate exceptional clinical performance, mentorship, and commitment to patient welfare. Moreover, his innovative contributions to craniofacial surgery were celebrated with the Craniofacial Surgery Innovation Award, which highlighted his development of a novel, minimally invasive technique for orbital wall reconstruction that significantly reduced operative time and postoperative morbidity. These honors reflect not only his technical prowess but also his relentless pursuit of safer, more effective surgical solutions for his patients.
