Dr. Dana Towle - Plastic Surgeon in Kansas City, MO

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Dana Towde earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, an institution renowned for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on research-driven clinical practice. During her four years of medical school, she distinguished herself in the anatomy labs, where a meticulous understanding of musculoskeletal and vascular structures would later become the cornerstone of her surgical precision. She completed a series of clinical rotations that exposed her to a broad spectrum of specialties, yet it was the plastic surgery clerkship that ignited her passion for reconstructive artistry. Her academic record was punctuated by honors in surgical pathology, a research fellowship focused on tissue engineering, and a senior thesis exploring the biomechanical properties of dermal grafts, all of which laid a solid foundation for her subsequent specialization.

Following medical school, Dr. Towde pursued a highly competitive residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Missouri, a program celebrated for its blend of aesthetic innovation and complex reconstructive cases. Over the course of six intensive years, she honed her operative dexterity across a diverse case mix that ranged from cleft palate repairs and burn contracture releases to breast reconstruction after mastectomy. The residency emphasized both hands‑on operative experience and scholarly activity; Dr. Towde contributed to multiple multi‑institutional studies on scar modulation and presented her findings at national conferences. Her commitment to continuous learning was evident in the numerous surgical workshops she attended, where she mastered microsurgical techniques and advanced flap design, positioning herself as a future leader in the field.

To further refine her expertise, Dr. Towde completed a fellowship in Hand Surgery at the world‑renowned Mayo Clinic, where she worked alongside some of the most distinguished hand surgeons in the United States. The fellowship provided an immersive environment for mastering delicate microsurgical reconstructions, tendon transfers, and peripheral nerve repairs. At Mayo, she participated in cutting‑edge research exploring nerve regeneration and functional outcomes after complex hand trauma, publishing her work in high‑impact journals. The rigorous training at Mayo not only sharpened her technical acumen but also reinforced a culture of evidence‑based practice and patient‑centered care, values that she has carried forward into her private practice in Kansas City.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Dana Towde’s surgical repertoire encompasses the full spectrum of plastic surgery, from aesthetic refinements to life‑changing reconstructive procedures. In the aesthetic arena, she is celebrated for her nuanced approach to facial rejuvenation, employing a combination of minimally invasive techniques—such as injectable fillers, neuromodulators, and thread lifts—and traditional surgical lifts that restore youthful contours while preserving natural expression. Her breast surgery portfolio includes augmentation, reduction, and lift procedures, each tailored to the patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals. Moreover, she is adept at body contouring, performing liposuction, tummy tucks, and thigh lifts with an emphasis on achieving harmonious proportions and minimizing postoperative scarring. Her commitment to innovation is reflected in her early adoption of technologies like three‑dimensional imaging and computer‑assisted design, which allow patients to visualize potential outcomes and make informed decisions before entering the operating room.

In the realm of reconstructive surgery, Dr. Towde’s expertise shines through in complex cases that demand both functional restoration and aesthetic sensibility. She has performed numerous free‑tissue transfers, such as the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap for breast reconstruction, delivering natural‑looking results with reduced donor‑site morbidity. Her proficiency in microsurgery extends to head and neck reconstruction, where she has restored oral competence and speech after oncologic resections using radial forearm and anterolateral thigh flaps. Additionally, she has pioneered scar revision protocols that integrate laser resurfacing, silicone therapy, and meticulous layered closure, dramatically improving both the appearance and pliability of previously problematic scars. Each reconstructive endeavor is approached with a patient‑first mindset, ensuring that functional recovery and aesthetic outcome are balanced to achieve the highest quality of life.

Hand surgery represents a distinct yet complementary facet of Dr. Towde’s practice, merging her plastic surgery foundation with specialized techniques for restoring dexterity and strength. She routinely treats conditions ranging from traumatic lacerations and complex fractures to degenerative disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis. Her surgical arsenal includes tendon grafts, nerve repairs, and joint arthroplasty, all performed with precision under high‑magnification microscopes. Postoperative rehabilitation is a critical component of her hand surgery protocol; she collaborates closely with occupational therapists to design individualized therapy regimens that expedite functional recovery. By integrating her aesthetic sensibility with hand surgery, Dr. Towde achieves outcomes that not only restore motion but also minimize visible scarring, preserving the hand’s natural appearance and confidence‑boosting functionality.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Dr. Dana Towde’s unwavering dedication to patient safety is reflected in her active participation in several premier professional societies, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Hand Surgery (ASHS). As a member of ASPS, she adheres to the organization’s rigorous standards for ethical practice, continuous education, and peer review, ensuring that her techniques remain at the forefront of evidence‑based medicine. Her involvement with ASHS further underscores her commitment to the nuances of hand surgery, where she contributes to guideline development and participates in workshops that focus on minimizing intra‑operative complications and optimizing postoperative outcomes. In addition to her society memberships, Dr. Towde is board‑certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), a credential that demands ongoing assessment of clinical competence, surgical skill, and patient safety metrics.

The accolades Dr. Towde has garnered serve as external validation of her safety‑first ethos. In 2020, Kansas City Magazine honored her with the Top Plastic Surgeon Award, recognizing not only her aesthetic excellence but also her meticulous approach to risk mitigation and patient education. Two years earlier, the ASPS bestowed upon her the Excellence in Reconstructive Surgery award, citing her innovative techniques that reduced operative time, minimized blood loss, and produced superior functional outcomes. These honors are complemented by her implementation of a comprehensive pre‑operative screening protocol that incorporates advanced imaging, multidisciplinary case reviews, and personalized risk assessments. By integrating these safeguards, Dr. Towde ensures that each patient’s journey—from consultation to recovery—is guided by the highest standards of safety and quality.

Beyond formal recognitions, Dr. Towde has instituted robust quality‑improvement initiatives within her practice. She employs a systematic postoperative monitoring system that tracks wound healing, infection rates, and patient satisfaction, allowing for real‑time adjustments and continuous refinement of surgical protocols. Her office maintains a state‑of‑the‑art sterile processing department, adhering to CDC guidelines and employing ultraviolet sterilization to eliminate microbial contamination of instruments. Moreover, she fosters a culture of transparency, encouraging patients to voice concerns and report any adverse events, which are promptly investigated and addressed. This proactive stance on safety not only reduces complications but also cultivates trust, affirming her reputation as a surgeon who places patient well‑being above all else.
