Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Corrine Nelson earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, an institution renowned for its emphasis on scholarly inquiry and clinical excellence. During her time at UVA, she distinguished herself as a diligent scholar, engaging in groundbreaking research on pediatric wound healing and presenting her findings at national conferences. The rigorous curriculum, combined with early exposure to surgical rotations, laid a solid foundation for her future specialization. Her academic performance placed her among the top percentile of her class, earning her several honors including the Dean’s Award for Clinical Excellence, which recognized her commitment to patient care and academic rigor.

Following medical school, Dr. Nelson pursued a residency in Pediatrics at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she immersed herself in a demanding environment that cultivated both clinical acumen and research prowess. At Johns Hopkins, she rotated through neonatal intensive care units, pediatric surgery services, and multidisciplinary teams that managed complex congenital anomalies. It was during this formative period that she discovered a profound interest in the intersection of pediatric medicine and reconstructive surgery, recognizing the transformative impact that surgical intervention could have on the lives of newborns and children with congenital defects. Her residency culminated in a series of peer‑reviewed publications on neonatal airway management, underscoring her ability to translate bedside observations into scholarly contributions.

To deepen her expertise, Dr. Nelson completed a fellowship in Neonatology at Harvard Medical School, an elite program that offered unparalleled exposure to cutting‑edge neonatal care and research methodologies. At Harvard, she worked alongside leading neonatologists and bioengineers to develop innovative protocols for the management of premature infants, focusing on minimizing invasive procedures while preserving optimal growth and development. Her fellowship research on the use of bio‑resorbable scaffolds for pediatric craniofacial reconstruction earned her the Harvard Fellowship Award for Innovation, a testament to her ability to blend scientific inquiry with surgical application. This comprehensive training—spanning a top‑tier medical school, a world‑class pediatric residency, and a pioneering neonatology fellowship—equipped Dr. Nelson with a unique skill set that seamlessly bridges pediatric medicine and plastic surgery, positioning her as a leader in the field.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Nelson’s surgical expertise is rooted in her extensive experience with neonatology and pediatrics, domains that demand a delicate balance of precision, compassion, and adaptability. In the neonatal intensive care setting, she has performed countless life‑saving procedures ranging from tracheostomies for infants with airway malformations to complex vascular access placements that facilitate critical medication delivery. Her mastery of microsurgical techniques, honed through countless hours in the operating room, enables her to operate on vessels as small as 0.5 mm with unparalleled accuracy—a skill that directly translates to her work in pediatric reconstructive plastic surgery. Whether correcting cleft lip and palate, addressing craniosynostosis, or reconstructing congenital hand anomalies, Dr. Nelson approaches each case with a meticulous attention to anatomical detail and an unwavering commitment to preserving functional integrity.

Beyond neonatal interventions, Dr. Nelson has expanded her repertoire to include a broad spectrum of aesthetic and reconstructive procedures for adolescents and adults. She is renowned for her expertise in facial rejuvenation, breast reconstruction post‑mastectomy, and body contouring, employing advanced techniques such as fat grafting, autologous tissue transfer, and laser‑assisted scar revision. Her ability to tailor each procedure to the patient’s unique physiologic and aesthetic needs stems from her deep understanding of tissue biomechanics, acquired through years of research in pediatric wound healing and scar modulation. This knowledge informs her selection of incision lines, suture materials, and postoperative protocols, resulting in outcomes that are both functionally sound and aesthetically harmonious.

Dr. Nelson’s commitment to innovation is evident in her adoption of regenerative medicine approaches, including the use of platelet‑rich plasma (PRP) and stem‑cell‑derived matrices to enhance wound healing and minimize scarring. She actively participates in clinical trials evaluating novel biomaterials for pediatric craniofacial reconstruction, collaborating with biomedical engineers to refine implant designs that grow with the child, thereby reducing the need for repeat surgeries. Her scholarly contributions—spanning peer‑reviewed articles, textbook chapters, and conference presentations—have positioned her as a thought leader who not only practices advanced surgical techniques but also drives the evolution of the field. Patients and colleagues alike trust Dr. Nelson’s expertise, knowing that her surgical decisions are grounded in a blend of scientific rigor, artistic sensibility, and a profound respect for each patient’s individuality.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Nelson’s practice, a principle reinforced by her active involvement with leading professional organizations. As a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, she adheres to the Academy’s stringent standards for pediatric care, integrating evidence‑based guidelines into every aspect of her surgical planning and postoperative management. Her participation in the Society for Pediatric Research further underscores her dedication to advancing safe clinical practices; she regularly contributes to consensus statements on perioperative protocols for neonates, advocating for reduced operative times, meticulous temperature regulation, and the use of minimally invasive techniques whenever feasible. These contributions have helped shape national policies that prioritize the unique vulnerabilities of pediatric patients, ensuring that safety is embedded at the systemic level.

In recognition of her exemplary dedication to patient safety, Dr. Nelson was honored as Physician of the Year in 2022 by the Society for Pediatric Research, an award that celebrates clinicians who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to clinical excellence, mentorship, and advocacy. The accolade highlighted her pioneering work in establishing a multidisciplinary safety committee at her practice in Manakin Sabot, which conducts regular audits of surgical outcomes, tracks infection rates, and implements corrective action plans in real time. Under her leadership, the committee introduced a standardized pre‑operative checklist modeled after the World Health Organization’s Surgical Safety Checklist, resulting in a 30 % reduction in postoperative complications within the first year of implementation.

Further cementing her reputation for safety, Dr. Nelson received the Excellence in Neonatal Care Award from the National Neonatal Collaborative, an honor bestowed upon clinicians who demonstrate outstanding clinical competence, innovative problem‑solving, and a compassionate approach to the most fragile patients. This award recognized her development of a neonatal skin protection protocol that employs barrier‑enhancing dressings and temperature‑controlled operating rooms, significantly decreasing the incidence of pressure injuries and thermal dysregulation during lengthy procedures. By continually refining protocols, investing in staff education, and fostering a culture of transparency, Dr. Nelson ensures that each patient—whether a newborn requiring life‑saving surgery or an adult seeking aesthetic enhancement—receives care that meets the highest standards of safety and quality.
