Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Hartman's academic journey began at the prestigious UCLA School of Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. At UCLA, he distinguished himself not only through exemplary academic performance but also through a series of research projects that explored the molecular underpinnings of skin regeneration and scar formation. His thesis work, which investigated the role of growth factor modulation in postoperative healing, earned him the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research. This early exposure to both clinical practice and investigative science laid a solid foundation for his future specialization in dermatologic surgery.

Following his medical degree, Dr. Hartman pursued a dermatology residency at Howard University College of Medicine, a program renowned for its rigorous clinical training and commitment to serving diverse patient populations. During his residency, he rotated through high‑volume surgical clinics, where he refined his skills in excisional procedures, Mohs micrographic surgery, and complex reconstructions. The Howard environment, steeped in a culture of academic excellence and community service, further honed his ability to manage a wide spectrum of dermatologic conditions, from benign lesions to malignant tumors, with precision and compassion.

Throughout his residency, Dr. Hartman also sought out additional fellowships and subspecialty training that would augment his expertise in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. He completed a fellowship in cosmetic dermatology, focusing on facial rejuvenation techniques, and an intensive course in laser medicine, which deepened his understanding of phototherapeutic modalities. These supplemental experiences, combined with his core training, equipped him with a versatile skill set that bridges medical dermatology, surgical dermatology, and cosmetic surgery, allowing him to offer comprehensive solutions to patients seeking both functional and aesthetic improvements.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Hartman's surgical repertoire encompasses a broad spectrum of procedures that reflect his dual commitment to medical dermatology and aesthetic excellence. In the realm of medical dermatology, he excels at diagnosing and managing complex skin disorders, employing evidence‑based therapies that range from topical immunomodulators to systemic biologics. His nuanced understanding of disease pathophysiology enables him to tailor treatment plans that address not only the visible manifestations but also the underlying immunologic drivers of conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and cutaneous lymphomas.

Within surgical dermatology, Dr. Hartman is renowned for his mastery of Mohs micrographic surgery, a technique that maximizes tumor clearance while preserving healthy tissue. His meticulous approach to margin assessment and reconstruction has resulted in exceptionally low recurrence rates and superior cosmetic outcomes for patients with skin cancers. He also performs a variety of reconstructive procedures, including local flap repairs, grafting, and scar revision, leveraging his deep knowledge of tissue dynamics to restore both function and form after oncologic excision or trauma.

Cosmetic dermatology is another pillar of Dr. Hartman's practice, where his expertise shines through a suite of minimally invasive and surgical aesthetic interventions. He is a certified injector of botulinum toxin and dermal fillers, employing precise volumetric calculations and an artistic eye to achieve natural, harmonious results. His laser and light therapy offerings include fractional CO₂ resurfacing, intense pulsed light (IPL) for pigment correction, and non‑ablative laser treatments for skin tightening. Moreover, Dr. Hartman has dedicated significant research time to the care of patients with skin of color, developing protocols that minimize post‑inflammatory hyperpigmentation and optimize outcomes for diverse melanin profiles.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Hartman's practice philosophy, a principle reinforced by his active involvement in leading professional societies. As a member of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), he adheres to the Academy’s stringent standards for clinical care, continuing education, and ethical practice. His affiliation with the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) underscores his commitment to adopting surgical techniques that prioritize minimally invasive approaches, reduced operative time, and accelerated recovery, all while maintaining the highest level of procedural precision.

Dr. Hartman's dedication to safety extends to his participation in the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS), where he stays abreast of evolving laser safety protocols, device certifications, and evidence‑based treatment parameters. This involvement ensures that every laser or light‑based procedure in his clinic is performed with calibrated energy settings, appropriate protective measures, and comprehensive patient counseling. Additionally, his membership in the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) reflects his adherence to a multidisciplinary framework that integrates surgical expertise with cosmetic artistry, with patient safety woven into every step of the treatment continuum.

Recognition of Dr. Hartman's safety and clinical excellence is evident in the awards he has received throughout his career. In 2018, he was honored with the Dermatology Excellence Award, a distinction that celebrates his contributions to advancing dermatologic practice and his unwavering commitment to patient welfare. Two years later, the Alabama Top Dermatologist accolade highlighted his reputation as a trusted and safe provider within the state. These accolades, combined with his rigorous adherence to safety guidelines, reinforce the confidence that patients place in his hands.
