Dr. Cassie Nghiêm - Plastic Surgeon in Washington, DC

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Cassie Nghiêm earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she distinguished herself academically by graduating in the top 10% of her class and receiving the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. Her medical education was marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and surgical science, complemented by early exposure to reconstructive and aesthetic surgery through a series of elective rotations in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. During her clinical clerkships, she demonstrated an innate ability to synthesize complex diagnostic information, formulate precise surgical plans, and communicate these plans with clarity and compassion—a skill set that would later become a hallmark of her practice.

Following medical school, Dr. Nghiêm completed a rigorous General Surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, a program renowned for its demanding operative volume and commitment to academic excellence. In this crucible of surgical training, she honed her technical dexterity, mastering the fundamentals of tissue handling, hemostasis, and operative decision‑making across a spectrum of procedures ranging from emergent trauma repairs to intricate oncologic resections. Her residency culminated in a research dissertation that explored novel techniques in wound closure, earning her the Resident Research Award and setting the stage for her future contributions to the field of aesthetic surgery.

Driven by a desire to specialize in the nuanced art of aesthetic transformation, Dr. Nghiêm pursued a dedicated Plastic Surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, where she trained under world‑renowned mentors who emphasized both reconstructive principles and aesthetic innovation. During this fellowship, she performed over 500 operative cases, including complex breast reconstructions, facial rejuvenation procedures, and body contouring surgeries, while also contributing to peer‑reviewed publications that examined outcomes of emerging minimally invasive techniques. This intensive training equipped her with a comprehensive skill set that seamlessly integrates reconstructive rigor with aesthetic finesse, establishing her as a surgeon capable of delivering safe, precise, and artistically superior results.

Surgical Expertise

Among Dr. Nghiêm’s most sought‑after procedures is breast augmentation, a specialty in which she combines a deep understanding of breast anatomy with a meticulous approach to implant selection, positioning, and incision technique. She employs a patient‑centered algorithm that assesses thoracic wall dimensions, soft‑tissue quality, and aesthetic goals to recommend the optimal implant size, shape, and surface—whether silicone or saline—to achieve natural‑looking results that harmonize with the patient’s overall body proportions. Her mastery of dual‑plane and submuscular placement, along with the strategic use of anatomical and round implants, allows her to tailor outcomes that range from subtle enhancement to dramatic transformation while minimizing complications such as capsular contracture and implant malposition.

In the realm of body contouring, Dr. Nghiêm’s expertise in liposuction reflects a commitment to precision, safety, and lasting aesthetic improvement. She utilizes advanced technologies such as tumescent infiltration, power‑assist devices, and ultrasonic-assisted liposuction to selectively target adipose deposits while preserving surrounding neurovascular structures. By integrating three‑dimensional imaging and preoperative mapping, she crafts individualized treatment plans that address stubborn fat pockets in the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and posterior neck, delivering sculpted silhouettes with minimal downtime. Her emphasis on postoperative care—including compression garment protocols and staged activity progression—ensures that patients experience optimal contour retention and a swift return to daily activities.

For patients seeking a comprehensive abdominal transformation, Dr. Nghiêm performs abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) with a focus on both aesthetic refinement and functional restoration. She meticulously evaluates the integrity of the abdominal wall, the degree of skin laxity, and the presence of diastasis recti to determine the most appropriate surgical approach, whether it be a classic full‑width abdominoplasty, a limited‑incision mini‑tuck, or a fleur‑de‑lis modification for extensive abdominal excess. Her technique incorporates meticulous dissection, strategic placement of progressive tension sutures, and selective liposuction to achieve a flat, toned abdomen with a natural‑appearing umbilicus. By adhering to evidence‑based protocols for infection prophylaxis, venous thromboembolism prevention, and pain management, she consistently delivers outcomes that exceed patient expectations while maintaining the highest standards of safety.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Dr. Cassie Nghiêm’s unwavering dedication to patient safety is reflected in her active involvement with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), where she serves on the Committee for Patient Safety and Outcomes. In this capacity, she contributes to the development of national guidelines that address perioperative risk mitigation, postoperative monitoring, and the ethical dissemination of emerging technologies. Her participation in ASPS’s Continuous Quality Improvement Program allows her practice to benchmark outcomes against peer institutions, fostering a culture of transparency and continuous improvement that directly benefits the patients she serves. Moreover, she regularly presents her findings at ASPS annual meetings, sharing data on complication rates, patient satisfaction indices, and long‑term aesthetic durability, thereby advancing the collective knowledge base of the specialty.

Recognition of Dr. Nghiêm’s commitment to excellence culminated in the receipt of the prestigious Patient Choice Award, an honor bestowed upon physicians who demonstrate outstanding patient‑centered care, superior clinical outcomes, and a compassionate bedside manner. This award is based on rigorous, patient‑driven surveys that assess factors such as communication clarity, empathy, postoperative support, and overall satisfaction. The award’s criteria align perfectly with Dr. Nghiêm’s practice philosophy, underscoring her ability to translate technical mastery into a supportive, reassuring, and empowering patient experience. Recipients of the Patient Choice Award are celebrated for their ability to turn complex surgical journeys into collaborative partnerships that prioritize safety, education, and emotional well‑being.

Beyond institutional affiliations, Dr. Nghiêm implements a comprehensive safety infrastructure within her Washington, DC clinic that incorporates state‑of‑the‑art operating rooms, certified surgical assistants, and a dedicated anesthesia team experienced in aesthetic procedures. She employs evidence‑based protocols such as preoperative screening for venous thromboembolism risk, intra‑operative temperature regulation, and postoperative pain management pathways that minimize opioid reliance. Her practice also utilizes a robust electronic health record system that flags potential drug interactions, tracks post‑operative complications in real time, and facilitates seamless communication among the multidisciplinary care team. This systematic approach ensures that every aspect of the patient’s surgical journey is monitored, optimized, and documented, reinforcing a culture of safety that permeates every level of care.
