Meet Burton M. Sundin: Philosophy and Approach
Burton M. Sundin, MD, stands as a paradigm of compassionate artistry in the field of plastic surgery, blending an unwavering commitment to patient-centered care with a deeply rooted belief that the human form is both a canvas and a conduit for personal narrative. From his earliest days in the historic city of Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Sundin cultivated a philosophy that surgery is not merely a technical pursuit but a profound dialogue between surgeon and patient, wherein the surgeon must first listen, understand, and honor the individual aspirations, fears, and cultural contexts that shape each person's desire for change. This philosophy is anchored in the conviction that beauty is not a monolith but an evolving expression of identity, health, and confidence, and that the surgeon's role is to facilitate a safe, ethical, and aesthetically harmonious transformation that aligns with the patient's intrinsic sense of self.
In practice, Dr. Sundin's approach is characterized by meticulous preoperative consultation, during which he employs a combination of state-of-the‑state imaging technology, three‑dimensional modeling, and a collaborative decision‑making process that ensures patients are fully informed about the possibilities, limitations, and realistic outcomes of each procedure. He emphasizes the importance of setting achievable goals, and he routinely incorporates multidisciplinary perspectives—ranging from dermatology to psychology—to address any underlying psychosocial factors that may influence postoperative satisfaction. By fostering an environment of transparency, empathy, and mutual respect, Dr. Sundin empowers patients to become active participants in their own aesthetic journey, thereby enhancing trust and fostering long‑term relationships that extend far beyond the operating room.
Beyond the clinic, Dr. Sundin serves as an advocate for the broader community, championing initiatives that promote body positivity, health literacy, and access to reconstructive services for underserved populations. He regularly contributes lectures to medical conferences, publishes peer‑reviewed articles on innovative techniques, and mentors emerging surgeons, all with the aim of elevating the standards of care within the specialty. His dedication to continuous learning and his insistence on ethical practice have earned him the reputation of a surgeon who not only sculpts physical form but also nurtures the confidence and well‑being of those he serves.

Burton M. Sundin's academic journey began at Norfolk Academy, a distinguished preparatory institution renowned for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on intellectual curiosity. At Norfolk Academy, he excelled in the sciences, earning accolades in biology and chemistry while also demonstrating leadership through participation in student government and community service projects. The formative experiences at Norfolk Academy instilled in him a disciplined work ethic, a passion for scientific inquiry, and an early appreciation for the interplay between academic rigor and compassionate service—principles that would later define his medical career.
Following his secondary education, Dr. Sundin matriculated at Duke University School of Medicine, where he earned his MD with honors. At Duke, he distinguished himself not only through academic excellence but also through involvement in cutting‑edge research initiatives focusing on tissue regeneration and microvascular surgery. He contributed to several high‑impact publications that explored novel approaches to wound healing, and his work was recognized with a research fellowship award. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Dr. Sundin completed clinical rotations that exposed him to a broad spectrum of surgical specialties, solidifying his decision to pursue plastic surgery as a career that harmoniously blends reconstructive science with aesthetic refinement.
After completing medical school, Dr. Sundin embarked on a demanding residency in plastic surgery at the University of Virginia, a program lauded for its comprehensive training in both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures. During his residency, he refined his technical skills under the mentorship of nationally recognized surgeons, mastering complex microsurgical techniques, craniofacial reconstruction, and aesthetic facial surgery. He also engaged in an extensive fellowship in hand surgery, which further broadened his expertise in functional restoration. Throughout his training, Dr. Sundin earned the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Resident of the Year award in 2005, a testament to his clinical acumen, leadership, and dedication to advancing the field.
Surgical Expertise
Dr. Sundin's surgical repertoire encompasses a full spectrum of plastic surgery, ranging from intricate reconstructive procedures to sophisticated aesthetic enhancements. In the realm of reconstructive surgery, he has performed countless successful free‑flap transfers for patients with traumatic injuries, head and neck cancer resections, and congenital anomalies, leveraging microsurgical precision to restore both form and function. His expertise in breast reconstruction, particularly autologous techniques such as the DIEP flap, has earned him a reputation for delivering natural‑appearing results with minimal donor‑site morbidity, thereby improving quality of life for oncology survivors.
Within aesthetic surgery, Dr. Sundin is celebrated for his nuanced approach to facial rejuvenation, body contouring, and breast augmentation. He utilizes a combination of traditional surgical methods and minimally invasive technologies—such as laser resurfacing, radiofrequency tightening, and injectable neuromodulators—to achieve harmonious, age‑appropriate outcomes that reflect each patient's unique facial architecture. His meticulous attention to detail in rhinoplasty, for instance, involves a thorough analysis of nasal proportions, cartilage dynamics, and patient expectations, resulting in outcomes that are both structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing.
Beyond individual procedures, Dr. Sundin is at the forefront of integrating emerging technologies into surgical practice. He has pioneered the use of three‑dimensional printing for preoperative planning in complex craniofacial reconstructions, allowing for precise customization of implants and osteotomies. Additionally, he actively participates in clinical trials investigating the efficacy of stem‑cell enriched fat grafting for facial volume restoration, a technique that promises to reduce donor‑site complications while enhancing graft survival. His commitment to continuous innovation ensures that his patients benefit from the most advanced, evidence‑based techniques available in modern plastic surgery.
Commitment to Patient Safety
Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Sundin's practice, a principle reflected in his active involvement with professional societies and his adherence to stringent standards of care. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), he routinely participates in continuing medical education programs that emphasize the latest safety protocols, infection control measures, and ethical considerations in aesthetic medicine. His affiliation with the Virginia Society of Plastic Surgeons further underscores his dedication to state‑level advocacy for patient protection, where he collaborates with peers to develop guidelines that address local regulatory nuances and community health needs.
Dr. Sundin's credentials include certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a rigorous evaluation process that validates his competence in both reconstructive and cosmetic domains. This board certification, coupled with his ongoing commitment to peer review and quality improvement initiatives, ensures that his surgical practice consistently meets or exceeds national benchmarks for safety and efficacy. His dedication to patient safety was publicly recognized when Richmond Magazine honored him with the Best Plastic Surgeon Award in 2022, a distinction that highlighted his exemplary postoperative outcomes, low complication rates, and unwavering patient satisfaction scores.
In addition to institutional affiliations, Dr. Sundin implements a comprehensive, multi‑layered safety protocol within his clinic. Preoperative assessments incorporate detailed medical history reviews, risk stratification tools, and multidisciplinary consultations when necessary. Intraoperatively, he employs advanced monitoring technologies, including real‑time tissue perfusion assessment and intraoperative navigation systems, to minimize the risk of inadvertent injury. Postoperatively, he maintains a structured follow‑up schedule that includes wound assessments, pain management optimization, and early detection of potential complications. This holistic approach to patient safety reflects his belief that the surgeon's responsibility extends far beyond the operating table, encompassing the entire continuum of care.
