Dr. Brad Scanlan - Plastic Surgeon in Fayetteville, NC

• Outstanding Surgeon Award (2018)

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Brad Scanlan’s journey into the realm of plastic surgery began with a rigorous academic foundation that combined scientific rigor with a compassionate osteopathic perspective. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in the year 2000, an institution renowned for its emphasis on holistic patient care and the integration of osteopathic manipulative treatment into mainstream medical practice. Throughout his osteopathic training, Dr. Scanlan distinguished himself not only through academic excellence but also through a deep curiosity about the structural and functional aspects of the human body, a curiosity that would later become the backbone of his surgical artistry. His residency rotations exposed him to a breadth of medical specialties, from internal medicine to orthopedics, each reinforcing his belief that a surgeon must possess a comprehensive understanding of systemic health before altering form.

Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr. Scanlan completed a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Saint Joseph's University, a program that emphasized analytical thinking, quantitative problem‑solving, and rigorous laboratory methodology. This scientific background provided him with a robust foundation in biochemistry, pharmacology, and the molecular mechanisms that underpin tissue healing and regeneration. The meticulous discipline required in chemistry labs translated seamlessly into the operating theater, where precision, timing, and an exacting attention to detail are paramount. Moreover, his undergraduate experience cultivated a habit of meticulous documentation and data interpretation—skills that have proven indispensable in both clinical research and the nuanced planning of complex reconstructive procedures.

The transition from a solid scientific education to the specialized world of plastic surgery was marked by a series of highly competitive residencies and fellowships. Dr. Scanlan completed an intensive general surgery residency, where he honed his technical dexterity, learned to manage peri‑operative complications, and developed a keen sense for surgical decision‑making under pressure. Following this, he pursued a dedicated plastic surgery residency that immersed him in both aesthetic and reconstructive domains, allowing him to master microsurgical techniques, tissue expansion, and flap reconstruction. His fellowship training further refined his expertise, focusing on craniofacial reconstruction and complex breast reconstruction, positioning him as a surgeon capable of addressing the most challenging cases with confidence and compassion. Throughout his educational odyssey, Dr. Scanlan consistently demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, research, and the continual refinement of his craft.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Brad Scanlan’s surgical repertoire is distinguished by a dual focus on plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery, two disciplines that, while interconnected, demand distinct skill sets, artistic sensibilities, and technical mastery. In the realm of aesthetic plastic surgery, he has become a sought‑after specialist for facial rejuvenation, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, and body contouring procedures. His approach to facial rejuvenation integrates a thorough understanding of facial anatomy with state‑of‑the‑art technologies such as laser resurfacing, radiofrequency tightening, and injectable volumizers, enabling him to achieve natural, age‑appropriate results that preserve the patient’s unique identity. For breast augmentation, Dr. Scanlan employs a patient‑centered methodology that balances aesthetic goals with functional considerations, utilizing a range of implant options, incision sites, and placement techniques to tailor outcomes that harmonize with the patient’s body proportions and lifestyle.

In reconstructive surgery, Dr. Scanlan’s expertise shines in the restoration of form and function following trauma, oncologic resection, or congenital anomalies. His proficiency in microsurgical free‑flap transfer allows him to reconstruct complex defects with tissue harvested from distant sites, ensuring optimal vascularity and minimal donor‑site morbidity. One of his hallmark achievements is the successful reconstruction of extensive head and neck defects after tumor excision, where he employs composite flaps that restore both structural integrity and aesthetic contour. Additionally, his work in breast reconstruction after mastectomy exemplifies his commitment to patient empowerment, offering options ranging from tissue‑expander/implant techniques to autologous DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap reconstruction, each selected to align with the patient’s preferences, body habitus, and oncologic considerations.

Beyond individual procedures, Dr. Scanlan is a pioneer in integrating emerging technologies into his surgical practice. He has embraced three‑dimensional imaging and virtual surgical planning, tools that allow him to simulate operative outcomes, anticipate anatomical challenges, and communicate realistic expectations to patients. In complex craniofacial reconstructions, he utilizes computer‑aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to fabricate patient‑specific implants and guides, enhancing precision and reducing operative time. His commitment to continuous innovation is also evident in his adoption of minimally invasive techniques, such as endoscopic brow lifts and laser‑assisted scar revision, which reduce postoperative discomfort and accelerate recovery. Through a blend of artistic vision, technical excellence, and a relentless pursuit of advancement, Dr. Scanlan delivers surgical outcomes that are both functionally robust and aesthetically refined.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety lies at the heart of Dr. Brad Scanlan’s practice, a principle reinforced by his active involvement in premier professional societies and recognition by his peers. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Dr. Scanlan adheres to the organization’s stringent standards for ethical practice, continuing education, and patient advocacy. He regularly participates in ASPS-sponsored workshops, webinars, and symposiums, ensuring that his surgical techniques remain aligned with the latest evidence‑based guidelines and safety protocols. Moreover, his engagement with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) underscores his commitment to the broader surgical community’s standards, emphasizing peri‑operative risk assessment, infection control, and postoperative monitoring. Through these affiliations, Dr. Scanlan gains access to a network of resources that inform his practice, from the implementation of surgical safety checklists to the adoption of best‑practice protocols for managing anticoagulation and comorbidities.

The culmination of Dr. Scanlan’s dedication to safety and excellence was publicly recognized in 2018 when he received the Outstanding Surgeon Award, an honor bestowed upon physicians who demonstrate exceptional skill, compassionate care, and a steadfast commitment to patient welfare. This accolade reflected not only his technical prowess but also his proactive approach to mitigating surgical risks. He has instituted comprehensive pre‑operative screening programs that evaluate cardiovascular health, metabolic status, and psychosocial factors, thereby identifying potential complications before they arise. In the operating room, he employs advanced monitoring technologies, including intra‑operative nerve monitoring and real‑time perfusion assessment, which minimize the likelihood of inadvertent injury and ensure optimal tissue viability during reconstructive procedures.

Beyond formal recognitions, Dr. Scanlan’s safety culture permeates every facet of his clinic. He has instituted a robust postoperative follow‑up system that leverages telemedicine platforms for early detection of wound healing issues, infection, or unexpected pain, allowing timely interventions that prevent escalation. His staff undergoes regular training in sterile technique, emergency response, and patient communication, fostering a cohesive team environment where safety is a shared responsibility. Additionally, he maintains an open-door policy for patients to discuss concerns, reinforcing transparency and trust. By intertwining professional society standards, award‑winning performance, and an ingrained safety-first mindset, Dr. Scanlan ensures that each patient’s journey from consultation to recovery is marked by the highest levels of care and protection.
