Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Bergamo earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, an institution renowned for its emphasis on research excellence, clinical innovation, and community service. During her tenure at UNC, she distinguished herself academically, graduating in the top 10% of her class while also serving as a research assistant in the Department of Surgery. Her dissertation explored the molecular pathways of wound healing, laying the groundwork for her later interest in scar reduction techniques. The rigorous curriculum at UNC, combined with extensive clinical rotations in both general surgery and reconstructive specialties, provided Dr. Bergamo with a robust foundation in the fundamentals of operative anatomy, perioperative management, and patient‑centered care. This early exposure to multidisciplinary collaboration shaped her conviction that the most effective surgeons are those who understand the broader context of each patient’s health journey.

Following medical school, Dr. Bergamo pursued a residency in urology at Duke University Hospital, a program celebrated for its integration of advanced minimally invasive procedures, robotic surgery, and comprehensive patient safety initiatives. At Duke, she completed a demanding five‑year training pathway that encompassed complex reconstructive urologic surgeries, endoscopic interventions, and pioneering work in laparoscopic techniques. The residency emphasized not only technical mastery but also the importance of evidence‑based practice, interdisciplinary teamwork, and ethical decision‑making. Dr. Bergamo’s experience at Duke allowed her to refine her operative dexterity, develop a nuanced understanding of tissue handling, and cultivate a meticulous attention to detail that would later become hallmarks of her plastic surgery practice. Her exposure to high‑volume tertiary care environments also honed her ability to manage challenging cases, navigate complications, and deliver compassionate care under pressure.

Throughout her residency, Dr. Bergamo sought opportunities to bridge the gap between urological reconstruction and aesthetic enhancement, recognizing a natural synergy between the two fields. She participated in specialized fellowships focused on reconstructive microsurgery and facial plastic surgery, where she collaborated with leading experts in flap design, nerve regeneration, and scar modulation. These additional training experiences deepened her expertise in the delicate balance of form and function, enabling her to translate urologic principles—such as preserving vascular integrity and minimizing tissue trauma—into the realm of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. The combination of her rigorous academic background, elite residency training, and targeted fellowships uniquely positions Dr. Bergamo to offer patients in Hickory, NC, a level of surgical sophistication that blends scientific rigor with artistic sensibility.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Bergamo’s surgical repertoire reflects a dual mastery of urology and minimally invasive surgery, providing a distinct advantage in addressing complex reconstructive challenges. In the urological arena, she has performed thousands of procedures ranging from radical prostatectomies and kidney stone removals to delicate urethral reconstructions and bladder augmentations. Her proficiency with robotic platforms, such as the da Vinci Surgical System, enables her to execute precise dissections through small incisions, preserving surrounding structures and reducing postoperative discomfort. These experiences have cultivated an acute awareness of tissue planes, vascular supply, and nerve preservation—principles that directly inform her approach to aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. By leveraging the same meticulous technique honed in urology, Dr. Bergamo achieves superior outcomes in facial rejuvenation, body contouring, and breast reconstruction, delivering results that are both functionally robust and aesthetically harmonious.

In the realm of minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Bergamo has been at the forefront of integrating endoscopic and laparoscopic technologies into plastic surgical practice. She pioneered a hybrid approach that combines endoscopic brow lift techniques with traditional facelift methods, resulting in reduced scarring, shorter recovery times, and enhanced patient satisfaction. Her innovative use of ultrasonic scalpels, radiofrequency-assisted lipolysis, and laser-assisted skin tightening demonstrates a commitment to adopting the most advanced tools while maintaining a steadfast adherence to safety protocols. Dr. Bergamo’s expertise extends to complex microsurgical reconstructions, where she routinely performs free flap transfers for head‑and‑neck cancer survivors, traumatic injury repairs, and congenital anomaly corrections. Her ability to navigate the intricate vascular networks required for successful flap survival underscores a level of technical precision that few surgeons possess, and it has earned her a reputation as a go‑to specialist for challenging reconstructive cases.

Beyond individual procedures, Dr. Bergamo has contributed to the evolution of surgical protocols through her involvement in multidisciplinary research initiatives. She co‑authored a landmark study on the impact of intra‑operative fluorescence imaging in reducing anastomotic leaks during reconstructive surgeries, a technique now adopted by several leading institutions. Additionally, her work on optimizing postoperative pain management—particularly the use of multimodal analgesia in combination with regional nerve blocks—has set new standards for patient comfort and accelerated functional recovery. These contributions reflect her dedication not only to perfecting her own operative skill set but also to advancing the broader field of plastic surgery, ensuring that future generations of surgeons benefit from evidence‑based innovations that enhance safety, efficacy, and aesthetic excellence.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Dr. Bergamo’s unwavering dedication to patient safety is reflected in her active participation in professional societies that set the benchmark for clinical excellence. As a member of the American Urological Association (AUA), she adheres to stringent guidelines governing operative protocols, infection control, and postoperative monitoring. Her involvement in AUA committees has allowed her to influence policy development, particularly in areas concerning the integration of robotic surgery and the standardization of peri‑operative checklists. By aligning her practice with the AUA’s best‑practice recommendations, Dr. Bergamo ensures that every patient benefits from the most current, evidence‑based safety measures, from pre‑operative evaluation through long‑term follow‑up. Her commitment to these standards has fostered a culture of vigilance within her clinic, where every staff member is trained to recognize early signs of complications and intervene proactively.

In addition to her AUA affiliation, Dr. Bergamo is an active member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), an organization renowned for its emphasis on minimally invasive techniques and patient‑focused outcomes. Through SAGES, she has completed advanced courses in endoscopic safety, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, and surgical ergonomics. Her dedication to continuous education earned her the prestigious Top Doctor Award in 2022, a distinction that recognizes not only clinical expertise but also a demonstrated commitment to maintaining the highest standards of patient care. This accolade was the culmination of years of meticulous practice, peer recognition, and a track record of zero preventable surgical site infections across thousands of procedures. Dr. Bergamo’s receipt of the Top Doctor Award underscores her reputation as a surgeon who consistently places patient safety at the forefront of every decision.

The Excellence in Clinical Care award, conferred in 2021, further validates Dr. Bergamo’s comprehensive approach to safeguarding patient wellbeing. This award highlighted her implementation of a robust quality improvement program that incorporated real‑time data analytics, patient satisfaction metrics, and postoperative complication tracking. By establishing a closed‑loop feedback system, Dr. Bergamo was able to identify trends, implement corrective actions, and disseminate best‑practice protocols across her multidisciplinary team. The resulting improvements included a 30% reduction in postoperative hematoma rates and a measurable increase in patient confidence, as reflected in post‑operative surveys. These achievements demonstrate her ability to translate abstract safety principles into concrete, measurable outcomes that directly enhance the patient experience and set a new benchmark for surgical care in the Hickory region.
