At the heart of Dr. Ashraf’s practice is a deep respect for cultural diversity and individual identity. Growing up in a multicultural household, she cultivated an early appreciation for the varied definitions of beauty across societies. This sensitivity informs her surgical aesthetic, allowing her to tailor techniques that honor a patient’s heritage while achieving natural, harmonious results. Whether sculpting the contours of a male chest wall or refining the delicate balance of facial proportions for a young woman, Dr. Ashraf’s artistry is always guided by the principle that the patient’s authentic self should be the canvas upon which surgical excellence is painted.

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Bernadette Wang Ashraf earned her medical degree from the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she graduated with honors and distinction in the top quartile of her class. Her tenure at Johns Hopkins was marked by an unrelenting pursuit of academic excellence, earning multiple research awards for her work on wound healing dynamics and extracellular matrix remodeling. She completed a rigorous core curriculum that emphasized evidence‑based medicine, surgical anatomy, and patient‑centered communication, laying the foundation for a career defined by both scientific rigor and compassionate care.

Following medical school, Dr. Ashraf pursued a combined residency in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System, a program renowned for its demanding operative volume and multidisciplinary exposure. During this six‑year training, she logged over 3,500 operative cases, ranging from complex microsurgical free‑flap reconstructions to aesthetic facial procedures. Her mentors consistently highlighted her meticulous technique, decisive intra‑operative judgment, and ability to mentor junior residents, qualities that earned her the Resident Teacher of the Year award in her final year.

In addition to her clinical training, Dr. Ashraf completed a fellowship in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery at the Manhattan Plastic Surgery Institute, where she refined her expertise in breast aesthetics, body contouring, and facial rejuvenation. The fellowship emphasized advanced technologies such as 3‑D imaging, laser‑assisted liposuction, and autologous fat grafting, allowing her to integrate cutting‑edge methods into her evolving practice. Her research during this period focused on long‑term patient satisfaction scores after breast augmentation, culminating in a peer‑reviewed publication in the Journal of Aesthetic Surgery.

Dr. Ashraf’s commitment to lifelong learning is further evidenced by her participation in numerous international conferences, hands‑on workshops, and board‑certified continuing medical education courses. She holds active certifications in both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, and she is a regular faculty member at the Southern Association of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting, where she shares her insights on emerging trends in minimally invasive body contouring and regenerative aesthetics.

Surgical Expertise

Breast surgery stands as one of Dr. Ashraf’s core specialties, encompassing both reconstructive and aesthetic procedures. She has performed thousands of breast augmentations, reductions, lifts, and reconstructions, employing a spectrum of techniques from submuscular and subglandular implant placement to autologous tissue transfer using the DIEP flap. Her meticulous pre‑operative planning utilizes three‑dimensional volumetric analysis to predict implant shape, size, and positioning, ensuring symmetrical and natural outcomes. Moreover, she incorporates the latest advancements in silicone implant technology and bio‑compatible mesh to minimize capsular contracture and enhance long‑term durability.

In the realm of body contouring, Dr. Ashraf is celebrated for her mastery of liposuction, abdominoplasty, and thigh lifts. She leverages ultrasound‑assisted liposuction (UAL) and power‑assist technologies to achieve precise adipose removal while preserving surrounding vascular structures. Her abdominoplasty technique combines traditional rectus plication with progressive tension sutures, dramatically reducing seroma rates and promoting rapid recovery. For patients seeking comprehensive transformation, she offers staged combination procedures that integrate liposuction, tummy tuck, and buttock augmentation, delivering harmonious proportion across the entire silhouette.

Cosmetic facial surgery is another pillar of Dr. Ashraf’s practice, where she blends artistic vision with surgical precision. Her repertoire includes rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, facelifts, and minimally invasive injectables. She employs a “layered rejuvenation” philosophy, addressing skeletal, soft‑tissue, and dermal components in a sequential manner to achieve timeless, natural results. Advanced techniques such as the deep plane facelift and fat‑preserving rhytidectomy allow her to restore youthful contours while preserving facial expression, a hallmark of her aesthetic philosophy.

Beyond standard procedures, Dr. Ashraf is at the forefront of regenerative plastic surgery. She has pioneered the integration of platelet‑rich plasma (PRP) and stem‑cell enriched fat grafting into both reconstructive and aesthetic protocols. These biologic adjuncts accelerate tissue healing, improve graft viability, and reduce postoperative bruising. Her research collaborations with biomedical engineers have resulted in proprietary protocols for optimizing cell viability during autologous fat transfer, positioning her practice as a leader in the next generation of aesthetic surgery.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Ashraf’s surgical philosophy, a principle reinforced by her active involvement in leading professional societies. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), she adheres to the organization’s rigorous standards for operative protocols, infection control, and ethical patient consent. She regularly contributes to ASPS consensus statements on peri‑operative antibiotic stewardship and participates in peer‑reviewed safety audits that benchmark best practices across the specialty.

Dr. Ashraf also holds membership in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), where she collaborates with peers to develop guidelines for minimally invasive procedures, patient selection criteria, and postoperative monitoring. Her contributions to ASAPS’s “Safety First” initiative have helped disseminate evidence‑based strategies for reducing complications associated with dermal fillers and neuromodulators, ensuring that even the most subtle aesthetic enhancements are delivered with the highest degree of safety.

In addition to her society affiliations, Dr. Ashraf is a distinguished member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS). Through AACS, she participates in credentialing committees that evaluate surgeon competence, facility accreditation, and outcome reporting. Her leadership role in the AACS Quality Assurance Committee has led to the implementation of standardized postoperative follow‑up schedules and the adoption of patient‑reported outcome measures (PROMs) that capture real‑world satisfaction and functional recovery.

Recognition of Dr. Ashraf’s unwavering dedication to excellence is reflected in her inclusion on the Castle Connolly Top Doctor list, an honor bestowed upon physicians who demonstrate superior clinical expertise, peer respect, and a commitment to continuous improvement. This accolade is the result of an exhaustive vetting process that includes confidential peer nominations, rigorous chart reviews, and verification of board certifications. It underscores her reputation as a trusted surgeon whose practice is synonymous with safety, integrity, and outstanding clinical outcomes.
