Dr. Asad Cheema - Plastic Surgeon in Joliet, IL

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Asad Cheema’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign, where he distinguished himself as a scholar with a keen interest in human anatomy, cellular biology, and the physiological underpinnings of tissue regeneration. His undergraduate experience was marked by rigorous coursework, laboratory research, and a series of honors projects that explored the molecular mechanisms of wound healing, laying a scientific foundation that would later inform his surgical techniques and postoperative protocols. Throughout his time at UIUC, Dr. Cheema also engaged in community outreach programs, volunteering at free clinics and health fairs, which cultivated his early commitment to serving diverse populations and addressing health disparities.

Following his undergraduate success, Dr. Cheema pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, an institution renowned for its emphasis on clinical excellence and research innovation. During his four years of medical training, he excelled in both the pre‑clinical and clinical phases, earning accolades for his diagnostic acumen, bedside manner, and leadership in student‑led health initiatives. He completed core rotations in general surgery, orthopedics, and dermatology, experiences that solidified his fascination with the transformative potential of reconstructive and aesthetic procedures. His senior year was highlighted by a capstone research project that investigated the impact of peri‑operative nutrition on postoperative outcomes in cosmetic breast surgery, an investigation that later contributed to institutional guidelines on patient preparation.

After earning his MD, Dr. Cheema embarked on an intensive residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery, a demanding program that combined high‑volume operative exposure with a comprehensive curriculum in microsurgery, craniofacial reconstruction, and aesthetic refinements. His residency training was characterized by a relentless pursuit of technical mastery, as he logged thousands of cases ranging from complex flap reconstructions to nuanced facial lifts. He also completed a fellowship focusing on anesthesiology and pain management, a strategic decision that equipped him with a dual perspective on surgical execution and peri‑operative comfort. This unique combination of plastic surgery expertise and anesthetic proficiency positions Dr. Cheema as a surgeon who not only crafts beautiful results but also safeguards patient comfort throughout the entire surgical journey.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Cheema’s surgical repertoire is distinguished by a breadth of procedures that span both reconstructive and aesthetic domains, each performed with meticulous attention to detail and a deep respect for the patient’s anatomical integrity. In the realm of facial surgery, he has mastered rhinoplasty, facelifts, blepharoplasty, and chin augmentation, employing advanced techniques such as open rhinoplasty with preservation of the nasal dorsum, and deep plane facelifts that address both superficial and deep tissue laxity. His approach to facial rejuvenation integrates volumizing fillers, strategically placed sutures, and precise tissue repositioning to achieve harmonious, natural‑looking results that avoid the “over‑done” aesthetic often seen in less experienced hands. Moreover, Dr. Cheema’s reconstructive work includes complex craniofacial repairs for congenital anomalies, trauma‑related reconstructions, and scar revision procedures that restore both function and appearance.

Beyond the face, Dr. Cheema’s expertise extends to body contouring and breast surgery, where he applies a patient‑specific philosophy to procedures such as abdominoplasty, liposuction, breast augmentation, mastopexy, and autologous tissue reconstruction. His utilization of high‑definition liposuction techniques, combined with meticulous hemostasis and strategic fat grafting, yields sculpted contours while minimizing postoperative swelling and bruising. In breast reconstruction, Dr. Cheema leverages his anesthesiology background to optimize operative timing and postoperative pain control, employing muscle‑sparing flaps and microsurgical anastomoses that reduce donor‑site morbidity and accelerate recovery. His commitment to evidence‑based practice is evident in his adherence to protocols that prioritize tissue viability, scar minimization, and long‑term aesthetic stability.

Central to Dr. Cheema’s surgical philosophy is an integrated approach to pain management that begins before the incision and continues well into the recovery phase. His dual training in anesthesiology allows him to design multimodal analgesic regimens that incorporate regional nerve blocks, long‑acting local anesthetics, and non‑opioid systemic agents, thereby reducing reliance on narcotics and enhancing patient comfort. For example, in extensive body contouring cases, he frequently employs transversus abdominis plane (TAP) blocks and erector spinae plane (ESP) blocks to target specific dermatomal pain pathways, resulting in lower pain scores and faster ambulation. This emphasis on peri‑operative analgesia not only improves the immediate postoperative experience but also contributes to better long‑term outcomes by minimizing inflammation, preserving tissue integrity, and facilitating early return to normal activities.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety is the cornerstone of Dr. Cheema’s practice, a principle reinforced by his active involvement with leading professional organizations such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists. Through these affiliations, he stays at the forefront of evolving safety standards, participates in guideline development, and contributes to educational initiatives that promote best practices in peri‑operative care. His dedication to safety is further exemplified by his role as a mentor and educator, where he imparts the importance of rigorous pre‑operative assessment, meticulous intra‑operative monitoring, and comprehensive postoperative follow‑up to residents and fellows alike. By fostering a culture of vigilance and continuous improvement, Dr. Cheema ensures that every surgical encounter adheres to the highest levels of clinical excellence.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to patient safety and clinical excellence, Dr. Cheema was honored as the Physician of the Year by Saint Joseph Medical Center in 2022. This accolade reflects his unwavering commitment to delivering care that consistently exceeds institutional benchmarks for safety, patient satisfaction, and surgical outcomes. The award also highlights his leadership in implementing a suite of safety protocols, including a standardized surgical safety checklist, real‑time intra‑operative imaging, and a structured postoperative complication tracking system. These initiatives have demonstrably reduced adverse events, lowered infection rates, and shortened hospital stays, thereby reinforcing Dr. Cheema’s reputation as a surgeon who prioritizes the well‑being of his patients above all else.

Beyond institutional recognition, Dr. Cheema’s safety ethos permeates every facet of his practice through the integration of cutting‑edge technology and evidence‑based practice. He routinely utilizes advanced monitoring devices such as bispectral index (BIS) monitors for depth of anesthesia, and employs intra‑operative neuromuscular monitoring to prevent residual blockade. His operating suite is equipped with state‑of‑the‑art ventilation systems, antimicrobial laminar flow, and real‑time temperature regulation to maintain optimal surgical environments. In addition, he adheres to stringent infection control protocols, including pre‑operative skin antisepsis with chlorhexidine, prophylactic antibiotics tailored to procedure type, and meticulous wound closure techniques that minimize tension and promote rapid healing. Collectively, these measures underscore Dr. Cheema’s profound dedication to safeguarding his patients at every stage of their surgical journey.
