Dr. Anna Bakeman - Plastic Surgeon in Woodbury, MN

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Anna Bakeman earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the prestigious University of Minnesota Medical School, where she graduated summa cum laude, distinguishing herself through a combination of academic excellence and research innovation. During her medical school tenure, she pursued a dual focus in anatomy and surgical sciences, authoring peer‑reviewed publications on tissue regeneration and scar remodeling that garnered awards at national conferences. Her commitment to scientific rigor was further demonstrated by her active participation in the university’s Clinical Research Institute, where she contributed to multi‑center trials evaluating the efficacy of novel injectable fillers and the long‑term outcomes of breast reconstruction techniques. This foundation of scholarly inquiry equipped Dr. Bakeman with a deep understanding of both the microscopic mechanisms and macroscopic clinical implications that inform modern plastic surgery.

Following medical school, Dr. Bakeman completed a demanding General Surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, a program renowned for its exhaustive operative exposure and emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration. Over the course of five years, she mastered a broad spectrum of surgical procedures, ranging from complex abdominal reconstructions to intricate vascular repairs, honing a meticulous hand‑eye coordination and a decisive intra‑operative mindset. Her exemplary performance earned her the Resident of the Year award, reflecting her leadership in the operating suite, dedication to mentorship, and unwavering commitment to patient safety. The rigorous training environment at Mayo instilled in Dr. Bakeman a disciplined approach to peri‑operative care, risk assessment, and evidence‑based decision making.

To refine her expertise in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Bakeman pursued a dedicated Plastic Surgery fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she trained under world‑renowned pioneers in facial rejuvenation, breast aesthetics, and body contouring. During this fellowship, she performed over 500 microsurgical procedures, including free flap reconstructions and intricate facial nerve repairs, while also mastering the latest technologies such as radiofrequency‑assisted liposuction and three‑dimensional nipple‑areola reconstruction. Her fellowship culminated in a capstone research project on the long‑term psychosocial impact of breast augmentation, which was subsequently published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery. Upon completion, Dr. Bakeman earned board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, affirming her mastery of both the scientific and artistic dimensions of the specialty.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Bakeman’s surgical repertoire encompasses a comprehensive suite of aesthetic procedures, with a particular emphasis on breast augmentation, liposuction, and abdominoplasty (commonly referred to as the “tummy tuck”). In breast augmentation, she combines an artistic eye for proportion with a data‑driven understanding of implant selection, placement techniques, and tissue dynamics. Whether employing a submuscular, subglandular, or dual‑plane approach, Dr. Bakeman meticulously evaluates each patient’s chest wall anatomy, skin quality, and aesthetic goals to determine the optimal implant size, shape, and surface texture. Her proficiency with both silicone and saline implants, as well as her adeptness at using intra‑operative imaging to verify symmetry, has resulted in consistently natural‑looking outcomes that enhance confidence without compromising the integrity of the breast tissue.

Liposuction under Dr. Bakeman’s care is performed with state‑of‑the‑art technologies such as power‑assist devices, ultrasonic‑assisted liposuction, and laser‑enhanced fat removal, each selected to match the unique adipose characteristics of the treatment area. She emphasizes a conservative, sculptural approach, targeting stubborn fat deposits while preserving vital vascular and lymphatic structures to minimize postoperative edema and contour irregularities. Her meticulous technique includes strategic placement of incisions to conceal scars, thorough contour mapping, and the use of post‑operative compression garments to facilitate skin retraction. Patients consistently report a smoother silhouette, accelerated recovery times, and a heightened sense of body confidence following her procedures.

Abdominoplasty, a cornerstone of Dr. Bakeman’s body‑contouring expertise, is executed with a focus on achieving a harmonious, natural waistline that reflects each patient’s unique anatomy. She employs a refined, layered closure technique that addresses both the superficial fascia and deeper muscular layers, ensuring robust support for the abdominal wall and minimizing the risk of postoperative herniation. Dr. Bakeman also integrates adjunctive procedures such as umbilical repositioning, flank liposuction, and fat grafting to the hips or gluteal region when appropriate, creating a comprehensive transformation that extends beyond the midsection. Her commitment to meticulous hemostasis, tension‑free suturing, and strategic scar placement yields scars that are discreet and well‑concealed, while her postoperative care protocol—encompassing pain management, activity progression, and scar modulation therapies—optimizes healing and patient satisfaction.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Patient safety stands as the cornerstone of Dr. Bakeman’s practice, a principle reinforced by her active involvement with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). As a member of ASPS, she adheres to the organization’s rigorous standards for surgical excellence, continuous education, and ethical conduct. Dr. Bakeman regularly participates in ASPS‑sponsored workshops, webinars, and peer‑reviewed case conferences, ensuring that her techniques remain aligned with the latest evidence‑based guidelines. Moreover, she contributes to ASPS’s national safety initiatives, such as the “Patient Safety in Plastic Surgery” task force, by providing data on intra‑operative complications and postoperative outcomes, thereby helping shape industry‑wide protocols that protect patients across the United States.

In recognition of her unwavering dedication to safety and patient satisfaction, Dr. Bakeman was honored with the Patient Choice Award, a distinction bestowed upon clinicians who demonstrate exceptional patient-centered care, transparent communication, and superior clinical results.
