Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Freel’s academic journey began at Jesuit High School in New Orleans, where he distinguished himself not only as a top scholar but also as a leader in community service and athletics. The Jesuit tradition of “men for others” instilled in him a profound sense of duty to serve, a value that later translated into his compassionate approach to patient care. His rigorous high school curriculum, enriched by classical studies and advanced sciences, laid a solid foundation for the demanding pre‑medical coursework he would later pursue.

Following his graduation from Jesuit, Dr. Freel earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Psychology from Duke University, graduating magna cum laude. At Duke, he immersed himself in cutting‑edge research on cellular differentiation and tissue regeneration, publishing several peer‑reviewed articles that explored the molecular pathways governing scar formation. His undergraduate experience was marked by a synthesis of scientific inquiry and artistic appreciation, as he also participated in Duke’s Fine Arts program, studying anatomy through the lens of sculpture and visual arts. This unique interdisciplinary exposure sharpened his ability to visualize three‑dimensional structures—a skill that would become indispensable in his surgical career.

In 2003, Dr. Freel received his MD from LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine, where he excelled in both clinical rotations and research endeavors. During his medical school years, he completed a prestigious surgical internship at the Ochsner Medical Center, gaining exposure to a broad spectrum of operative procedures ranging from emergent trauma to elective reconstructive cases. His academic performance earned him the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine, and he was selected for the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. The combination of rigorous academic training, hands‑on surgical experience, and a commitment to scholarly inquiry equipped Dr. Freel with the clinical acumen and intellectual curiosity that continue to drive his practice today.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Freel’s surgical repertoire encompasses a wide array of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, each performed with meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering focus on patient safety. In cosmetic surgery, he is renowned for his mastery of facial rejuvenation techniques, including facelifts, rhinoplasties, and eyelid surgeries that blend natural aesthetics with individualized facial harmony. His approach to aesthetic facial procedures emphasizes subtlety, employing advanced technologies such as 3‑D imaging and ultrasonography to map facial musculature and fat distribution, thereby achieving results that are both youthful and authentic.

Beyond facial aesthetics, Dr. Freel has built a distinguished practice in reconstructive surgery, handling complex cases that involve trauma, congenital anomalies, and oncologic reconstruction. He has performed hundreds of microsurgical free‑flap transfers, restoring form and function to patients who have suffered severe tissue loss due to accidents or cancer resections. His expertise in reconstructive microsurgery is complemented by a deep understanding of wound healing dynamics, allowing him to minimize complications and accelerate postoperative recovery. Dr. Freel’s dedication to reconstructive excellence has made him a sought‑after consultant for multidisciplinary teams handling high‑risk patients across the Gulf Coast region.

Specializing in breast surgery, Dr. Freel offers a comprehensive suite of procedures ranging from augmentation and lift to mastopexy and post‑mastectomy reconstruction. He employs state‑of‑the‑art techniques such as pre‑pectoral implant placement, acellular dermal matrix support, and autologous fat grafting, ensuring that each patient achieves optimal aesthetic outcomes while preserving nipple‑areolar complex sensation and minimizing postoperative discomfort. His nuanced understanding of breast anatomy, coupled with an artist’s eye for proportion, enables him to create results that are both symmetrical and naturally beautiful. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Freel contributes to the academic literature on breast reconstruction, presenting innovative approaches at national conferences and publishing guidelines that influence practice standards worldwide.

As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the Louisiana Society of Plastic Surgeons, he adheres to stringent ethical standards and participates in continuing education programs that emphasize evidence‑based protocols, infection control, and perioperative risk mitigation. His affiliation with the American College of Surgeons further underscores his commitment to the universal standards of surgical safety, including the adoption of the Surgical Safety Checklist and ongoing performance improvement initiatives.

Dr. Freel’s dedication to safety and excellence has been publicly recognized through numerous awards and accolades. In 2020, he received the Best Cosmetic Surgeon Award from the Louisiana Medical Awards, a distinction that honors physicians who demonstrate superior skill, innovative technique, and a consistent record of positive patient outcomes. These honors reflect not only his technical prowess but also his relentless pursuit of the highest standards of care for every individual who walks through his doors.

Beyond formal recognitions, Dr. Freel has instituted a comprehensive patient safety program within his practice that integrates pre‑operative risk stratification, intra‑operative monitoring, and post‑operative follow‑up protocols. He employs advanced anesthesia techniques, utilizes intra‑operative fluorescence imaging to assess tissue perfusion in real time, and maintains a zero‑tolerance policy for infection control breaches. His practice also offers a dedicated patient liaison team that ensures clear communication, timely response to concerns, and seamless coordination with primary care providers. This systematic approach to safety has resulted in complication rates that consistently fall below national averages, reinforcing Dr. Freel’s reputation as a surgeon who places patient well‑being above all else.
