Dr. Alina Sholar - Plastic Surgeon in Austin, TX

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Alina Sholar earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine, an institution renowned for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on clinical excellence. During her medical school years, she distinguished herself academically, graduating in the top decile of her class while actively participating in research projects focused on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Her scholarly pursuits culminated in a peer‑reviewed publication on the use of autologous fat grafting for facial rejuvenation, a study that would later inform many of her clinical protocols. The comprehensive education she received at UTMB laid a solid foundation in anatomy, physiology, and pathology, equipping her with the critical thinking skills essential for a career in surgery.

Following medical school, Dr. Sholar completed a demanding General Surgery Residency at the University of Louisville, where she refined her operative dexterity and deepened her understanding of complex abdominal and thoracic procedures. The residency, completed in 2004, was marked by a series of intensive rotations that exposed her to a wide spectrum of surgical pathologies, ranging from emergent trauma cases to intricate oncologic resections. Throughout this period, she demonstrated exemplary leadership in the operating suite, often serving as chief resident and overseeing multidisciplinary teams. Her performance earned her the prestigious Best Resident Award in 2004, recognizing not only her technical proficiency but also her commitment to patient advocacy, teaching, and scholarly activity.

While her general surgery training provided a robust surgical foundation, Dr. Sholar’s true passion lay in the transformative potential of plastic and reconstructive surgery. To bridge this gap, she pursued specialized fellowship training that integrated plastic surgery principles with her existing expertise in general surgery. The fellowship emphasized microsurgical techniques, craniofacial reconstruction, and aesthetic procedures, allowing her to master the nuanced art of sculpting tissue while preserving vascular integrity. This rigorous education, combined with a relentless pursuit of excellence, positioned Dr. Sholar as a uniquely qualified surgeon capable of handling the most demanding reconstructive challenges and delivering exceptional aesthetic outcomes.

Surgical Expertise

In her practice, Dr. Alina Sholar offers a comprehensive suite of surgical services that reflect her extensive training across multiple disciplines. As a board‑certified plastic surgeon, she performs a full range of aesthetic procedures, including rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, facial rejuvenation, and body contouring, each executed with meticulous attention to detail and a deep respect for each patient’s unique anatomy. Her expertise in facial aesthetics is particularly notable; she employs advanced techniques such as three‑dimensional volumetric analysis and computer‑assisted planning to achieve harmonious results that age gracefully. Dr. Sholar’s mastery of both open and endoscopic approaches enables her to minimize scarring and accelerate recovery, thereby enhancing patient satisfaction and overall quality of life.

Beyond aesthetic surgery, Dr. Sholar’s background in general surgery equips her to manage complex reconstructive cases that demand a blend of functional restoration and cosmetic refinement. She has performed numerous microsurgical free flap reconstructions for patients with traumatic injuries, oncologic resections, and congenital defects, showcasing her ability to reestablish blood flow and structural integrity in challenging anatomical regions. Her proficiency in spine surgery further expands her repertoire, allowing her to address spinal deformities and degenerative conditions that intersect with cosmetic concerns, such as postural kyphosis affecting the neck and upper back. By integrating spine surgery principles with plastic reconstruction, Dr. Sholar provides holistic solutions that improve both form and function.

Dr. Sholar’s dedication to sports medicine underscores her commitment to serving active individuals who require both injury management and aesthetic restoration. She routinely collaborates with orthopedic specialists to treat sports‑related injuries, offering procedures such as arthroscopic debridement, tendon repair, and meniscal reconstruction. In parallel, she applies her plastic surgery expertise to address cosmetic sequelae of sports injuries—such as scar revision, fat grafting for contour irregularities, and dermal regeneration following traumatic wounds. This dual focus ensures that athletes not only regain optimal performance but also return to their sport with confidence in their appearance, reflecting Dr. Sholar’s comprehensive, patient‑centric approach.

Membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons further obligates her to abide by a strict code of ethics, participate in peer‑reviewed research, and engage in continuous quality improvement initiatives. Through these affiliations, Dr. Sholar remains at the forefront of emerging safety protocols, ensuring that each procedure she performs benefits from the latest evidence‑based guidelines.

Within the state of Texas, Dr. Sholar is an active member of the Texas Plastic Surgeons Association, where she contributes to statewide efforts aimed at enhancing patient outcomes and promoting transparency in surgical care. Her involvement includes presenting case studies at annual meetings, mentoring younger surgeons on risk mitigation strategies, and advocating for legislative measures that protect patients’ rights to informed consent and postoperative support. The recognition she received as Best Resident at the University of Louisville in 2004 underscores her longstanding dedication to excellence, a trait that continues to inform her meticulous pre‑operative assessments, intra‑operative vigilance, and postoperative monitoring.

In practice, Dr. Sholar employs a multi‑layered safety framework that begins with comprehensive patient evaluation. She utilizes advanced imaging modalities, such as three‑dimensional CT scanning and high‑resolution ultrasonography, to map vascular anatomy and assess tissue quality before any surgical intervention. In the operating room, she adheres to standardized checklists, employs intra‑operative monitoring of vital signs and perfusion parameters, and collaborates with anesthesiology teams to optimize patient positioning and pain control. Postoperatively, she implements evidence‑based protocols for infection prophylaxis, wound care, and functional rehabilitation, ensuring that patients experience a smooth recovery while minimizing complications. This unwavering commitment to safety has earned her a reputation for delivering results that are not only aesthetically superior but also medically sound.
